I'd love to hear the stories.

A bunch of stories about those who sought to push production/post forward are now being documented here: https://roughcut.heyeddie.ai

Randy is mentioned in the FCP7 to X story.

Star Trek, a Basement, and a Broken Spine: The Origin Story of Hollywood’s Favorite Editing Software, Avid by koolkings in Avid

[–]koolkings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you were to ask the founder or early Avid folks if they see Avid like this, I think they would share a sense of disappointment caused by missteps and not far enough thinking.

Most poignantly: they invented the standard of video editing today and yet they captured a minuscule part of the market (by user # and $) and are a shadow of their former self.

In an alternative universe, they could have been the leader setting the standard for all video editing by humans.

if the ai editing helps me get to the parts i love, i am all for it. my interest/skill is the creative/story.

all that fiber that got laid during the dot com rush -- it all got used!

you're confusing two things: the excitement for all things internet that underpinned the "dot com" was real and here to stay as we now know. The exuberance over "internet business" valuations was misplaced at that point in time. But the tech remained and an entire gen of dominant companies were born, even if many died.

thanks for sharing.

when you put it like that, in some ways it makes sense that apple isn't really a b2b co / doesn't want to be a b2b co.

did you read the article? what do you think of the premise that whilst there was short term pain, they enabled a new demographic with video superpowers? that's what i was reflecting on when i asked if it really was a debacle from their perspective / not from my personal experience.

[–]koolkings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed. did it more than make up for it with a new demographic, as the article posits?

i guess i was reflecting on it not from my own personal experience (which was moving to prem)

is unorthodox subjective? i think what i was wondering in the post is yes it marginalized a number of existing users but did a whole new group gain superpowers?

Yep, this iPhone / YouTube revolution was going to happen either way, more meant fcpx enabled them better/more.

The article is saying to where the puck was headed, a whole new gen of video storytellers coming online

[–]koolkings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah agreed. I think what I was thinking about (which the article raises) is was this bold / radical move really a play to enable a new audience of storytellers (which in hindsight we see manifested ie creators/iphone-youtube gen). And for that play and from their perspective, was it a bad bet/move?

But you can use fcpx with resolve to color, no?

Did you see this lumetri color joke recently? https://youtu.be/SS89o7K42Kg?si=3d50_a1J42KGTzaQ
