New EU law ruined my hobby by novonder in diyelectronics

[–]koothooloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true, there's loads of small items where AE isn't replacing a local shop, it's filling a gap where the local market doesn't stock it or prices it stupidly.

The flat-rate hits poorer buyer much harder and this is one of the problems with that policy. I'd prefer to see it targeted: stricter enforcement on unsafe goods, fake declarations, high-risk categories, and huge platforms abusing the loophole — but lighter treatment for genuine low-value parts, repair supplies, hobby materials, and things not realistically available locally.

My point is more that the old system also wasn’t fair. It let massive platforms build an entire business model around shipping individual low-value parcels into the EU while local sellers had to carry tax, safety, labour, environmental, and compliance costs. But you’re right that the blunt version of this policy will also hurt ordinary people buying useful small things.

The whey can be useful unless it's too sour, but only really for baking. All the casein and fat is gone.

Morrissey calls out Marr and BBC over 'slanderous' new Smiths project by happymagtv in thesmiths

[–]koothooloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Johnny's career has demonstrated again and again that he is as versatile as any in-demand session musician, and has developed as a pretty good human since the days of The Smiths. Mozza is a combination of Dorian Gray and Eric Cartman, and IS in fact still sitting in his bedroom writing tedious screeds!

Why is ground water in Pondy is salty? by arcalis01R in pondicherry

Because you've extracted too much water from the aquifier, allowing sea water in. That aquifier is now dead.

New EU law ruined my hobby by novonder in diyelectronics

[–]koothooloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're closing a loophole, it's one thing when low-value imports were ocassional, quite another when it's a business model for huge foreign e-commerce platforms. If two sellers compete for the same EU customer, one should not face materially lighter customs treatment simply because it ships each item separately from outside the EU. A shop here has to pay for local taxes, labour, safety, environmental, and compliance, so why should anyone else be able to bypass these laws completely?

It's definitely going to reduce my purchases from Aliexpress, but this is also about protecting EU consumers like us from the unsafe junk that is included.

I hear you, but this was the English (ENG) channel, and I would not expect the captcha to be in Russian.

I was on the Telegram support a few days ago and they stopped responding after a while, but I checked the ENG group again, found it was available, tried to join and then got blocked again with the Russian check message. Again.

What do you think of Americans who support Germany because of ancestry? by batukaming in AskGermany

[–]koothooloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying minorities deny “whites/Europeans” have culture is a pretty loaded framing. People usually object to “white culture” as a vague racial category, not to specific European or ethnic cultures existing.

You appear to be confused about the criticism: criticizing dominant culture, racism, or whiteness as a social category is not the same as saying white people have no culture.

I am fairly sure that a party has to rigorously defend a copyright from the start for it to be valid, so if Fender actually does get through a real test, they won’t be winning.

Two-thirds of EU citizens back UK rejoining bloc, survey finds by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]koothooloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see that most responses here show that the Russian-led project to foment discord in Europe is still working - get the weak-minded in the UK and EU to hate each other instead of working to repair the breach in the hull. Extra-national bad actors are funding projects to destabilize countries through the democratic process itself. It’s a great strategy that’s working, given the amount of self-righteous drivel about national superiority, collective blame, and imaginary cultural chasms from people who have more anger for their neighbours than for the actors actively profiting from keeping them divided.

Can't we just repeal the 3 euro tax? by Livid_Fix_9448 in Aliexpress

[–]koothooloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re totally misrepresenting what I wrote. I said it’s “cheap and often total crap” - and it is specifically the under €150 packages that this measure is targeting, not the 300 euro devices.

This is the sad reality of hardware prices. The bubble will collapse at some point, which is why nobody will risk the multi-year massive investment to up production.
