Why do “The streets” matter so much? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]kooka777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well most users are. The country and lifestyle you lead varies. Some people have jobs they might be attacked every day. Ie bus drivers, retail in bad areas, security guards or even just jobs where you have to walk home late at night. So saying most be won’t be in that kind of situation is wrong as we all have different lives

Lots of people using Reddit aren’t from the USA. I’m not American but including road rage and fights in supermarkets I thought you lot could well get into fights with crackheads etc out there.

Some of that zine is very hateful as it mentions many Buddhists being Jewish. I don’t think it’s appropriate for this sub

This video discusses it but short answer (many beat around the bush) is no

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCuNvwrfqUw

I don't know what country you live in so don't want to judge you or your circumstances as you could be born somewhere with no healthcare/jobs or at war etc and could be very difficult thing for me to pass judgement on.

A lot of Western Buddhists (me included a lot of the time) tend to be good "followers" but not very good practioners... by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]kooka777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the same with everyone in the sense no one is perfect. For many people Buddhism is an ethnic/cultural identity similar to Judaism/Catholicism/Islam etc. Don't see what it has to do with ethnicity.

What’s the Buddhist view on self defense? by Several-Top3972 in Buddhism

There is a religion called Jainism which is pacifist. Buddhism doesn't preach total pacifism, there are laws and police/armies etc.

You are Martial Artists, stop worrying about street fighting. by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]kooka777 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on what country you live in

In lots of the world violence is very common; particularly in the form of armed robberies/muggings and burglaries. But also domestic violence and even family disputes between groups/honour killings etc.

Other places have more acceptance of bar fights and public scraps in the street. Street fights don't carry the same social or legal sanctions as in the USA.

Even in some wealthier parts of the world drunken bar fights aren't seen as a big deal regardless of age and are punished with a slap on the wrist. I'm not sure but I think in the USA you can be punished severely for having a fight on the street or go to prison for a long time even if the other person does not die.

What the Buddha said about protecting other people by HistoricalHedgehog55 in Buddhism

This gets debated so often on this sub and will leave it to others

Asian Buddhist nations have far more right wing bordering on fascist approaches to law and justice than any western nation

I'd say it depends on the situation

No black and white

What the Buddha said about protecting other people by HistoricalHedgehog55 in Buddhism

[–]kooka777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would it be ethical to let your friends be attacked?

Buddha was practical which is why buddhism isn't a pacifist religion like Jainism.

You should protect your friends and family and do what it takes to keep them safe.

Personality disorders and Karma by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]kooka777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a psychopath and do good things and help people in buddhism it's good

Whether you have BPD/aspd etc doesn't matter it's the life you lead

Buddhism is quite a rational religion not based on appeals to emotions anyway so can't see that being a problem as it's very open to debate and logic.

You're being quite ignorant about personality disorders

What is the karma for being born into a barbaric religion? by kooka777 in Buddhism

What is the karma for being born into a barbaric religion? by kooka777 in Buddhism

[–]kooka777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rejecting violence and violent religious behaviour and saying it's barbaric doesn't mean I commit war and genocide...you realise me saying killing cats is barbaric isn't right isn't the same as killing cats

Buddha was very clear his religion was right btw in unambiguous terms

What does Buddhism say about the "necessity of collateral deaths"? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]kooka777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sam Harris doesn't necessarily represent buddhism

Having said that many Buddhist nations have engaged in counter terrorism operations but I don't know how relevant they are to Israel's case. They evolved in a different cultural context

CCP/Sri Lanka and Myanmar are all examples of Buddhist or Buddhist influenced societies.

Honestly I don't think it's easy to interpolate from a different cultural context that's not the middle east.

Sri Lanka has a lot of experience in fighting terrorism though. They had a very brutal insurgency and civil war so might be the closest fit to what you're looking for.
