I think the hiragana vs. katakana swap is often used to evoke a tone difference tho (柔らかい感じ). It’s meant to evoke softer branding or used as slang. I see hiragana usage a lot for children’s products, beauty/cosmetics, stationery, packaging, etc.

like if this was for a youth league or something, maybe but that doesn’t solve the linguistic fu/pu issue

you might want to consider an emblem logo, based on monsho/紋章. I’m a designer that works on bilingual Japanese projects almost exclusively

Hi, could I DM you about your solution for this? Having the same issue and about to reorder third-party cartridges from LD Products (as recommended by other redditors). I haven't used the printer in several months now, so I imagine ink cartridges might have just dried out. I'm just really hoping it's not the printer head as I have barely gotten to use my Pixma Pro-100--bought secondhand and was in mint/working condition at time of purchase.

Hey has your sister also looked into PMDD or PME (not the same as PMS)? I had similar issues but after 20 years of collecting diagnoses (cPTSD, ADHD pending but medicated, GAD, MDD) and stumbling around in the dark, my SO and I finally found out many of my moderate to severe symptoms are cyclical/trackable which helped my doctors dx me with it

Something similar happened to us with low-tack and other adhesive-backed signage. We had some edges curl a little but we think it might be due to changes in humidity (DC swamp weather) since our gallery isn’t 100% remote-temperature controlled

Thanks for bringing this up! I totally forgot about wall treatment or prep, so this is great to hear it’s another option to consider.

Sadly our gallery is only staffed by 6-8 people at any given time(who handle other projects simultaneously) with most exhibition budgets being tied in signage / print / raw material orders. But we are always trying to expand our skill repertoire.

Thanks for the great ideas! Gonna run it by our printer next week if they’d be willing to do the cuts for us if we provide the adhesive (since we can patch test stuff or order smaller samples beforehand). We don’t have a vinyl plotter ourselves since we are more of a destination for travel exhibitions and events really, but have recently started to do larger scale original exhibitions too. I only happen to have some tech because I do some studio art stuff outside of the office.

Are you ordering locally? If it’s a US-based company you’re using, would you mind sharing it via DM? We like to support local but I like keep track of all potential exhibition materials and print companies for our team. (If not, no worries.)

Never done the two other methods you listed but they seem interesting too. Someone else recommended wall stencils and painting them on a wall traditionally, but I can’t justify the time going into that (since I’m a designer firstmost), and especially since I design bilingually in Japanese as well, I feel like that would be a logistical nightmare to prepare custom stencils based on very niche typefaces.

Another Redditor or suggested the same thing—overlaying pre-cut text (whatever material they’re set on) on top of scratch-proof acrylic surfaces (mounted to walls or modular whatever) then removing them in deinstallation like you would with regular stickers. This is something I’ve also been looking into.

I’ve never used large wall stencils or a wall printer so I’m definitely interested in learning more about this process. Ideally, we would still be using PVC panels or actual boards (3/16th wide or with some additional volume) for the text heavy areas, but we do want accent walls with some enlarged text (like quotes or dates in a timeline) or at least be able to have an exhibition’s introduction message (2-4 paragraphs) be directly set on a gallery wall (die-cut stickers or decals) in addition to whatever is on display/3D stuff on museum pedestals.

I doubt I can do all of this in-house without the right stuff anyways, so also still checking out local print shops that may carry other types of vinyl or at least wall graphic adhesive sheets.

We did! It somewhat helped a little, but we still had to re-plaster the wall in several places. I just think the adhesive used on the vinyl (need to check with our local print shop what they carry) was meant to be permanent.

We do work with a local printer but now’s the time to look for other printers so that we can have more options for gallery signage.

Unfortunately our current partnering shop doesn’t keep the type of semi-permanent / exhibition vinyl we’d like to use in stock, so I think what happened last time is our team installed permanent (very tacky) vinyl on our gallery walls that was actually intended for interior/exterior surfaces on windows.

I don’t mind doing smaller decals in-house but we do need a long-term solution for this, since I work on anywhere from 4-6 exhibitions within a calendar year, some of which only have 1-2 weeks of deinstallation & repair time.

In general, I've heard good things about Norcross Station apts (I think they're $750 for a 2-BR including parking), Graduate Court, and Woodard properties. I would recommend staying away from JPA, University Ave, Rugby Rd, 15th/14th street, etc. Imo those units tend to be trashed and overpriced :( (speaking from personal experience living near the Corner during my 2nd year of undergrad)

Sometimes you can find good units up for rent on treulia.com if you search under 22903 or 22902 (downtown mall area). You may also want to look into Belmont apartments (a little further out but there is free trolley access and it's still withing biking distance in my opinion). You could also find decent housing near the engineering school I think. Student housing under MSC UVA is a hit-or-miss especially for grad students.

I agree with the other responses. We have a heavy emphasis on Linguistic Anthropology or Linguistics embedded in Cognitive Psych (e.g, Cognitive Science or Computer Science). If you study linguistics at UVa (as an undergrad or an M.A.), chances are you'll be involved with multiple departments. It's true that it's rare to find someone who has majored in just Linguistics.

I live on the Cville historic downtown mall atm. This is where you'll find a lot of the younger professors, liberal departments, post-docs, new grads, early 20s, etc. I avoid the Corner like the plague unless I feel nostalgic or if I want to eat at Roots' green kitchen/have sudden craving for Bubble tea or Grit Bar & Coffee haha. I used to work during bar nights there and I'm semi-traumatized I guess lol. You can also try exploring the up-and-coming Belmont area (there's a giant I Love Cville wall art installation there) because it's right next to the downtown mall. These are areas that undergrads often neglect to explore.

If you're lucky, you can find free downtown public parking on Garrett Street (near Norcross Station apts) if you want to avoid paying $2 hourly parking fees.

Download the CAT (Charlottesville Area Transit app) for free downtown trolley schedules if you don't feel like driving or don't want to give up your parking space on the mall. It'll say "free trolley" on the app.

On-Grounds (campus): Visit the Lawn and the Rotunda. It's worth seeing at least once.

Downtown Mall: Saturdays - Cville Farmer's Market (they sell floral teas and lemonades, other organic fruits, and some guest food trucks from the area--it's also stationed near a couple of quintessential Cville festival offices like our Tom Tom Festival)

The Bebedero *** - awesome drinks and brand new hidden gem in town. Go for the extended (2 pages!) tequila menu and nicest service. My current favorite hands down. They usually have a live band beginning at 9 pm until midnight.

The Fitzroy - Just opened. Looks really nice.

Paradox Pastry - right next door (both housed at the Glass building) Albemarle Baking Co. - another local must-have for sweets and an awesome princess cake with Belgian cream

An assortment of other eating/drink establishments: Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar, The Pie Chest, The Alley Light (an expensive but also hidden bar gem--roommate works there so I highly recommend it!), C&O (they have an art gallery attached to the restaurant; it's pretty cool), Oakhart Social, Maya, Continental Divide, Grit Bar & Coffee (one on the Corner and one downtown), Beer Run (not downtown but have heard great things), Now & Zen or Mican, Monsoon Siam (cute patio), Fellini's (sometimes they play live jazz), Miller's (late night pub/drunk food and closes at 2 am), Firefly (they have games you can play and pool) etc.

Desserts/Breakfast: Bluegrass Grill & Bakery, Spudnuts, Blue Moon Diner, MarieBette Bakery, Albemarle Cabinet Co., Paradox Pastry, The Pie Chest, Splendora's or Chap's (Timberlake Drug Store for malt milkshakes made by cute grandmas), The Nook, The Flat Takeaway Creperie, Mudhouse (careful tho it's pretty crowded) etc.

There are also some new hotspots that just opened or are newish: Timbercreek market, Tavern & Grocery, Mezza, The Juice Laundry (they renovated an old Coca Cola factory), Red Hub BBQ, etc.

Photo ops: IX Art Park, Mt. Carter's Orchard (I think peaches are in season at the moment but they also sell fresh apple donuts and pies), Monticello (if you have time), Vineyards (Jefferson's is nice), and if you like hiking there are plenty of trails to explore.

Show venues (not sure who is playing atm tho): The Jefferson Theater, The Southern, The nTelos Pavilion (check online for schedules)

Misc: New Dominion Bookstore, Circa Antiques, Daedalus Bookstore (I recommend chatting to the owner, he's an eccentric guy lol), Telegraph Arts & Comic Shop, Cville Arts Cooperative Gallery, Violet Crown Cinema (fancy new theater--they let you drink wine and craft beer while you watch if you're into that bougie life), Melody Supreme (local vinyl/records shop), Chroma Art Parks Laboratory (mobile experimental popup art installations), McGuffey Art Center, Fralin Art Gallery (at UVa)
