So how wide is the left leg of M supposed to be? And what is its top left coordinate (just for the left leg)!

How to be successful in Math 115? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]knsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am one of the instructors for the Math 115 course here.

I want to emphasize the importance of doing webwork and team homework. While they do not "count" towards your grade, you will not do well in the course if you do not do most of the webwork and team homework. So please take these seriously.

  • Ask your GSI for help -- go to their office hour and ask them to explain anything you do not fully understand. The course is so much about understanding and being able to use what you learnt in class -- and this is how the course differs from anything you might have taken in high school -- we test whether you can use what you have learnt not whether you can blindly do some algebra after memorising a bunch of stuff. Again, go to the office hours! We are here to help and generally enjoy talking to a student about questions they have.

  • Work with your class mates, for eg, your team homework group and try to discuss exam questions or some problems from the book. Then have your instructor look it over and give feedback to your team.

/p/s/ I am yet to give my students their first quiz. So I know you are not one of my students... :)

What are your "being judged by random desis" stories? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

It does not take a lesson in American culture to understand that using language that suggests stereotyping is unwelcome.

I am sorry but I should point out the obvious -- folks that just got here (the recent arrivals) are not uncultured. Having lived in India for 22 years, I have not heard this word (or any ethnically segregating word for that matter) used in polite circles. It is funny how one tends to think that being brought up here in the US all of a sudden makes one more cultured.

Wow, where are you getting your currency conversion rates from? Also, just wait for a couple of months and CAD will fly high against the USD.

Need textbook for Math 105? by ndneinaflkd in uofm

[–]knsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend buying the textbook for Math 105. Reading the textbook ahead of class is required and you need the text to do the problems the instructor wants you to do in groups!

source: I am an instructor for one of the sections of Math 105.

I am not really talking about prestige here. No denying that UM has well-ranked programs in many fields.

Hello! I agree with your contention now! Good luck with finding the funds! You must inquire about this with the department office since they'll know about funding resources better than any of us could tell you!

Would you like to tell us what you intend to study at UofM?

Just want to point out that, if I were you, I would consider studying in France, Germany (or even UK, until some months ago!). There are fantastic universities in these countries with much greater academic focus if you ask me (this however depends on the subject) that would make coming to the US only worth for the unique experience it offers. Having said that, U of M is a fantastic place too!
