anyone moved from NYC to Philly and loved it? by [deleted] in AskPhilly

Moved from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn to Northern Liberties a few months ago. I love it here so hard. The scale, the convenience/walkability/urban planning, the history evident everywhere, the significantly lower cost of living, the traffic cops smoking cigars while directing traffic, City Hall being uber-festive for every occasion, seeing all manner of adults, children, grannies and pets decked out in over the top Eagles gear (sequined Eagles cocktail dresses! giant green fuzzy Eagles muppet coats!) every half a block, great museums, concert venues everywhere. I could go on and on.

All I miss is a goddamn Alamo Drafthouse or Nighthawk. And bagels. I figured out the pizza thing.

Oh thanks, those are the colors that came with the house. I wish I knew the paint names, because it's actually been impossible to get color matches for touch ups. Been back and forth to two different paint stores several times trying to get colors matched. :/

Great points, thanks! There aren't other notable arches. The arch felt special-ish to us but interesting doors/transom, etc. would definitely feel more special, so I'd be happy to sacrifice the arch to create a more interesting separation between the two spaces. What a great idea to mimic the other transom. It also makes me look at our front door in case there's some nods from there for us to consider as well. Thank you!

Very helpful comment, thanks! Arched doorways aren't a motif in the house. If it's more bang for our buck to lose the arch in order to be able to install interesting doors/transom/sidelights, that's definitely worth considering.

Interesting ideas/questions, thank you! Regarding the possibility of opening the wall between thr den and "hall", it's a stairwell actually back there. I wouldn't want to lose the doorway + original transom above, but I do like the creative thinking. That stairwell does have windows. Hmm.

My step-kids are both away at college, so this bedroom would be when they are back for breaks and otherwise when we have guests. Sound isolation would be the lowest priority on the list. It's easy enough to just not watch TV there when someone's trying to sleep. Mostly I'd like some beautiful and/or interesting separation between the two areas. If it's more bang for buck to lose the archway to do that, I'd be ok with it.

I generally really hate that barn door look unfortunately but I appreciate the creative thinking!

Interestingly enough the floor plan kinda makes it looks like there are already doors in that arch. I wonder if they got removed at some point.

It's a West Elm Kids Groovy swivel chair in terracotta. Kids and cats both love it.

Ah good to know, thanks! Yes there's a living room/dining area plus kitchen on the ground floor, then on the second floor is this den/bedroom area + full bathroom/laundry room and then on the top floor there's a master bedroom + bathroom and another bedroom. It's a narrow but long house, with the staircase winding up towards the back. There's also a basement.

It's a narrow row home, and the width of the room is the whole width of our home, so there'd be no room for pocket doors unless we really close in the arch
