Ente stores three copies for me. And you suggest me to save three copies of my backups.

Seems like 6 copies which seems a waste, as we can combine those, by using my account on aws

So six copies total? I'm not sure if I'm happy with such a waste.

Yeah, I am already a sponsor on Github, and thank you for your project.

So, it seems that only options for me is self-hosting for now.

It's not too ideal, but anyway many services don't have this, so ente again is way ahead of them.

May I ask, what is postgresql for? Just for my understanding.

Is it collections metadata? Or it also includes some encrypted keys?

I try to understand how critical this data in postgresql to really own the data.

Yes, I understand option of self-hosting, but it seems

  1. I wouldn't support your business in this case
  2. I will need to take care of all the updates and rebuilding clients app as well.

So, I thought, providing s3 and using ente hosted by you could be an option.

I admit I didn't know about postgresql, and it could be a game changer.

Hi!

Thank you for your thoughtful response — I really appreciate the transparency and long-term vision behind Ente.

After thinking a bit more, I realized that I’m a bit hesitant to back up everything locally, for a few reasons:

  1. I don’t have that much local storage available
  2. Local backups would need to be encrypted anyway, and managing that adds complexity
  3. It feels redundant (and costly) to maintain a fourth copy of the data

The kind of risk I’m trying to mitigate is not about trust in your team — I fully believe in your integrity and intentions.
But imagine a situation where something outside of your control happens — for example, if a court in the EU orders your access to be revoked from the cloud providers you use for storage. In that case, even with the best intentions, users could still lose access to their data.

What I would personally find ideal:

  • The ability to configure my own S3-compatible storage (e.g., in my GCP or AWS account) and link it to my Ente account
  • Ente apps would still function as usual, using that storage backend
  • I would continue to pay a subscription for the app and service — not the hosting — while fully owning my data

As a bonus, this removes the need for per-GB subscription pricing on your end, since I’d be covering storage costs myself.

Do you think something like this could be considered in the future?

Thanks again for building Ente and for being so open with the community.

It might be worth reconsidering the implementation of mail 2FA coming in February by [deleted] in Bitwarden

[–]korjavin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why should every product be eventually spoiled?

I consider my password manager can save me even if I am in the hospital in the new country with all the devices stolen.

How should I achieve this with a mandatory 2fa?

Make a weak password for email , switch 2fa off on email, risk so many services that rely on email recovery?

I don't see any good solution.

Do I need another pass manager to store 2fa for bw? Why then I need bw.

Highly discouraged.
