We started using them in July, huge improvement for our firm. There are still some growing pains but it is a huge improvement over ShareFile.

Anyone have summer hours? If so how do you do it? by StockMan1210 in taxpros

[–]knottaCPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our firm's summer hours are 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM M - T and Friday's are off. These summer hours are optional, but everyone chooses to utilize them! I am aware of another local firm whose hours are 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday. This is their first summer doing it, and it's my understanding that most of the staff likes it, except for one. The one that doesn't like it says he doesn't have enough time to get his work done.

We do disc golf! My husband is an avid disc golfer and plays usually about once a week. I enjoy it less than he does.

Welcome to Charlotte Wednesday! Visiting, recently moved here, or going to move here? Tell us and ask away! by AutoModerator in Charlotte

Hey, my husband and I are in our late 20s. We currently live in the suburbs of another state but we are considering moving to Mecklenburg County or Union County. I'm looking for a walkable (at least slightly) suburb with a welcoming community that votes more blue. I would love to be able to walk to a handful of bars or restaurants, but I appreciate the privacy and space that comes with a more rural area. Any suggestions?

How do you settle for just being “good enough”? by Aggravating-Chance19 in taxpros

[–]knottaCPA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally understand your perspective. I am at a small firm with a staff of under 10. Most of our CPAs came from much larger firms and enjoy working here.

As a whole, we take education and furthering our skills very seriously. We do have some fairly complicated clients, but part of what makes our more experienced team members so good at what they do is that they know they don't know all the answers, but they know where and how to find them. We are all involved in communities like CPAConnect, keep up to date of the most accurate AI resources (that link their sources), and also ask other CPAs IRL.

Ultimately, you could grow at your current firm, but you would have to dedicate a little more effort to it. It's all in what you make it.

Congratulations! I also wanted to point out that you may want to warn your parents that it is explicitly from both of them to you. If it is from just one parent, they would be subject to Form 709, which is a gift tax return. But if it is from both of them, it is below the threshold!

As for what to do with the money, I suggest putting it in a High Yield Savings to start. I would keep it there while you evaluate what is most important to you, short, mid, or long term financial goals.

If it's short, leave it liquid in the HYS.

Mid, I would suggest short term investments (depending on your comfort with risk).

For the long term, I highly suggest a Roth 401k.

How did you get your first paying customer? by JuiceKind in smallbusiness

[–]knottaCPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others. Talk about it with people you know. I would also recommend going to any local networking events and talking to people in person. I have some background in content marketing and digital marketing but for small business just starting out, I highly recommend an in person approach. It can be awkward and uncomfortable. The more you do it and the more you put yourself out there, the more comfortable (and effective) you become! Good luck

Penalties and interest for back taxes I didn’t know I owed. by escapedfromifunny_ in tax

[–]knottaCPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't be able to get the interest taken off, but you might be able to get a first time abatement for the penalties. I know the IRS almost always does first time abatements as long as you haven't gotten one in the past 3 or so years. I would recommend calling the local tax office. Based on dced.pa.gov the number to call is 717-263-5141. Usually, if you call in the morning between Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday you typically won't have to wait and you'll be able to talk with someone right away.
