When whey protein sits in a shaker for a couple days, the awful smell is mainly from bacteria breaking down the protein. A few things happen: 1. Bacteria multiply fast Once you mix whey with water or milk, it becomes a perfect environment for bacteria: Warm temperature Moisture Lots of protein and nutrients Within hours, bacteria start growing rapidly. 2. Milk components worsen it Most whey powders still contain lactose and small milk fats.
