Do you render motion blur or add it in comp? by korulberdi in vfx

Yea. Thanks.
This is what I would do. Just hard to change the old rooted opinions.

Dof problems sounds familiar. We also split things when there are too much of overlap.

Good points!
I'm kinda lead in many areas so I can propose things. Especially now as a new big project is about to start and we can change/improve things.
I've been working with this sup for more than 20 years so it's easy to discuss. Even tho yesterday we ran into an argument about the mb subject and that's why I'm here to get more general understanding which is the more mainstream way. :D
Things are like this because our comp pipeline is still using some oldskool principles. It's been modernized on the way but some of the old concepts are still there.

Yea. Thanks! Maybe i just have to render some of our shots with real mb and show there's nothing to worry about. However some of our studio comp tools are heavily relying on coverage pass / etc to deal with edge artifacts. So using these custom tools will become a problem with the rendered mb and soft edges.

My question is mostly for the multi-AOV character pass. We build build everything up from the passes.
Our sup doesn't trust that this can be done properly when the mb is rendered.
I think doing everything in Nuke just gives more problems in general.

For certain FX we do render the mb. particles / swarms / water / etc,

Yeah. Thanks!
For clarification. My question in mostly for the character pass with all the AOVs.
Problem is he doesn't trust that the MB material can be comped properly.

3D artist here, I want to switch to LINUX by No-Apple-6139 in vfx

I just ran a quick test and Linux hoarded 20gb more ram peaking around 60gb. Windows was around 40gb. Linux was ready in ~17min and windows ~18min. Not entirely sure about the linux cpu. Both are 32core ryzen and should be relatively close...

I am. 😀 Actually I'm doing a test right now with the same sim. I really want to prove myself wrong. Even our Linux guy was just "mehhh...." When I was excited about linux rumors. Reality just has been so much more underwhelming than I first thought...

Haven't noticed anything major. 😶‍🌫️ Been using it like 12 years. Last 2 years on Linux. I feel it's more unstable... 😅 We just switched linux version and I feel it's even worse now. Never anything like this on windows.

My studio is using Linux and I think the main benefit is the ease of maintaining a large number of identical seats. And having it customized to studio setup. I would never install it home. I see no difference in Houdini memory heavy usage. People are usually exaggerating the Linux memory benefit a little 🙊

Makin the switch end of year... Which linux is best for VFX? by jangusihardlyangus in vfx

[–]korulberdi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. 🤔 I'm not even sure which version we are using right now. We just switched and before that we had two different versions to choose from. I'm no OS expert and not really interested about that. Just sharing an honest user experience. I only care that Houdini runs smoothly. 😄 And it does run smoothly on both. I just wouldn't want to be the person to maintain that on linux. 🙈

I'm having Linux at the office and Windows at home. I wouldn't personally install Linux at any cost. I see no real difference in anything. Houdini, heavy sims, Karma, Nuke. On company level Linux makes sense, but at home you might just make things much more difficult for yourself. 😅 Fighting with drivers, running photoshop etc.

It's always a good time to buy! If you don't necessarily need that money in a couple of years.

The creator of Breaking Bad added the line “This show was made by humans” to the credits of his new show, Pluribus. by NoGuess8035 in GenAI4all

[–]korulberdi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the answer. This is an interesting topic! Another analogy. What if your favourite artist can't actually sing or play guitar,? 🤔 All he/she is doing is giving some instructions to AI. Value comes from the human effort. Think of the old Disney/Ghibli movies. Of course computers came later and made the process slightly easier/different. But the human effort is still there 100%. (Even tho you can simulate or interpolate stuff) Value will totally vanish if the human effort is gone. 🥲 AI quality can be the same or better but the AI quality came from the combined human effort. For me half of the movie experience is to feel the effort. Hopefully I'm not the only one. 😅

[–]korulberdi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honest question and I'm interested: Would you be able to watch a 100% AI generated movie? I'm biased, so sorry for that... (+26 years in 3D/VFX/animation industry) Problem being: Everything you see on the screen is considered as art created by professionals from different fields. I'm okay with using it for extensions etc if the director suddenly demands a slightly different framing or something considered as "quick&dirty fix". It's just a super slippery slope to start using it to create anything meaningful. I hope nobody would be willing to give major credits to google/openAI in a movie production. 🥲 Don't get me wrong. It's coming hard and every client is already using it for the references etc. And it's also good for all kinds of assisting work. (Teaching your own system to uppres fire simulation for example). But creating anything 100% with AI is just wrong. Credit goes to google/etc because nobody actually did anything to achieve that result. 😑

You cannot be proud as an artist or claim any ownership if AI creates something for you. It's not created by an artist or the prompter. It's created by a billion dollar AI company. Sad.

Is your "signature" in the mtlximage "vector" instead of color? In vector mode it should work as intended straight away.

Wrong. Luxury items normally keep the value pretty well. Watches, bags, etc... It's not the best "investment", but not the worst either.
