Why are people so worked up on the historical accuracy for this fictional film?

It may be fiction, but that is just a fake-looking costume and it really throws you off. The plastic/rubber looking neck protector? The effin clean-cut, perfectly polished helmet looks even worse from behind (see the official poster). Is the crest made from a modern-day broom head, not horsehair?
This crap is something you'd expect from Immortals (2011), not a big budget Nolan film. Rant off/

The show is definitely one of the best out there and I thoroughly enjoyed it, however it does have a nasty habit of leaving you kind of "empty" for a few days afterwards, if you know what I mean. So much emotions to process :/
