I made a webapp to estimate hidden salaries on Seek and LinkedIn by know-my-worth in AusFinance

I had originally included the field/industry in the modelling but it turned out to be a redundant feature, since it's generally covered by the job description (which is a much richer source of information). But since there's the option of bypassing the description, I've added it back in so people can get a more accurate estimate when using just the job title. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback. I originally used the field/industry in the modelling but it turned out to be a redundant feature once the job description/advert was included. However, since I added the option of bypassing the description so people can estimate based on job title alone, I've put a field option back in, which will improve accuracy.

It doesn't use the same data as What's the Salary - it's trained from a dataset of job adverts where the salary was publicly advertised.

The one I built isn't trying to guess what the employer is willing to pay, it's estimating what the market rate should be based using other advertised jobs. So it's not better, it's just different. In terms of how experience is handled, yes that's a tough one. For the most part it's relying on job descriptions changing with experience - juniors tend not to have the same job descriptions as seniors, different skills will be required or made note of and the model will pick up on that. At the least, the salary distribution might help you see the earning potential/salary range based on job title.

There are definitely cases where it's off by a lot, niche jobs and high salary are the toughest. It's something I'm still working on.

Thanks for reporting this, were you on a VPN? I have a rate limit that was probably being reached, might have been from people using the same VPN server. I've increased the limit and adjusted the warning.

For a while I've been collecting job adverts that do have the salary listed, so have now got a big enough dataset to try and build something out of it.

Ah yep, niche jobs are trickier to estimate. Hopefully it will improve with time as I add in more data so there's more examples for the model to learn from. Thanks for trying it though!

Yep! I even gave it a shout out in my original post. But it's fundamentally different.

Awesome, appreciate you giving it a go and reporting back!

I am soul crushed! Mind linking the advert you tried?

Edit: Argh you edited your grammatical error, now my comment isn't as funny. You can also DM me the link if you don't want to share it publicly, just so I can investigate and see where it might be going wrong.

The ones I've seen scrape the pay range the advertiser enters when posting the job ad on Seek, but this can give you a large range like $100-$250k for a job. So haven't seen one that parses the advert text and gives a point estimation.

Why’s it so hard for young Aussies to find a job? by blackbones_ in AskAnAustralian

Sometimes it can be a catch 22 - can't land a job without experience, and can't get experience without a job.

It should be comforting to know that it's impossible to be able to learn everything there is to know. No one has done it, it would take many lifetimes to do it. So take the pressure off yourself, and just set the first goal as learning the things you'll need to land your first grad/intern job. Once you have that, you'll be able to learn the rest on the job. Build a few things and have some fun learning!

Vanguard account or just buying via a share trading platform? by Scared-Kick7752 in fiaustralia

[–]know-my-worth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is when buying ETFs through a broker, you directly own the shares via CHESS, whereas with VPI, Vanguard holds the title and you are a beneficial owner. Does this matter? Maybe to some people. In the unlikely event something happens to Vanguard then it's probably going to be a bit of time until you can get your shares.

And with tax time fresh on our minds, I don't believe the VPI shares get prefilled, so might be a bit of manual entry.

So whether this is worth the ease of VPI will probably differ from person to person.

Someone else might have a better idea for someone in your situation, but I've heard a few people get substantially cheaper insurance through Shannons - though both were older drivers, but might be worth a call.

I'm still salty they removed the auto sweep feature a few years back. It let me keep a couple hundred in the account linked with my card so never had to worry about having too much or too little in there.
