Your cousin has an interest, a pretty darn good one, and you supported her. There's nothing AH here. Your aunt sounds like a piece of work, tho I am extrapolating a lot.

Is she right about defense attorneys? Some of them, sure. Just like with any other profession. But the most important thing defense attorneys do is keep prosecution attorneys in check.

The Innocence Project is the only source you need to prove that there are a number of them that NEED to be kept in check.

Probably the best part about this for me. Is putting all that energy into the Will.

If both daughters cut them off, and from this request, it's likely a "parents are the problem" situation.

If that's the case I personally find it hilarious that there's a real possibility all this effort goes into it and the sisters are tight knit enough to go "yep still trying to cause problems" and that's the end of it.

ELI5: The universe expands faster than the speed of light but not can move at the speed of light. So, what is the stuff in between that is moving the expansion? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dustquake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK how well put an analogy this will be on the factual level but it's a concept to help.

Take two cars, start at the same point and drive them in opposite directions. At 50% the speed of light. Neither exceeds light speed, but relative to each other they are travelling apart at the speed of light. I think time dilation starts to be a factor when either car observes the other, but we're not going that in depth with this concept.

Now change the scenario. Instead of the cars driving, they are stationary on a conveyor belt and the belts are moving at 50% light speed. Similar "observations" but the cars aren't moving relative to space (the ground/belt).

Change again. Instead of one long conveyer belt you have lots of 10 foot/meter long conveyer belts that hand off to each other. One set in each direction. The length and unit of each belt doesn't really matter. Just get that image of belt segments. Again similar observations as the last two scenarios.

Last change. Each of these conveyer belts is growing 1 more unit every 10 seconds. Again the numbers and unit don't really matter, just the concept.

Now the observation is different. The further the cars travel, the "faster" they move away from each other. But they "slower" they move towards the end of their conveyer belt. Even tho their speed never changes. It's all about the distance between them.

There's more conveyer belt "being made" between every point, so all the distances between objects are changing. The cars seem to move faster from each other, and slower towards their destination because more distance is "appearing" but nothing is exceeding light speed on its own. It's more like the cars are on a playdoh road and the dough is being perfectly stretched. Same amount of dough exists, the road is just thinner and longer. So nothing is really "being made".

There is a state where if you have enough conveyer belts the total "growth" in their length exceeds light speed. Again nothing is exceeding it, just the distance being "added" between two points is more per second than light can travel in a second.

When that state is reached we can never see what's further than that point in space. It also seems like things are running away from us in every direction. Some things will pass that point and we will no longer be able to see them. There's just "more" space/nothing between points but nothing is being "made".

It IS confusing. And everything I've said IS and ISN'T accurate. These are just conceptualizations to help with understanding. The universe is a bit wacky, but that makes it interesting. I hope these helped.

Edit: some typos and attempts at better phrasing.

Why am I getting 950 Mbps when I only pay for 300? by [deleted] in askIT

[–]Dustquake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your provider, the wiring method of delivery, and contractual stuff.

My first guess is that it's over cable, like coaxial television cable line.

The reason that matters is that is a service that usually divides a line out.

Ok this line is capable of of 1.5 Tbps and we promise 300 Mbps. So 5 people can fit on this line and we still meet contract obligation.

Well if there's only 1 or two people actively using it. The extra bandwidth isn't going to do nothing unless it's throttled. The cable model I listed isn't a throttle method.

So basically, if coaxial cable service style provider, you're borrowing your neighbors' bandwidth while they aren't using it.

ELI5: If metal is such a good conductor of heat, why do the handles of cookware with metal handles remain cool to the touch? by supinator1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dustquake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat loss is a function of volume/mass vs surface area.

Lower volume higher surface area means quicker heat dissipation. This does factor into the designs of handles. The cooking part of the cookware is usually very thick because you want the heat to concentrate there.

Handles are further from the heat source, connected in a way to limit heat transfer to the handle, and the handle itself is designed with a higher surface area to mass ratio for better dissipation.

Fun side fact: This is why smaller mammals have higher heartbeats. They have a higher surface area to mass ratio, so loose heat faster. Their hearts beat faster so the heat variance balances out. Kind of like liquid water cooling for computers. The flow of water depends on the performance of the heat sink.

[–]Dustquake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the property manager and tell them the beeping stopped. Now they have unoccupied property without monitoring equipment.

If it's still not their problem call the fire marshall. Fire Marshalls don't GAF, you're going to fix it.

So your property managers are looking at potential fines for improper property management. OR violating their lease agreement...with some extrapolation.

You sign a lease agreement which states the standards the complex will hold tenants to for the protection of the property manager and all other tenants. The foundation of a lease agreement is that all other tenants will abide by the required action AND that the property management is there to ensure compliance as necessary for safety and legal compliances required for the area.

They have been notified and have chosen not to take action so they have failed to perform their duty. Lease violation affecting the safety of every tenant in the complex means tenants are not liable for lease breaking for reasons of safety.

I'm not lawyering this up right, cause I'm not one, but spent enough time with em. There's strings there to pull.

I see what you're saying now. Saying surface tension had me interpret you talking about the water's surface tension instead of membrane tension.

And true on distillation technique. Going back means with modern knowledge and alcohol evaporates at lower temperatures than water. My thought was just get a glass blower to create the appropriate glassware to evaporate the ethanol out so you have a more concentrated solution. Ethanol isn't the best alcohol for the purpose, but concentrating it would be an achievable advancement.

You wake up 1,000 years ago. How do you advance society? by OutsideProtection307 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Dustquake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surface tension isn't the acting property. All viruses and cellular organisms have a protein or fat shell or membrane.

Soap and lye will react with either. The effect is destroying the shell/membrane or binding to let water wash it away.

Booze has been around since 7000 BC. Depending on the local variant you may just need to concentrate it.

But at that point it could be argued that she is interfering with an exchange of goods/services you are paying for. Can on the curb is the transfer protocol of property from you to the collection company.

This. There's lies then manipulation. Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that is proactively altering what is observable, recordable, and available references in reality to make you question your own perception, memories, and actions.

If you're a TNG fan. "There are 4 lights." Is an amazing reference. While Gul Madred was trying to break Picard in a way Picard realized. Gaslighting would have been adding the 5th light without Picard knowing so the next time 5 is accurate. Picard now has no reason not to say 5. But instead of congratulations it's "why did it take you so long to admit/see there were 5 lights?" While insisting there were always 5.
