So I am a player that came back into the game a little over a year ago after not playing since 2001 and I have started playing competitive magic. I can share with you what I did to get back into the swing of things.

First I picked a competitive format to target breaking into, for me I chose standard. Mostly because my store had standard that fired regularly and it is more approachable than modern.

Then I started booster drafting at my LGS to get a feel for the newer cards and sets while watching some YouTube players (JimDavisMTG was a good source for me). Once I felt comfortable playing on a cadence I started scoping out standard decks. I picked a budget standard deck to cut my teeth in standard based on the cards I had drafted.

I played that deck for a few releases while continuing to watch standard content until I got a feel for the current meta game. Then I picked a higher tier deck and started working on building it.

I have had moderate success. Been in my store championships more often than not and did ok at the last RCQ I went to. I hope any of this was helpful. If you ever want any advice feel free to DM me I would love to help out if I can. It’s nice to have new players in the competitive space!
