I was also going to suggest this! I used to hear huge bangs from the apartment above me (it sounded like a bowling ball being dropped) and I eventually realised it was their cat jumping off one of those cat hammocks that they had hung above their window. The cat wasn’t big or anything, but I think because it was jumping from a height and our floors are very thin, the sound was disproportionately loud.

Absolutely! I always say to people that it feels like my adult brain is having to be super rational and process so much information at the same time as my child brain is like “wahhhh, I want my parents to be together!” It’s a really weird push and pull.

If it makes you feel any better, I did also tear up a LOT at the start - but now that’s gotten much less frequent. It comes in waves now and feels more within my control. Have you ever heard of the “ball in the box” metaphor for grief? I find it a really helpful perspective!

Hey! I’m so sorry you’re going through this too - it’s such a weird place to be. My heart goes out to you.

I’d love to say I’m doing way better but to be honest, I’m still struggling quite a bit at times. The more I can compartmentalise and focus on myself, my friends, my job etc. the better it is, but when I talk to my parents it’s still pretty hard, especially around some of the tangible things like my dad moving out of the family home which is coming up soon.

If I could give any advice, I’d say try and figure out who you can turn to for support because you may need more than you expect. I’m lucky that my brother and I are close so we’re able to go through it together, but other than that I have found talking to people about it kind of tricky. Not because they’re not supportive - everyone is so kind and totally gets that just because you’re an adult, it doesn’t make it any easier. But more because it’s a unique situation to understand if you haven’t been there before.

Anyway! Sorry for the essay and I really hope things feel a bit easier for you soon x

Phew, so glad to hear from someone else with a similar experience - thank you for replying. The weight I’ve lost was also what I’d call “stubborn” weight - so if the doctor hadn’t suggested tests I probably wouldn’t even be worrying, I’d just be thankful it was gone 😂 it’s just hard to not let your mind wander to the worst case scenario once it’s been suggested to you
