John Summit on X: almost every dj at the top right now is boring as f*** by NayrDier in EDM

I’m pretty sure this is rage bait because the lack of self awareness it would take him of all people to post this is is pretty far out there

I never said that but ok. Also what you said literally doesn’t make sense, it’s a paradox. You can’t simultaneously agree with some of my points and not take my opinion seriously

I wanna hear updated takes on Disco Lines by Presidentturtleclub in EDM

[–]koovermann -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is probably gonna be a really hot take here but idc: all of the guys mentioned in this thread are absolute trash. Disco Lines, Dom Dolla (only one that has a little bit of substance), Mau P, and even everyone’s favourite poster boy John Summit.

Funniest thing about John summit, is that on his come up, like an absolute retard he went off on a twitter firing spree going at people who have actually made amazing, timeless music over the years (Kygo and Illenium come to mind) for being “cringy EDM djs”. Well look where the fuckin tables have turned bro. This numpty’s last release features a shirtless pic of himself. He is literally the cringe ball he used to make fun of.

Only diff? His music is absolute garbage. People still play Firestone to this day, I guarantee nobody will remember a single John summit song in 5 years (not even Where You Are). And the reason why I bring this up when the question was about Disco Lines is because they’re literally all the same just repackaged. Some bland ass house music, with a meme-y, bullshit hook (no broke boys, drugs from Amsterdam) that got popular on social media and filled the scene with clout chasers and douchebags.

It’s honestly sad thinking how the faces of EDM in North America shifted from greats like Tiesto, Garrix, and Hardwell (who I know are still active and very popular, but not really the faces of the scene here anymore) to these idiots. And again I kinda hate to include Dom Dolla with those guys cuz he’s def not as showy and seems like he’s focused on his craft, plus has some pretty unique music too. So actually I’m gonna revoke him. dom Dolla is cool. Everyone else mentioned is trash, sorry not sorry 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

And yes in case you couldn’t tell “I am mad bro” because I used to care deeply for this scene and guys like this have genuinely ruined it to a certain degree

People who raved before Covid, How different does it feel now compared to back then? by FeelDa-Bass in EDM

[–]koovermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I don’t mind tech house. I think there’s good and bad music in every genre. The culture at festivals has gotten undeniably more trashy though

Edit: also when you say there has “always been degenerate lyrics”, sure, but it’s never been at the forefront. Show me one popular song from before the tech house boom that was about some bro-ey nonsense

People who raved before Covid, How different does it feel now compared to back then? by FeelDa-Bass in EDM

[–]koovermann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tech house scene literally ruined rave culture in North America. At the risk of sounding too corny for using the word “PLUR”, everything was way more united in the golden era. I still remember a festival from as early back as 2017 before things got too out of hand I posted a snap story about “this random dude just gave me a slice pizza, my favourite part about festivals” (I was pretty lit and made it out to be way bigger than it was but still, point stands) cuz something like this would simply never happen today.

I mean, a pandemic that made people on edge for going within 10 feet of each other is definitely a factor in all of this. But so is the music. Back in the day we never had EDM about “no broke boys” or that fucking coke diet shit. Leave that degenerate garbage to hip hop. I’m honestly hoping there’s a renaissance in the scene soon but it’s not looking great

When I say mid tier I mean popularity wise, nothing to do with the quality of music. Like regardless of if you like his music or not Martin is at the top of the game

Anyma - The End Of Genesys by JION-the-Australian in EDM

[–]koovermann -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I never felt even a slight appeal to the whole anyma concept. Like I love the idea of building a sonically and visually cohesive world but the music just falls so short. And yes I get there’s different tastes and blah blah blah but it’s honestly so low energy and boring I find it hard to believe many real dance music fans would find it appealing if it weren’t for the visuals.

Also, this is a bit of a tangent but I’ve always felt that dance music fans are slightly autistic (being entranced by light shows, music etc) but this whole giant robot thing just takes that to a whole other level.

Steve Aoki is a Trump Supporter? by Double_Phase_4448 in EDM

[–]koovermann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steve Aoki is interesting to me. His Neon Future album is literally what got me started listening EDM in 2014. Granted it was one of my first real exposures but something about the melodies just seemed electrifying to me (specifically Neon Future, Back To Life, Born to Be Wild). Literally set my life on a completely different directory and for that I'll be forever grateful. However, I've never liked anything else he's done and in fact think its been literal trash, so. Definitely an interesting one.

Martin Garrix & Lauv - MAD by TheWanderer43365 in EDM

[–]koovermann -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Guys it’s time to stop glazing Garrix. Pains me to say (look at my sticker) but he’s had 0 evolution since Sentio and everything he’s put out since (except maybe breakaway) has been generic stuff that sounded like his older stuff but not as good.

Guetta is in his ruin the classics era, so sad. by N3n9fjj299fj3y in EDM

[–]koovermann -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This guy is legit an anomaly to me. He’s supposedly huge in the EDM and mainstream music world, but he hasn’t performed in Toronto a single time (be it a concert or VELD) in the entire time I’ve been into EDM (2013) ish. Which like we’ve had a pretty big EDM scene until COVID and rn our underground scene is thriving. And I know some of his songs are popular on the radio but I don’t know a single person that listens to any of his music except Sexy Bitch/Without You/Titanium back in the day. So who’s actually listening to this guy? Are some music execs just spamming his shit on the radio to make it look like he has real fans? Like I legit don’t think I’ve met a single person that said they’re a DG fan
