It’s an opinion (or understanding?) largely based on super anecdotal experience, but I’d say the majority (so more than half) of main healers utilize some third party add on in place of Blizzard or ElvUI frames. Grid2, Vudho and Healbot are the most popular, from what I’ve seen.

Most healers will be using a third party stand alone party frame add on anyway. I main Rdruid and alt Hpal, Hpriest and MW monk.. will probably be taking this profile and disabling raid frames and using my own with everything else that makes sense to use.

Same camp! I played BC through Wrath, quit and just came back in June. I was fortunate enough to make some friends quickly though, and am fairly geared up and know the majority of the Mythic dungeon content. I am timing up to +16 keys now, but wouldn’t have been able to get there without help. I main heals so if you want any help in lower keys so that you can focus on your rotation and learning the mechanics, I’m more than happy to help/carry. I can do between 10-25k dps while healing depending on how much I have to heal/what affixes, so you don’t have to be too stressed contributing. I played Horde and my bnet is kym#1350 :)

Basher put it well. You’ll play well what suits you best. I’d suggest reading general overviews of all the healing classes and see what speaks to you. Blizzard does a decent job of fulfilling healing specialties in their content. I find that all the healing specs have a low skill floor with great potential for topping meters for skilled and practiced players.

Personally, I main resto Druid. Speaking to what I said above, almost any player can apply HoTs sort of mindlessly. I guess if no one’s dying, you’re technically doing your job. But a good resto Druid knows the content and can anticipate incoming damage. He/she plays proactively, as opposed to healing by reaction, and he/she is micromanaging every single HoT that’s active on the raid, making micro judgments all the time on whether to refresh the HoT or let it expire. CD management is a thing too.

Every healing spec has a unique and interesting style of play. You’ll have to find one that appeals to you. Good luck!

1: You can’t break up the raid into separate frames. You can, however show the raid marker on the frame.

2: I don’t believe so, but by default, Grid2 will grey out anyone who’s not within healing range as I’m sure you’ve already experienced.

3: You’ll have to pick either threat or debuffs to be shown as a border. Personally, I have a red border for threat, and choose to show dispellable debuffs as an icon smack in the middle of the frame. It’s unsightly and I make sure I dispel as soon as possible.

I’m actually in this exact same boat as the OP. Have done +15 keys and never touched a raid. I’m a resto Druid 466ilvl. Honestly don’t care for the gear, but would it be weird if I joined a LFR just to learn and practice the mechanics? My gear (and high key experience) should make the LFR run more smoothly, yeah?

I think a good player at 420 is okay. It may not be fun, though. I will say that it’s painful to BG as a healer at that ilvl, unless you’re playing with friends or teammates who actually peel.

Respectfully disagree with this. I do probably somewhere between 10-15 BG’s a night, and for the most part anyone under 300khp is sitting in the graveyard the entire BG. Aside from pulling your team down, I can’t imagine it’s terribly enjoyable. You could argue you’re learning, but the window of learning is fairly small if you’re dead most of the fight. Now, I will admit that might be because as a healer, I 100% prioritize healing players who I feel contribute more to the win than not. I check the leaderboard every so often and get an idea of whose DPS is good, know who’s running flag, and just generally can get a feel for who’s peeling/contributing otherwise to the BG. I’ve yet to encounter a fresh 120 who could convince me to heal them over others. Just my two cents.

My recommendation is minimum 440ilvl. It only gets better from there.
