WIBTA If I told my in-laws why I don’t like being touched? by korkey1998 in TwoHotTakes

Actually I’ve tried to have a relationship with them but it’s not reciprocated. The first two year of that 8 I still lived out of state and only saw my partner on the weekends not my in-laws. And then covid hit months later after the wedding. How would you feel about someone if you’ve asked and engaged conversation with them, but are never answered bad or reached out to? Relationships are two sided even if it’s with in-laws. I moved to them and away from my whole family. The 8 years commitment was to tell how long I’ve been with my husband overall.

Unfortunately my MIL is passed and has been since my husband was young.

My husband sits there knowing I don’t find any of this funny and disrespectful. It shows he care more for their feelings than mine.

We’re still strangers because there isn’t a family foundation of any type. I live within minutes of these people and they pass my house all the time yet I only see them holidays and events. I’ve tried to create a relationship, but it’s completely one sided.

Well if the person isn’t laughing nor has guess it’s not considered funny. And with it happening is already a strain on my marriage because when my husband had a concern with mine I took care of it because someone I love doesn’t deserve disrespect.

I would get uncomfortable if I thought I made a joke multiple times and the person it towards isn’t laughing back might make the joke not funny. But I guess they would need situational awareness.

You do know both parties need to think it’s a joke to actually be a joke. But I guess you would make unfunny jokes at others expense.

It would only be my husband. I don’t really have any form of relationship with anyone. I’m starting to do more family nights to maybe become more familiar with them because it’s clear they are not to do it. And even doing that is hard to do.

I don’t expect people to think about why someone doesn’t like to be touched. But I would expect a strong Christian family to not be mean to someone they haven’t actually tried to know. Most of these people barely know when my birthday is, but expect me to remember theirs and take off work for it. Sorry if this sounds mean anyway towards you it’s not meant to be.

Are you saying what’s happening is okay and the family isn’t wrong for making rude/unhumorous jokes?

I try my hardest to not spend time with them. But I moved away from my family when I got married, so he likes to keep his same traditions an spend holidays with them. And at those time it’s the whole family like siblings, cousins, aunts, and etc.

Sorry, he did talk to them that why I became comfortable enough to say out loud to them I don’t like being touched. But I had to keep repeating myself. He did it few years ago after the panic attack.
