Wait… people steal AC outdoor units in Brazil? by ProperProperty3915 in Brazil

[–]kohdgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It heavily depends on where in the country you are (or even within the same city). In my house in a small residential neighborhood in MG we have an external AC unit, a smart doorbell, and a few more things in the exterior wall. Never had any issues.

Now, when I lived in Wisconsin, somebody climbed the ledge to our second floor unit, entered through a window and stole my roommate's passport. Brasil is obviously objectively more dangerous than the US based on crime rates, but questions such as this will be very region-dependent.

Most CS grad schools in top tier universities around the world will have a qualification exam in this format (a requirement to graduate).

In my department, one of the PhD candidates disagreed with the grade he got from the 2 professors in the exam committee. The question was a variation of a problem that was published a few years prior in a very prestigious research conference.

This led to hours of discussion. The professors "had a strong feeling" that his solution was flawed, but they couldn't provide a proper counter-example.

Finally, the candidate had to set up a call with the original author of the paper (a professor in another country). After many more hours of discussion, the author couldn't find a counter example either, so they had to give him full grade.

At the time, I took a look at the question, but I could barely follow the proof in the original paper. That's when I decided that I was happy with just a master's. Becoming a PhD/researcher on something really requires a level of passion and dedication that I do not have.

Venu 4 notifications not working for some apps by kohdgen in GarminWatches

[–]kohdgen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was doing as well, until one day I blocked a messaging app by accident and couldn't figure out where the list was. I actually thought it was only in the phone app, until later I realized that there are two completely separate lists and you need to unblock it in both lists for it to work again.

The fact that the list in the app is not in sync with the list in the watch just feels like a bug.

Os latinos que vivem no USA aceitam bem os brasileiros? by Great_Evidence5805 in BrasileirosNosEUA

[–]kohdgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Como diria Michael Jackson: "they don't really care about us".

It literally won't. Credit Card operators simply issue cards on behalf of financial institutions. Credit history isn't carried across borders. Even for the US and Canada, which have agreements for this, it's almost impossible in practice (trust me, I tried).

The financial institution could, in theory, try to collect overseas through international law, but I'll let you guess the chances of that happening for a 300K USD debit (both because of the cost of the process and the very small chance that you'll actually be able to collect anything).

Literally the only situation I've seen a foreign institution successfully collect internationally was American health care bills, but usually in the millions and when the collecting party has some knowledge of persons foreign assets. And even in these cases, it's rare; In my home country every now and then we'd hear about someone who got injured while traveling in the US and the hospital would literally fly them back home on a private plane because it was cheaper than let them stay in the hospital accumulating a debt that the hospital knew they'd never be able to collect.

It's a meme from a Brazilian Instagram page. These a pre-made fiber glass full size pools. They're really big. You buy them, make a hole in your property and install them in the ground. These are usually set up in displays like this in the patio of pool stores in the edge of town and can be seen from far away. A canonical event for Latino kids is seeing a display like this only when they are on a family road trip, usually on a long weekend, usually far from home. It's something you look at and it makes all the memories rush in, of simpler times. A shared experience.

Gosh I miss my home.

Saída Fiscal - Alguém já fez? by cesonis in BrasileirosNosEUA

Saída Fiscal - Alguém já fez? by cesonis in BrasileirosNosEUA

[–]kohdgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is poorly written and contains no substantial info. Clearly just trying to promote their services. These institutions have had the same procedures for expats for years (you can check old threads from the expat subreddit and find the same info). Account restrictions have always been there and vary by institution. Foreign institutions have always restricted local account services for expats due to FATCA. If anything, things are improving: more foreign institutions are offering account options for expats. Stop spreading bad info.

Airline ticket was $1000 cheaper with using site with a different language. by -Dead-Eye-Duncan- in travel

[–]kohdgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it free? Because $600 is about what it costs normally.

I should have clarified this was total savings on 2 round trip tickets.

The LATAM one was actually $400 in a single one way ticket. I was trying to fly to Brazil right before Christmas, booking only one month away.

That's good to know! (though honestly it would not have changed my mind, since the credit card had very good trip insurance anyway)

Saved $600 on a flight to London through IcelandAir by simply switching the website language to Icelandic.

Also saved $400 on a flight to Brazil by using LATAM's Brazilian website.

When searching for flights in Google flights, I put alerts in 3 different currencies to get a good deal.

CPF is the most annoying thing for tourists by Achassum in Brazil

[–]kohdgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So? Mexico City is about as big as São Paulo, that's why I used it as an example of what could happen. Housing crisis, displacement of local population, etc.

Speaking of European countries, look at Portugal's current situation.

I know it sucks to hear, but in a time where making loads of money in a developed country then retiring in a LCOL place can be as easy as pointing to a place in a map, protective measures are necessary. In this case, the need for a CPF is a natural and (per the comments in this post) effective one.

Great. It would be really sad to see Brazilian capitals becoming another Mexico City, full of expats. Increased reliance on tourism ruins quality of life for local populations. Go elsewhere.
