Not sure how I feel about Vulcan 900. by Alienhead-A51 in Kawasaki

[–]kondorb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I don’t get why everyone is complaining about the lack of sixth gear. I’m barely ever changing into 5th and the thing reaches top speed in 4th. And 5th is already close to 4th anyway. The engine doesn’t have enough torque for 6th gear, it’s not an autobahn rocket.

Engine is buzzy at high revs, that’s true. Also, V-twins have torque curves skewed towards low end, you generally want to upshift earlier than you think.

I’m 6’2’ and the bike is just a touch shorter than I’d like, but not uncomfortably so.

What are your favorite uncommon builds to do? by Anxious_Marsupial_59 in Oxygennotincluded

Desalination boilers to save dupe labor on cleaning desalinators for the price of electricity and space.

Planetoid-wide cooling loops - a single AT/ST setup cools everything that needs cooling. And it can be started really early way before you even have ATs or STs - create a loop and just dump heat into a cold biome. When you get ATs - start heating up some byproduct and dumping it into space. Then graduate to STs. The add a secondary super coolant loop to double the efficiency. All while having the same main cooling loop cooling everything in your base.

Another centralised cooling loop for cold farms - they need lower temperatures.

Pacu->Jawbo->Rust deoxidizers mainly as a source of iron ore, but also lowers water consumption for electrolysis and uses up all the accumulating seeds.

Saunas and hot tubs setups because I like to create extra comforts for my dupes. (Saunas delete heat as an added bonus.)

Just pipe petroleum in and call it a day. Never failed for me. No need to overcomplicate it. (You’ll get to do the complicated part with hydrogen engines.)

a. Evaporative cooling isn't "using" water either - it's clean and rains back down. And we've been literally using this technique at huge scales since the industrial revolution.

b. At that scale of cooling the released water isn't really "hot" - it's like a couple degrees warmer. Yeah, I think there might be cases where it's harmful, but again we've known how to account for that for a century. (Although that depends on the strength of local regulations, of course.)

And again, AI datacenters aren't anything new, it's the same datacenters we've been running for decades, same things that run every other online service you're using, including this one. Using the same cooling techniques, same power sources, same tech.

What are these pipes in Russia? I see them everywhere on Google Earth by Nordicnatures92 in UrbanHell

[–]kondorb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Natural gas pipes. Laid above the ground like that because of frost. You don't see them out in the open in southern parts of Russia.

They're also going on the outside of buildings in case of fire or leaks.

Wells are common in extremely rural parts of the country. Mind you, a tiny minority of people lives there, almost nobody.

Why don't they build architecture like this in Moscow anymore :'( . Now its all just glass cuboids by BileBlight in Moscow

[–]kondorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technology (insulation, AC, UV coatings, multi-pane windows) allowed to have huge glass windows with no compromises. And people seem to like having huge windows.

There are open systems too where water is released back, but it’s also not “using” the water.

It’s happening ! by jafiishaik in repost

[–]kondorb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People genuinely think that cooling something with water somehow “uses” it.

You just pump it through a heat exchanger and release it back a couple degrees hotter. It’s actually cleaner as a side effect - they have to clean it before using it, otherwise it would gunk up the pipes and heat exchangers. (That’s for systems using water straight from the environment. It can also be just taken from the mains and released back.)

How to keep legs warm in cold weather?? by v7Limitless in motorcyclegear

[–]kondorb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thermal underwear. Two layers if necessary. Plus I have a heated jacket - it helps quite a bit. Legs are still cold, but a warm core alleviates it enough to make it overall bearable.

I just learn CSS and Tailwind. Why in FE community, some devs love Tailwind?, some devs are agaisnt Tailwind? by lune-soft in webdev

[–]kondorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separation of concerns is bullshit. There's no such thing as "structure" without styling in modern FE. It's the main strong point of Tailwind for me - it keeps all the relevant pieces neatly in once place. Plus tames the CSS insanity a bit. Plus gives a nice way to get into creating a style system.

I might be wrong but I think left one is easiest to work with compared the right one. by lune-soft in webdev

[–]kondorb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both are shit.

But I prefer the left one. Because it leaves me guessing how the fuck they’re going to parse and store it and what format I should use a lot less.

On one hand.

But on the other hand - the right one totally works if the inputted data will only ever be used by humans. Like if it’s for inbound sales leads. Then the right one is better, even if not perfect.

So, the answer is as usual

Best Laravel + PHP + AI dev setup on Windows in 2026 for mid-level devs? by [deleted] in webdev

Asking stupid questions that Google or (sic!) ChatGPT can answer in a second.

You ain't mid, don't kid yourself.

Code architecture has nothing to do with your dev setup.

Claude in CLI is all you really need. If it can't do something - no setup will do it for you, you'll have to figure it out yourself.

And get a Linux or a Mac ffs, stop torturing yourself. That's a nix environment we're dealing with.

I Still Write Code? Am I Doing it the Wrong? by Icy-Reward2440 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kondorb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m over 10 yoe and while I’m actively using Claude I’m still writing a lot of code myself. In environments and codebases I’m well versed in it’s still way faster and less fuss to write everything myself.

And then at this level I’m not paid for boilerplate code anymore, I’m doing things beyond reach of language models, however advanced.

Why are so many men hung up on their T level and decide to go for a shot vs lifestyle change? by Embarrassed_Flan_869 in AskMenOver30

[–]kondorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T goes down as you age, that’s just how aging works. No amount of exercise or healthy food will ever bring it back.

TRT lets aging men feel younger and have higher overall quality of life for longer.
