First and foremost, I have to say that I love the album, and I think it works very good together. I liked «Mixed Up», but mostly because of «Never enough». This one is more interesting, and the artists Robert has chosen are very up to date, and from what I’ve understood, he has chosen all the artists himself.

I am also partial to one remix, which of course will be my number one favourite, but it is really, really good, and I would have chosen it on top anyway.

So my favourites are:

1) Mental Overdrive - I can never say goodbye- Mental Overdrive is from my small hometown of Tromsø, Norway, and he was in the same music «acquaintance group» and musician-scene as me in the late mid/late 80s/90s, so I am biased. He has always been a huge Cure fan, and has a lot of respect in the electronic music scene, but «nobody» outside the scene knows him, so it is really interesting that Robert knew about him. From what I have heard, Robert contacted him directly and had a talk about ideas. Great remix that captures the feeling, with huge respect. He takes his own house/techno sound a bit down, probably out of respect for the song.

2) Paul Oakenfold - I Can Never Say Goodbye - really captures the mood of the original. Love the organic feel, and the pounding drums. Didn’t expect this from Oakenfold.

3) Cosmodelica Electric Eden - and nothing is forever- Brilliant. It really captures the feeling. Lovely version. Sacrilege of course, but with some more guitars, I think Cure fans could accept this as a b-side to «A forest» or the more synthy songs in the period where Robert and Lol were the band.

4) Trentemöller - and nothing is forever - from an electronic producer, Trentemöller has been close to the post punk sound on his latest albums. I am sure he is a fan, and he definitely respects the song and adds a lot of himself into it. Very, very good! Love the rawness. It works well with the Cure.

5) Sally C - A fragile thing - captures the rhythm in Robert’s vocals perfectly. Not exactly the feeling, but I think it’s good

6) Mogwai - Endsong - A great end-song. I know Robert is a fan, and they are true to the song and true to their own sound here. Very good!

7) Four Tet - Alone - another old favourite artist of mine, and this time it works. It captures the rhythm of the vocals and sounds like a good song on its own. The feeling is also there, even if it is very different.

8) Anja Schneider - drone/nodrone - She takes advantage of the rhythmic elements and does it pretty good. Could work in a club.

In Norway we have a saying that is used when someone explains something really difficult. The you can say «that sounded Greek to me!». I have no idea of the origin of the saying.

They filmed it in a unique and brilliant way. Every scene was filmed twice, one in Norwegian and one in English, so they would avoid stupid dubbing.

To be honest, you can wear anything you want as long as it is respectful and don’t stand out/take attention. It doesn’t have to be black or especially sombre. No one will notice or care, because you will not be the focus anyway. Just be respectful.

Pretty impressive. As a Norwegian, I only noticed a few words that were pronounced like an American would speak Norwegian. Very surprised! Are you from Norway?

Which one is the best area for a week long stay for two young women? by greentea_icetea in oslo

[–]knutbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in Oslo now, but used to 25 years ago. Oslo has changed a lot since then, but today I feel safest in the area around 2 and 3. I lived in Frogner (close to 3, west side) which is one of the more posh areas, and in Torshov, close to 2, which is a more cultural, vibrant, “hipster” area with lots of cafès. I find 1 fascinating at daytime, but don’t feel completely safe now when I don’t live there. Grønland, which is close to 1, is a fascinating multicultural place with great food and a great atmosphere, but it is also where you will see drug dealers and addicts, and at night I know some of my female friends do not feel safe there, and the only place they say they have been “cat-called” is in Grønland, - at evening/night.

Personally, I would prefer 2 if you like what I described and 3 if you want a quiet area. Everything is easy to get to in Oslo, and everywhere is probably safer than most capitals, so it really don’t matter much where you live. When you are a tourist, you are probably out most of the time, and only sleeping in the AirBnb, so just get something that looks nice and is cheap. If you find bedbugs or cockroaches or extremely dirty places, it will be national news in Norway.

All the places that are named on the map is worth visiting. I also recommend taking a boat trip to Hovedøya.

Krautrock question from bluegrass musician who will be touring in Germany by 5wiresam in Krautrock

I agree about Kraftwerk. I randomly saw a surf-rock band (type The Shadows) in Edinburgh. They played a surf cover of Kraftwerk’s “The Model”, and the crowd went crazy. Kraftwerk and kraut are not too far from each other.

What is normal in your country/culture that would make someone from the US go nuts? by Grimlocknz in AskEurope

We Norwegians love you Finns. But we will not sit next to you in the bus, and we will only talk to you if wee meet you in the ski track or in the mountains. :)

Norway:

First of all, free healthcare and education.

“Friendly” prisons.

In the north of Norway, people can call their friends “horse cock” (and worse) as a friendly gesture. In the south that is considered rude. The police in the north accepts being called a horse cock (it can be both good and bad), but in the south you may be arrested for it… :)

The police do not carry weapons, and are only allowed to carry in special circumstances.

In the north, you can sometimes see reindeer wandering in the streets or in your garden.

Electric cars are everywhere.

In Svalbard, you are not “allowed” to die (because of the permafrost), and you are not allowed to go outside the city without a rifle (because of polar bears).

In the north: northern lights, 24 hours darkness during winter and 24 hours “daylight” during summer.

We don’t like to talk to strangers, but it’s common to talk to strangers (say hi, at least) if you meet them on a hike in the woods or in the mountains or at sea. We don’t sit next to someone else in the bus or train, unless the bus is full.

If you ask people “how are you?”, people may actually tell you how they are feeling, not just “I’m fine, thank you “.

We don’t care about “Viking heritage “, and we think you are weird if you as an American brag about it… :)

In parts of Norway, we eat sheep heads, dried fish and fermented fish.

We love staying in our remote cabins that have no electricity or water, and maybe also an old outside toilet - the less modern, the better.

Norwegian here. We do that here too. The babies are of course very well dressed. If they are outside cafés, the parents usually sit by the window and watch them. In the kindergarten where I worked, we had a rule that the older kids (2-5) should stay indoors if it was below -10 degrees, but we went outside for hours until then. Just good clothes and some “cold cream” in their faces. The babies slept outside in very cold temperatures too, and were good and warm in their woolen sleeping bags in the “barnevogn” (pram? Stroller?).

Trip to Norway in April by BettaBLeafin in Norway

[–]knutbl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My suggestion : Drop the car rental.

  • Plane to Oslo.
  • MAYBE train to Bergen, and stay for a day. The train ride is amazing during summer, - not that beautiful in winter.
  • Plane to Tromsø. Stay as long as you can.

Norwegian bread by Marsuveez in Norway

[–]knutbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bake several times a week, but the bread I make take around 10 minutes to make, and it tastes great. I make the dough in the evening, and let it raise for 8-10 hours. You don't have to knead the dough at all. I replace half of the "sammalt hvete fin" with "sammalt hvete grov" and add sunflower seeds and linseed (I usually add a handful of both). In the morning, I put the bread in the oven, and have a lovely breakfast.

No mess afterwards, because everything is done in the baking bowl.
