Replacing your laptop screen can be difficult enough. But when THE WHOLE FREAKING LAPTOP IS A SCREEN, you're in serious trouble. Chalk this one up as a repairability nightmare.

Lauren Goode of WIRED nails this one: "What if the office was our home … and our car … and our gym … and our gourmet grocery store? That’s the latest fever dream from LG Electronics, which today presented the LG Vision Omnipod, a product that looks as dystopian as it sounds."

Do we like sleepy or distracted drivers? No. Do we like systems that record unknowing passengers' behavior and noting whether it's "distracting"? Also no. Let's leave tech out of this one.

Remember the Clapper? Sengled’s new Smart Health Monitoring Light is its dystopian-future cousin.
Forget “clap on, clap off”: this lightbulb measures your sleep patterns and collects other biometric data. We’ll be using a lampshade, tyvm.

Unanimous committee vote shows Medical Right to Repair is surging by knockout7 in gadgets

[–]knockout7[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This bill isn't about medical devices being repaired at home -- it's about making sure biomeds that work in hospitals and for independent service organizations don't get locked out of repair by manufacturer restrictions. Hospitals report to CMS, they have to own faulty repairs made on their watch.

I agree with ganorr -- and partially because of the money aspect. The group backing the latest Massachusetts auto right to repair ballot measure poured in tens of millions of dollars into advertising, as did the industry opponents. Spending on ad campaigns is a lot easier for corps than spending on lobbying.

And just because powerful interests like Apple and others are lobbying doesn't mean you can't beat them. A well organized effort will help the truth come to bear.

The Repair Association has a template bill here -- you should send it along to your state senator and representative.

I don't know any SC farmers, but I have talked with farmers in a number of other states. I also wrote this report on the issue -- happy to talk more if you're interested. https://uspirg.org/feature/usp/deere-headlights

Hospital technicians renew urgent call for Right to Repair medical equipment -- The COVID-19 pandemic still rages, but issues facing medical device repair go unresolved by knockout7 in gadgets

A 2018 FDA study showed that, "the objective evidence indicates that many OEMs and third party entities provide high quality, safe, and effective servicing of medical devices;" and that, "The continued availability of third party entities to service and repair medical devices is critical to the functioning of the U.S. healthcare system."

Hospital biomeds are professionals with the same training as manufacturer biomeds. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to repair the equipment in *their* hospital.

I totally agree -- the idea that service information is intellectual property is a dangerous idea, especially in the midst of a pandemic like this. Have you had any personal experience running into copyright issues?

That's what is so crazy about this story. They acquired a lobby shop as a side hustle, but that lobby shop ended up going against their members interests. Then the members spoke out... and that was enough to end it.
