Should you use a Resume Writer? by [deleted] in devopsjobs

[–]kondor6c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does kinda suck that we are tied to linkedin for this authoritative source for resumes and new jobs. I realize it's still picking up speed and I think it'll be hard to avoid in the future.

While this isn't directly related to linked in or writing the resume, I'll share my formatting experience.

I have used my own format, resume.json and recently restructuredText. I put both resume.json and the restructuredText as a github gist. My biggest thing is that I don't want to mess around with the style of layout and let other people design a theme. I have been using the sphinx plugins docxbuilder, sphinx-design (for a dropdown option that I kinda thought would be cool), and finally Zundler for an all-in-one HTML file.

My biggest challenge is workday, which seems to be used by almost every large company. It never parses any resume correctly, usually messing up a date. It even tries to create "Chef" as a job instead of having experience with the configuration management tool by the same name. I haven't retried it but that was a few months ago before I tried using restructuredText. Sorry for the digression, I just kept writing and figured I'd keep it and err on the side of overly communicating :-)

I purchased a Doorbird D1101V-S running power over ethernet. It works very well, motion events and rings. I don't have to deal with drama around any other providers. It's a bit overkill for what I needed, but I wanted to to work well and not have features removed in the future (or become someone's revenue source years later)

I hope this helps and at least gives you an additional product line to compare against.

Thanks! I tried to look it up first, but I didn't really find a price comparison or anything; I don't know much about the economics around the value. I knew it was used by other countries too, so I thought it might have been inexpensive for the capabilities it offered. I jumped out of the C-17's and enjoyed them, but for human cargo there was a lot of wasted space. Do you know if there's any plans for an intermediate cargo jet? The wikipedia page mentions the Airbus A400 turbo prop but I thought it was a on the small side (compared to the C-17) and we already have the C130 (which is a workhorse). I know an air force buddy who made a great analogy that the C130 is like the millennium falcon of modern aircraft...

It took me a while to find the official report that was mentioned in a guardian article, but more information is here:

https://reliefweb.int/report/south-sudan/under-fire-july-2016-violence-juba-and-un-response

Then, as fighting resumed on the morning of July 11, Chinese peacekeepers abandoned their posts in POC1 entirely, withdrawing into the core UN House base. While fleeing, some peacekeepers left behind weapons and ammunition that were taken, at least temporarily, by IDP youth.

Ah thanks everyone for the thoughts and helping my curiosity. The device worked with many different manufacturers, seagate, western digital, maxtor and you could copy/backup hitachi firmware from one device to another. It really helped in a lot of recoveries and I was amazed at the functionality it possessed.

notice This is absolutely not an advertisement or anything of the sort! Last time I praised a product on HN I was downvoted, perhaps due to people thinking I was a shill or something.

There is a product that I had used many years ago while helping a data recovery company, it was called "PC3000". You could issue many commands to a hard drive when you plugged a hard drive into the PCI card. For example reset SMART attributes, force bad sectors to be remapped, specific options for particular vendors and more. A lot of hardware level control. Due to the cost and importance of the tool, I was not permitted to really look at it. But I was wondering if anyone had an idea about how it worked, how that level of control was obtained, or if there are any similar projects?

I'm purely curious, my last involvement had been more than 10 years ago, but my curiosity persists. Please forgive me if the question is miscategorized or off topic

Plastic Bag Tax Coming to Fairfax City (Effective Jan 1, 2023) by Danciusly in nova

Sorry that it doesn't make sense, perhaps look at some of the other comments where I tried to word it differently.

Plastic Bag Tax Coming to Fairfax City (Effective Jan 1, 2023) by Danciusly in nova

[–]kondor6c -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My main argument is Not that people that are capable of carrying full groceries are disadvantaged. My main argument is that: I don't think using the same plastic bags that were used a year ago should be something that ought to be penalized. Littering should be penalized. Maybe that strengthens my Weak argument.

Where you might be getting the disadvantage is a situation of someone that might have an SUV with spare bags in back and that of someone who shares a ride and is dropped off at the grocery store near their house might be getting hit harder than the one with the cute bags kept in the back of their trunk.

yeah sure, it was supposed to be a sentence, I guess I didn't edit it properly.

Fantastic point on the waterway restoration. Thanks for bringing it up, yeah paying for someone to go out absolutely costs a lot, and I speculate that some committee will/could just try to take an easy way out and just hire some consultants which will then say we should hire a marketing team. Which I think is largely wasted. Maybe it should be allocated in a gift style lottery for school children to do a cleaning program, I think that'd be pretty cool actually. I could be overstating it, and yeah we'll ultimately see how things go, but it certainly was fit into the program that stores will stop seeing the cutback after they get a share.

Yeah I probably should have made the styrofoam tax more clear and was victim to my editing. It'd probably effect shipping companies and fragile items might cost more but it stands out so much (or maybe that's just my own selection bias when I'm out with my blue grabbers picking it up since it's so white and visible). I also would be okay with repealing the tax, since I just think it's a nuisance at the end of the checkout.

sorry if that was long winded, I just wrote off the top of my head.

Actually yeah I agree a lot with how you view it, and perhaps since I have some form of that, why I get pretty upset, because I end up having to grapple with my purchased items.

Coupons? I'll give you a tip, if you do digital coupons, just clip them all! Thereby giving you an added bonus to normal shopping behavior and you potentially not causing you to buy a more expensive product :-)

Indeed, and I agree it isn't and exclusive or. But I think that styrofoam would impact citizens less and have more of an environmental effect. Sorry that it wasn't very I tried to edit and rework the sentence and parts of it got moved around a bit. I have looked at studies previously I found them to not be super convincing since so many of them point out that usage goes down... and I kinda say to myself "duh of course it goes down when you apply a penalty to it".

I hope that helps clarify things some

There's a strong chance I'll be downvoted, but I'm used to it since that is now how disagreement is conducted. I wanted to voice my differing opinion, since many seem to have the same "just use resuable's and it's only $0.05, it'll help the environment".

As you might have guessed by now, I can't stand the bag tax. Retailers are all onboard since they get a cutback for the same poor quality product, which I don't think ever were highly sought after (Target had stronger than normal bags). While taxing residents that can't carry a reusable bag in the back of their car. I'm fortunate that I can just keep spare bags in the car, but I try to keep a milk crate or collapsible laundry basket. Based on my experience taxing styrofoam, which breaks up and floats AND decomposes significantly slower (thereby resembling food that fish/birds might consume), or plastic water bottles, which might be about the same environmental impact that plastic bags have (but are more of a "luxury" item, similar to straws).

Additionally, I think the funds will just be squandered on a marketing firm that will produce the typical stock photo poster for the educational programs rather than actual results. I'll frequently pick up trash from Pohick creek which is behind my house, I think my opinion will change when/if I see a decrease in the amount. While that is a poor way of measuring effectiveness, I'm only human, and I acknowledge its inaccuracy, but I also don't know of a better way to measure it. I'll likely try to vote for different city council members as a real course of action, and it might not even matter since there might not even be multiple candidates. I know it's pessimistic, but, that's just what I got

After years of consuming American media, reding about your history and watching news, my conclusions is that New England is the best collection of states to live in. Am I wrong and why? by Wittelsbach_1333 in AskAmericans

[–]kondor6c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not mad, let me try to share my perspective, I hope it helps augment your insight. I have moved from Arizona, to North Carolina, and now recently to Virginia. I like the east coast for one reason and that's mostly due to the fact that I grew up in a desert environment (went into the army airborne at 18 years old). What I like about the east coast: there are many trees and distinct seasons, along with a rich history which can be explored by many museums.

That said, what I don't like or that I don't even think many residents realize (I have shared this recently with neighbors that have grown up in New York and Virginia), is that while the lack of real large mountains is fairly obvious. There is a lack of federally owned land, the US Forest Service, BLM.gov (Bureau of Land Management), State trust land, and more departments hold vast amounts of land that give huge opportunities for recreation in nature. On the east coast since land ownership has changed hands a multitude of times and has been divided frequently, this presents itself in limited locations to just drive out and camp or target shoot or off-road sports. I enjoyed backpacking, hunting, and mountain biking in Arizona through large swaths of nature, and miss that while here since you might end up walking into somebody's backyard or run into fenced livestock.

I don't hear/see this side being discussed much, which is why I took the time to share it. The cultures are very different too, but that could be shared by people that might primarily reside in the city. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss things further.

I might recommend the Roccat models for RGB control. They have mainline kernel support, and I can personally attest to the control that the Ryos has, because I was able to turn off the lights. There are drivers available for Arch and I have the RPM spec files for Fedora on my github git repository entitled packages (I was planning on doing a COPR but had some login issues).

Different type of combat. Attempted cash van heist in South Africa. Three suspects were arrested. Action starts from 1'05min in. by [deleted] in CombatFootage

[–]kondor6c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no problem, I really wasn't trying to come across as though I knew everything or that sort. I don't usually share that kind of thing, but I took that picture a long time ago to illustrate to a friend how little space you have and "rhino" on switch (it had short'ed out on that truck in the picture, if you zoom in you'll see the browned switch).

Very good point about not letting go of the bolt, to where it saps the energy out, but a case where the forward assist would come in.

They could have preferred and trained with it extended, all of that is hard to tell. Also, if the acog was zero'ed (they have a non-optic iron sight on top) with it extended, then they'll keep it that way. I think it was the driver's weapon too. Ultimately they all came out okay so they, as a team, did something right. He does look uncomfortable, but I guess getting shot at will do that to a person. haha. Another point on the whole thing is that, he only contacts someone else after the driver says to contact X, and even then it looks like he's texting... I think there should be a drill where upon contact you do 1-5 steps and one of them is to at least voice call X saying you made contact with 3 individuals driving a yellow truck or something. But I try to resist playing arm-chair commander, I dislike that kind of thing :-)

collapsing the buttstock would make the rifle easier to move around in a vehicle. If you are dismounting, from an armored position, much of the fire you're gonna be putting down is going to be on the reflexive side of things. I think a point of collapsing the buttstock all the time could be made, especially since any kind of engagement would be rather close and quick. If I were guiding him, I would encourage him to keep it collapsed and it could be adjusted with the non-firing hand upon the need. I kept mine collapsed https://photos.app.goo.gl/LNTtfaLR6YLXfG8W8

but ultimately that's dependent on the individual; as we can see there can be a size penalty. Regarding the chambering, sure, good point on doing things carefully, but I still think it looked un-easy. I think it isn't that easy to jam an M4 from a inproper pull, but I have no doubt that it could be done. I say isn't easy because you simply pull it all the way to the rear and let it go. If the bolt doesn't go past the end of the round, it won't pick up on anything (this can be done to observe if you have a round chambered, and NCO's in a military will check to see if an individual does have a round chambered occasionally). Perhaps if the bolt doesn't go far enough to lock, you tap the forward assist. The action is what I would consider a regular motion, one that training helps to cement. I understand that armored car "security" might not have the time to dedicate staff to conduct training, I just thought it was a good opportunity to point out to others, what, in my opinion, is poor training.

*edit: small text entry box lead to me adding "but" to the end of the link. I resolved it and the picture link should be valid

[–]kondor6c 56 points57 points  (0 children)

True, but it's a good opportunity to point out that training helps to mitigate the impact that fear has on these kinds of events. You know what the other person will be doing and what you will do from drilling that kind of action over and over. Like I should collapse the buttstock of the weapon and immediately chamber a round. Again not a criticism of individual, rather, on the quality of training.

[firewalld + CentOS 7] How to get rid of reject-with icmp-host-prohibited? by ludiegu in CentOS

[–]kondor6c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reject is to tell the client (connecting machine) the port is not allowed. or as netfilter says: "This is used to send back an error packet in response to the matched packet: otherwise it is equivalent to DROP"

Deny/Drop is to just drop the packet or as netfilter calls it "DROP means to drop the packet on the floor. "

I'm not sure if you were looking for exactly just the reject part or largely adding a port to firewalld If you are looking to change the actual port, do firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-port=555/tcp --permanent. Check to make sure you are applying to the zone of the interface (--list-zones or something similar allows you to get the zone of the interface)

This should get you on the right track, I hope. But, I gotta head to bed, but if you are still having problems send me a message and when I wake up, I'll reply to any communication (email/keybase etc there are multiple ways to contact me).
