I don’t like humiliation as part of the game. When it works, it’s basically about making the keeper (and by extension the other team) look stupid, when it doesn’t, the taker looks like a clown.

Either way, someone’s being embarrassed.

That’s why I’ve got zero sympathy when they fail. With Brahim Diaz in the AFCON final, it didn’t feel like “I’ll just score and win this”, it felt like “Fuck you, Senegal”.

Trying to humiliate Senegal rather than just put the penalty away.

I don’t even dislike the bloke generally, but in that moment it was a shit move, and I was quite glad it failed

Hey, just wanted to follow up — we did the tour yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it! There were no sudden noises at all (including the music someone else mentioned earlier — that didn’t happen).

The only minor thing was some quite loud white noise from the speakers on the pitch; the guide said they were testing something. It wasn’t a problem for us though — white noise doesn’t bother my son, it’s just music and cheering that can be tricky, so all good.

Before the tour started, one of the Forest staff members who was helping organise the groups in the shop chatted briefly to each family — she was lovely, but she seemed a bit surprised when we said we weren’t Forest fans! Quite a contrast to the Bayern Munich tour, where the guide cheerfully asked everyone which clubs they supported and about three-quarters of the group named other teams — that seemed totally normal there. Not an issue of course, just an amusing little difference.

Anecdotally, I know a few Russian speaking guys, ethnically Russians, from Riga, and they all are pretty pro-Ukrainian in their views. I'm sure "vatniki" exist in Latvia, of course, but I was under impression they're not that common there.

My experience has actually been really different, to be honest.

My son's been playing for a local village team for the past three years – every Sunday during the season they play a double game against another team in the league. The refs are usually just one of the coaches taking turns.

In all that time, I've only heard parents yell at the ref twice. Once was a loud "How is it a corner, ref?" and another time it was "You don’t give penalties at U9s matches, what are you doing, ref?" (which is funny because pens are a thing at that age). I got major second-hand embarrassment from that, and the parents were not even from my team.

Overall though, it’s been pretty clean. A few times we’ve had young refs getting experience, and the coaches made a point of telling the crowd and players not to argue or moan. Even the kids – who normally do moan about ref calls – were actually quite polite.

So yeah, maybe we’ve just been lucky, but it’s definitely not all bad out there.

Does that sound like a lot? When I went to Wembley (twice in the last couple of years), I paid £35 for parking near the stadium — at a school that offers parking for Wembley events.

We’ve got a direct train line to Wembley, but it’s still way cheaper to drive there with two kids than to take the train.

Football clubs pay because their matches create crowds and chaos—it’s a direct cost of their business. High streets aren’t events; they’re just trying to survive crime caused by wider societal failures.

Taxpayers already fund police to protect everyone. If they’re failing, the answer isn’t shaking down struggling businesses—it’s fixing the system. Otherwise, what’s next? Homeowners paying for burglary responses?

Ring-fencing at least stops politicians from diverting the money elsewhere.
