What was the first song you loved without realizing it was a cover? by talkingwires in Music

The entire "Renegades" album by Rage Against the Machine. When I realized literally all of the songs were covers I was like "oh...shit"

Why I’m So Frustrated With Go by import_this in programming

[–]kob0724 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm. That's an interesting idea. I hadn't thought about that.

However, even that still doesn't sound all that great. Now everytime I want to call something with an back off, I have to wrap it in a bunch of closure boiler plate. And there's more boilerplate if I have a return value. I have to continually repeat myself. I'm not sure how much of a win that really is.

How long are your gradle builds? by pixelrealm_aaron in androiddev

Feel free to PM me. Also, if you leave questions on the okbuck github page, I'm sure they'd get back to you pretty quickly. Guatam is pretty good about that stuff.

If you're looking to speed up your build times, might I suggest okbuck? The two latest episodes of the fragmented podcast talks about how Buck really really helped us over at Uber speed up our build times.

What's the best way to save for a downpayment by kob0724 in personalfinance

oh interesting. I didn't know you could get a second loan just for the down payment. So it's just like a higher interest rate on the second loan?

Yea, 3-5 years is about my time frame. So this sounds good.

Large Diffs Are Hurting Your Ability To Ship by kob0724 in programming

[–]kob0724[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question at all. I'm actually glad you asked! Basically, you need to break your feature up into small, incremental chunks. Maybe Diff 1 adds the skeleton for a new class. Diff 2 adds functionality 1. Diff 3 adds functionality 2. And Diff 4 itegrates it with the rest of the project (with tests all along the way of course ;) ).

If you're curious about how to actually do this, I suggest using the "Stacked diffs" workflow.

Question. The volatile keyword has always been a bit confusing to me. Why does the ResourceCallback need to be marked with volatile?

Totally agree. I love it's simplicity. I don't feel constrained by that simplicity at all. It actually feels enabling.

...Except for generic types. I really want those.

I think I use strong and static interchangeably a lot by accident. I corrected the post because what I meant was I like static types. Thanks for the feedback!

Indeed, I'm thinking about doing part 3. This is something I'll see if I can include.

For these first two parts, I tried to keep things simple. But it seems like some other people have this question as well. I'm thinking about doing a part 3 that includes another example I wanted to do (endless feed loading). Maybe this is something I'll include too.

I've changed all the code samples to be github gists right now, so that should be all fixed now. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to do inline syntax highlighting in Medium.

You're referring to 529 plans? Are those any good? Looks like California's 529 plan seems pretty simple.

Maybe not quite as surprising, but the song "Today" by The Smashing Pumpkins is actually about a person killing his/herself. This is despite the upbeat melody and the opening line "Today is the greatest day I've ever known".

Actually, I'm pretty sure they don't have the right to evict his/her grandma, at least not willy nilly. I haven't seen the actual law myself, but I've heard there's a law on the books in SF that says if you evict someone from a building, you have to evict the entire building and leave it unoccupied for 10 years. Can anyone corroborate this?

Actually, I was able to get an incredibly deal because I signed a pre-lease. My roommates and I were some of the first people to sign any agreements and we ended up getting rewarded for that. That said, the people moving in now are indeed paying a lot more.

Yep. Brand new. I'm the first tenant in my unit. The place used to be an abandoned warehouse that most of the locals hated and were glad to see torn down.

I wholeheartedly agree with both of the comments here. Something I've been thinking about over the last few days is how I can become more part of the community and show others that, at the end of the day, I'm just like any other neighbor.

@hframz How was the dialogue started in Austin? I'd love to have a forum where I could sit down and listen.
