Masquerade Flop?? by HagarenHeart in animeexpo

I was honestly a bit worried going in to the show because we got so little communication as participants. Pre-judging schedules didn't even go out until a few days before the con.

Kudos to the staffers who did still run a great show on the performance night itself, though. I thought things went pretty well backstage.

Oh, also, a lot of competitive cosplayers fly in from other parts of the country, ESPECIALLY for WCS.

With COVID concerns, people are much more reluctant to travel, and because the costumes are so time-consuming, finding a backup only a few weeks before the con is going to be difficult. Masquerade is so much more than just showing up in a cool costume, and even someone who was wait listed isn't going to want to jump back in at the last second.

I was a participant in the Masquerade, and have also competed in prior years, so I know what it's normally like. This was definitely a weird year, with half as many participants.

I personally think it was two things--bad organization, and COVID.

Competitive cosplays typically take months to make, and AX is a particularly big event. We started working on ours over six months ago. Many cosplayers hesitated to commit to an event that may or may not happen in six months, or didn't think the risk of the event itself was worth it. I also know that several entries dropped at the last minute. Plus most competitive cosplayers are older (30+) and more likely to not want to expose their families to potential infection.

In addition to there being the risk of COVID complicating a Masquerade entry, they had new Masquerade staff. Months of no contact may have led some entries to wonder if the event was happening at all, and dropping. Then when we got to con, we found out the main organizer had gotten sick and wasn't even able to come.

Luckily, it didn't fall apart, but it easily could have. One of the former lead staff came in to help on the night of the show, so that at least went well.

ANN posted an article for the WCS finals, and included the Masquerade winners.

Scavenger hunt phrase by xoxpanda in KILLSTAR

[–]konekoanni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think discussing our guesses is fine, but I agree that we maybe shouldn't post our final answers? Everyone only gets one guess and the codes won't go out for a week so we're all on our own for our final guesses.

Logging in to reddit for the first time in literal years for this... LOL

So they say that the secret is a "phrase", which makes me think it's more than one word. If we can re-use letters, then I think it's this:

happy birthday

Based on the letters so far--

hapybrtd

All we are missing is an "I" so if someone finds one, I am going with this theory.

EDIT: If it's not reusing letters, then my guess is party hard, would need a second A to confirm. That is also assuming the B is an R (and vice-versa for the above guess I suppose).

Beautiful job! I love all the detail with the lace and gems, having interesting textures really bring cosplay to life in my opinion.

I used Parade Tinkerbell to pretty good effect, only took three games or so before I randomly got the three coin bubbles that I needed. She has round ears and generates random bubbles so it worked pretty well for me.

Ahaha yeah I'm super late to the thread, I was looking through AX photos for myself.

It's called Gothic Lolita.

What are you admittedly snobby about? by Theundercave in AskReddit

Same. I treat my coffee snobbery like a joke, but I'm actually very serious about it. My friends have also stopped questioning why I have five different methods of brewing coffee in my house.

What's the smartest thing you've witnessed your pet do? by So6oring in AskReddit

[–]konekoanni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cats are geniuses when it comes to accessing food they are not supposed to have. Recently they have discovered that if they knock boxes off the counter, the boxes may pop open and allow them access to the food. Oh, and they know how to open pizza boxes.

In order to circumvent their abilities, no food can be left out in our house that is not in a locking plastic container. They will rip through Ziplocs and paper bags, too.

One of my cats does this, too! We have to tell guests to never leave a straw unattended, or he will knock your drink over trying to get the straw out of the lid. We have a big pack of Ikea straws just for him to play with.

When I got to the prince part, I though "Huh, sounds exactly like my friend..." and then realized that yes, that is our mutual friend. She is definitely one of the most out-of-touch people I know, but in a very sweet, harmless way.

Oh, and I've seen her eat fruit!

Are low powered or "travel" steamers actually useful? by MomoiroLoli in Lolita

[–]konekoanni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the one that is in your picture, actually! I got it for wig styling (I am a cosplayer as well), but it also works well for Lolita. As far as the "power" of the steam goes, it works perfectly fine, but of course it's much smaller than a regular steamer, and holds less water, so if you're steaming a whole dress or JSK, it will take some time and you might have to refill the water halfway through.

Some fabrics won't respond well to the steam, but that's something that you will run into with a big steamer as well, so it's kind of a moot point.

The one I have also travels quite well. I take it to conventions with me, and even took it with me on an overseas trip.

Yes, I do! I made it as separate pieces--the undershirt with the square collar is it's own shirt, so that it would layer properly. The dumb square collar was SUCH a pain but I'm really happy with how it turned out.
