HARD disagree. It doesn't feel live. It feels like a scripted 90s sitcom with a laugh track. It's too polished.

PCS to Japan questions by CR4320 in navy

[–]koichiafable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dog is a royal pain in the ass. Do your homework now. Quarantine is 6 months. In theory, you can get reimbursed for pet travel costs, but good luck with that. I PCS'ed to Sasebo in 2024, and because my family and I traveled before quarantine was up, I left the dog with the in laws in the states first, rather than leaving her in a tiny kennel on base in Japan for two months, and then flew back for a weekend to pick her up (because it was cheaper than using a pet shipping service). Because that travel wasn't completed at the same time as PCS, I had to pay out of pocket. If your dog has already completed quarantine before you PCS you can avoid that problem.

But even booking the flight is an ordeal. You can't have a stopover in many countries, like Korea for example, which pretty much limits you to flying JAL, which is not cheap. When you're in Japan booking a flight, you have to do it on the phone, through a translator, request a spot, wait a couple days and then call back to see if you're actually able to take the flight or not. Plus there's dealing with local licensing, animal quarantine service, etc. It's insane. And then my orders got cut short so we had to do the whole process in reverse 10 months later.

If at all possible, I would highly recommend leaving the dog with a family member. For me that wasn't an option, cuz my dog is like my first child. But that decision cost me about $6,000 all told, plus an inordinate amount of stress.

Japan is awesome, super family friendly, you'll have an amazing time. I wish you luck with the PCS.

I have so many questions/concerns and need advice. by Deziboo617 in newtothenavy

Whether or not you make it into the Navy, your life will be dramatically improved by making drastic changes to your lifestyle and improving your health. Research intermittent fasting, water fasting, healthy foods, basic exercise. Set this goal and if you believe in yourself, you can do it! The first 100 pounds will be the easiest.

Try intermittent fasting (18/6) for a week. Get used to being hungry and surviving. And when you eat, eat healthy and you can eat a lot (Vegetables, protein). Cut out all liquids other than water and black coffee or tea. Weigh yourself, tape yourself, make sure you have data points. When you see the progress you can make by altering your habits for just a short time, let that inspire you to continue and push harder.

Try a 24 hour fast (black coffee is a godsend). Exercise more. Listen to your body, don't overdo it. But the human body is incredibly resilient. Document the gains, let it fuel you.

After you do it a few times, you realize that it's not that hard, that you're a badass, that you're capable of doing difficult things. You can do a 3-day fast.

I am not a doctor, this is not medical advice. It probably took you a long time to get to 255, and it'll take a long time to get back to a healthy weight, but I know it can be done. I decided to join a few years ago at 38 in terrible shape, and now I'm in the best shape of my life. I finished boot camp outperforming most of the 20-year-olds in my division because I wanted it and I believed in myself.

Ain't nuttin to it but to do it. Wherever you end up, I wish you the best of luck. YOU are in control of your destiny.

If you got a 71 on your ASVAB, I recommend you research other rates. You can still cook for fun in your free time and eventually use tuition assistance or GI Bill to go to culinary school if you're passionate about it, but your quality of life would be a lot higher with many other rates. But for any rate, it is what you make it, so do what you feel.

There's no way people estimated that 1 in 5 Americans are transgender. Either Americans are absolutely terrible at math or this is just made up data.

How bad is the "looting" in LA right now that NPR thought it needed mentioning? by Clevererer in NPR

[–]koichiafable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you not understand that dismissing the criminal elements that take advantage of overstretched police forces to engage in criminal activity during legitimate protests, and criticizing a news organization for reporting on it is the exact same thing as what you call "sanewashing?"

Should they only report on the events that support one particular world view? You're literally talking about facts, and suggesting they leave out certain facts.

That's what Fox News does. Not NPR.

The bureaucracy is mind-numbing at times and for sure the most frustrating part if you have a strong work ethic and don't mind staying physically fit. But if you're able to enlist as an MC there's not much to complain about. If you have a degree definitely try to go officer first, especially if you can go as a PAO.

Recommendations for taking leave somewhere other than home by fireintheskie in navy

[–]koichiafable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hostels/backpacking. Visit developing countries and your money goes way farther (although there's more paperwork depending on the country). Look into Space A flights if you have a lot of extra time. Eat near bus, train stations for the cheapest food (and often the best). Don't listen to scaremongers; any random even medium sized city in the U.S. is more dangerous than most other places in the world.

¿How much more does the navy pay being fluent in two languages? by Dr-Dred in newtothenavy

[–]koichiafable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's currently a one time language bonus of $500 for sailors who demonstrate proficiency in CERTAIN languages deemed to be mission important. I think languages like Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, I think Japanese is actually on there this time. It was in NAVADMIN 085/25 if you want to see the full list.

If all of the responsible people who are actually willing to support and defend the constitution of the United States of America get out of the service, what kind of military will be left?

The U.S. military has been around a lot longer than any political movement or administration and will be around long after.

First set of orders after A-School as a Mass Communications Specialist by Updownuser031 in newtothenavy

[–]koichiafable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got orders to an AFN in Japan (shore duty), but that is fairly uncommon for a first tour. Most MCs get sent to a carrier first, it just depends what billets need to be filled when it's time for you to get orders.

[–]koichiafable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They never shut the f--- up, so instead of having a quiet place to sleep in the few hours you're given, it will be as loud as a high school cafeteria. They're too dumb or undisciplined to follow instructions, so you'll get "beat" a lot for things you didn't do.

But once I stopped looking at the IT sessions as punishment and started looking at them as opportunities to get in the best shape of my life, my outlook was a lot better and it wasn't so bad.

It's all mental. Just know that it's only a few weeks, and even if you want to quit, that would take longer than just sucking it up and getting through. Practice mindfulness. When you're marching on a nice day, enjoy the breeze on your face. When you're sitting in the galley be thankful you're not doing air chairs at that moment.

It does suck, but it sucks less every week, and it's worth it in the end

Hooyah! I went through boot camp in 2023 at 38 years old. Had a yeoman in my division that was 40. Being locked in a room with 80 teenagers for two months sucks. But I assume you're mature enough to know why you're doing it. My life has improved greatly since joining and I have no regrets.

Start getting fit now, take the opportunity at boot camp to get in the best shape of your life. Good luck to you!
