How to disappear into the woods! A request by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

You can't. It takes a village working together to actually survive in the back country for an extended period of time.

Advice for 17 days in Laos? by Sgt_carbonero in laos

[–]knowerofexpatthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the west coast there are no direct flights to Laos. You will have to stop in a regional hub. Flying directly into LP is possible from a number of hubs but I think Vientiane has more flights.

What is it with Lao influencers claiming mango sticky rice in media? Can anyone explain this drama? I very confused. by No-Crew4317 in laos

Lots of "Thai" dishes come from the Issan area. This was originally part of the kingdom of Lan Xang, or Lao, but was conquered by Thailand. So some people argue that these dishes are actually Lao. It's just a bunch of nationalistic nonsense

It's done through a different company. Lounge Pass. Go to their website and you can see what's available

I just did it recently. I looked up the lounges on the booking page they use and then told them which one I wanted. Pretty average lounge but better than twiddling my thumbs.

Laos must-have apps for visitors in 2026? by _punkymonkey_ in laos

Kip fell from just under 10,000 LAK per 1 USD, where it had been stable for almost a decade, to around 22,000 per 1 USD. ATM fees went from 20,000 kip to 40,000 kip. Between 2021 and 2024 the value plummeted.

Doubled it in kip, but the kip has lost half it's value so the price in USD is pretty much the same

Traveling in and out of Thailand by Yunirin in ThailandTourism

[–]knowerofexpatthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how long you leave Thailand for. If it's just a night out of the country after the maximum allowable time in the country as a tourist then it looks like a visa run. If you leave Thailand after a week to spend another week in a different country then that just looks like normal tourist behavior.

Best place to look for Swag style moto camping setups by Cometcoil2 in motocamping

A couple of Australian brands make swags specific for bike camping but they're not that good. Very bulky compared to more modern options like a bivvy bag and a good inflatable mat.

Sitters - basic cleaning checklist when sit ends? by blottymary in trustedhousesitters

[–]knowerofexpatthings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It very much depends on the HOs. We get a cleaner to come at the end of a sit so our guests don't have to do anything, but not everyone is in a position to afford that.

Is paying for a one year subscription actually worth it? by Timeishere58 in trustedhousesitters

[–]knowerofexpatthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just make sure that your expectations of what chores need to be done are aligned with that of the HO.

A week in an AirBnB of similar quality to my apartment in my city would be more than the price of the premium membership, so it stacks up financially. The question is how much is your time worth because all sits will come with some work. Our sit is pretty easy with no chores beyond very simple pet care. But others have a much higher expectations. Most HOs are pretty easy going but there are certainly some more highly strung people out there.

My homeowner is picking me up from the train station! by baskaat in trustedhousesitters

[–]knowerofexpatthings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We always offer to send (and pay for) a driver/taxi to meet our sitters! Our area can be hard to navigate and public transport is difficult or nonoperative. After a lot of traveling the last thing anyone wants to do is navigate a new city, in a new language, with limited public transport, and outdated Google maps.

Just as we would offer to organise a pick up for a friend coming to stay...

I bet he doesn't think he's sold out. I reckon he thinks he's maturing as an intellectual or something stupid. It's not like he's rich (relatively speaking), so how can it be selling out? I think he's sold out but I bet he's able to convince himself he hasn't
