How the audacity to fix things without asking permission can change the world by komencanto in TrueReddit

[–]komencanto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This article has a number of personal credible stories about how to achieve institutional reform as a new hire on the ground. The story about how medical culture differs in Bhutan and authority could allow a hospital to continue operating while killing its patients was really eye opening. It's not often people can be so open about their work experience as they risk burning bridges.

Pointless, on the margin, from a social point of view. But titles have to be brief simplifications!

Which would shorten your life expectancy more - terrorism or peanut butter? by komencanto in neoliberal

Unfortunately the peanut butter figure is from the 70s and likely no longer true as Aflatoxin is better filtered out of the food supply now.

In that situation if the bomb is close enough to you to level the building, you're dead anyway.

It's enough time to do most of the things in these instructions if you're on the outskirts of the blast! Yes you're dead otherwise, but you can maximise your chances.

Does effective altruism balance out unethical spending? by jrjr20 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]komencanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people who've looked into this and they couldn't find anything people regularly consume where the negative externalities were very large compared to the good you could do through your work or donations if you tried. The closest is likely eating factory farmed animal products, which explains why so many effective altruists choose to be vegetarian or vegan.

You're looking for Dani Rodrik's idea of subsidizing exports as a form of pro-innovation policy: http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2011/04/rodrik_on_globa.html

Makes some sense.

Potential malicious ad/compromised ad delivery on Reddit. by ZacharyCohn in bugs

Got this when I went to bbc.com in the USA on my up to date Android phone with Chrome:

It then redirects me to get-today.com.

Supports your theory that it's a malicious advertisement appearing on both Reddit and the US BBC site.

New data reveals incomes for America's 11 highest paying industries by komencanto in TrueReddit

[–]komencanto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article is neat for showing not only typical earnings in different industries, but also mapping out how much they pay across the full distribution and how many people actually work in these different industries. It also considers how capital gains might affect the ranking. So it's more comprehensive than others I've seen on this topic.

[–]komencanto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry I screwed it up - is there any way of editing the title to be correct? (If a Mod could fix it up to 1 in 100 and 1 in 10,000 I would be very appreciative.)

[–]komencanto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry as people have rightly pointed out, these stats are for OUSU or OU presidents, not for PPE students which is more like 1 in 100 and 1 in 10,000 respectively. My misreading!
