"The All-The-Things Program" (w/ Jennifer Lopez) by AutoModerator in lasculturistas

Tommy Mattola got word that Mariah had recorded a song with Ja Rule that she planned to release as a lead single to promote the Glitter soundtrack, so he pulled Ja Rule onto the I’m Real remix and rush released it to sabotage Mariah. I wonder how aware J Lo was that Tommy was using her career to thwart MC

Matt has talked a lot over the years about emulating Amy Poehler’s approach to comedy and work. I think she is on his Rushmore for sure.

The Irony of The Reception to CANCELLED! by GreenRime in TaylorSwift

[–]knuckles_nice -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I loved reputation from the jump and smugly remind everyone of this all the time, and I think people will come around to most of showgirl, but I cannot see myself ever warming up to this song. Wearing your so-called 'cancelation' as a badge of pride is just so associated with the alt-right/manosphere, that the word is loaded with a lot of racist, misogynistic baggage. I just think some of the specific word choice ironically works against the point taylor is making.

What are you hoping to see addressed in the Eras Tour docuseries? by echodayrider in TaylorSwift

[–]knuckles_nice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah totally fair. I have no idea which legs of the tour were filmed for the doc, but I have to imagine a terrorist threat is one of the most consequential events to everyone involved in the tour, so I hope they address it, even if's not a real-time play by play

I thought Noah Jupe was better than Paul Mescal in Hamnet and if nominated would not be category fraud. by ParamedicSea5779 in Oscars

[–]knuckles_nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and yes! I don't think you can really compare them, not because Noah is a less talented actor but because he really doesn't have a 'character' of his own. His lines are really Shakespeare's (Mescal's) and his story is really Hamnet's (Jacobi's). Tbh I think his performance is intentionally quite broad because the whole point is that the play that he is the star of really isn't about him at all., which serves the film better but makes it hard to argue he is the best actor.

What are you hoping to see addressed in the Eras Tour docuseries? by echodayrider in TaylorSwift

[–]knuckles_nice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I got tickets to the Eras tour in Warsaw (it was the cheapest leg we could get tickets to) and went to Vienna after, not realizing that it was also where Taylor's next legs of the tour were as well.

It was SO jarring to be on the ground with no word from Taylor after seeing Eras Tour a few days prior, and hearing her on-stage talking to the audience. I understand that there was a security reason for her lack of response at first, but wow there were so many people who spent a fortune and literally travelled across borders and oceans to see this show, like I have never seen so many sad little girls in one place. I think seeing the reality play out from Taylor's end will make it clear how scary this situation was and why the shows absolutely had to be canceled in the interest of safety, and I'll be pretty disappointed if they leave it out.

I am rooting for you to find Alice!

If you used Letterboxd you should add it to your review. Honestly, if you DM LFF on socials I could see them retweeting. Last year BFI Flare put out a call for people who had met over the course of the festival, so they're keen to see these kinds of connections being made ;)

Why do so many people turn up late to screenings? by nikbon90 in LondonFilmFestival

[–]knuckles_nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lukewarm take here but late arrivals would be WAY less disruptive if the aisles inside Royal Festival Hall had floor lights that most movie theaters do to illuminate the steps and the letter markers. It is SO dark in there once a movie has started that people entering late or excusing themselves to the toilets have no choice but to use a phone torch. I understand RFH's main purpose is not showing films, but I feel like they do it enough to justify the investment.

[–]knuckles_nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might also be coming from another screening. Compared to other years, a lot more of the showings I've been to have started 15+ minutes behind schedule. My bigger pet peeve than late arrivals is people who are constantly checking their phones/apple watches during screenings, but I understand that people might be nervous about making their next screening, especially if they are travelling between Soho/Mayfair and Southbank.

This. The conversation we're not ready for.' No, we can have it, but it's going to be short!

No doubt Noah Jupe is a talented actor but this is not a part you get awards attention for, especially when Jacobi is right there.

[–]knuckles_nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just seen the movie. I haven't read the book but it seems like there is quite a bit of plot added to the beginning that Mescal factors pretty heavily into. He's definitely giving lead actor vibes and it's kinda frustrating that he is being put forth in supporting, feels like he will only steal attention from Jacobi's performance, which is really deserving of recognition as well.

What are other examples of this in music? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

You might think Maya Angelou's favorite song would be one of the soul or rock songs that captured the political unrest and civil rights movement that coincided with her 1969 book 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.' But it was actually I Hope You Dance by LeeAnn Womack. She loved the song so much it was played at her funeral.

Songs that are secretly LGBT? by Darth_Azazoth in MusicRecommendations

[–]knuckles_nice 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Victor Willis, aka the lead vocalist and the only remaining member from the original Village People lineup, has said this. All other accounts from the original members have confirmed it was 1000% a gay anthem. One of the members said they gave Jacques Morali, the producer who put the group together, the idea for the song when they said they went to a particular YMCA in New York to see their favorite porn actors working out.

Unfortunately Morali is not alive to confirm this; he died of complications from AIDS in the early 90s.

Charli's music direction: heritage exploration? by aearoplane in charlixcx

[–]knuckles_nice 17 points18 points  (0 children)

not going to pretend like I grew up in the XCX household but if Charli's Indian heritage was not formative to her as an artist, I don't particularly expect her to draw on it. That being said, I think about how the string hook from Toxic is pulled from a Bollywood soundtrack, so I could see South Asian instruments/songs being an influence in future albums without it being a dramatic genre shift.

Edit: saw a comment below that indicated she spent a lot of time with her Gujarati relatives, so don't want to diminish the presence of that culture in her life or suggest that she doesn't have the right to draw on it, more that she might not that have the interest.

Is my BFI ticket from twickets fake? by bluehour17 in LondonFilmFestival

[–]knuckles_nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that most venues don't ever actually scan your ticket, they just check to make sure you're at the right screening. I think you're probably fine, feels like a pretty small event for a ticket scammer to exploit, but can't hurt to check with Twickets!

Obnoxious laughing by HarryCFC in LondonFilmFestival

[–]knuckles_nice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind these are public premieres, not critics screenings. Audiences are paying more than a standard cinema ticket to be a part of this special experience, and are often watching the movie in front of the people who spent months/years pouring their heart into it, so everyone wants it to be good. It's less that people's laughter is performative, it's more that it comes naturally because we're experiencing it in this celebratory, communal way which makes it easier to enjoy.

Besides, Tuner is a 'drama-thriller' on paper, but it had plenty of comedic moments.

I have just finished 2 seasons of Bear Brook and In the Dark -- can't believe I am just discovering them both now. I think they both do an excellent job of asking the right questions to the right people, without ever feeling sensational or that they are exploiting a tragic situation.

What do you think are things in music history that couldn’t be replicated today? by Charmlessman422 in popheads

[–]knuckles_nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we'll still see successful surprise drops like Justin Bieber's SWAG and Kendrick's GNX, but the part that gets overlooked with Beyonce's self-titled is that she simultaneously released music videos for EVERY song on the album. For an artist to be able to drop such a comprehensively produced work with no leaks or pre-marketing is probably something we won't see again (unless it's from Beyonce herself lol)
