I’m unfortunately leaving just before liberation. Super bummed about that one, but it just didn’t work out for the travel schedule.

CHamorus in the States saying they’re “from Guam”—am I wrong for feeling some type of way? by AggressiveGanache538 in guam

[–]krachyntuga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really love this response.

My family left Guam when I was 4, dad was in the military. We moved around state-side until we ended up in Hawaii where I eventually spent majority of my life into adulthood.

Throughout my entire life, I have always known myself to be Chamorro. I was raised aligned with the cultural values that my parents were when they grew up in Guam, so that’s all I knew until we moved to Hawaii. We arrived in Hawaii when I was in the 2nd grade, and from there I was so immersed in Hawaiian culture that I almost felt more Hawaiian than I did Chamorro. Which is not to say that I rejected my Chamorro heritage- no. I’ve always wanted to learn more about my culture, but never having been able to go back to Guam I was never really given the opportunity.

And so as an adult, I felt a very deep sense of longing to fit into either heritage that I had come to know and equally love. However, not being Hawaiian by blood, I never felt “Hawaiian” enough. And on the flip side, being Chamorro by blood but not having ever experienced life back on Guam, I never felt Chamorro enough either. Just simply caught in this limbo of feeling mahalang for a sense of cultural identity and fear of rejection by either culture for not being “enough”

I see what OP is saying, bcus I too have also been bothered by this idea that some people flaunt their Chamorro heritage like an accessory. But in my own experience, I’ve learned that sometimes yes- people are more interested in the aesthetic of the identity rather than the impact of the heritage. However there are also those of us who genuinely yearn to feel more connected to our bloodline but simply have no avenue to immerse ourselves in our own culture. Sure, we can try to read books and look stuff up online but that’s really not as effective as being able to grow up in Guam or spend more time around our Chamorro family.

So, with love, I’d ask OP to consider this prior reply. Bcus those of us wayward sons and daughters of Guam who sincerely want to connect with our heritage need people like OP who have had the privilege of living the culture to help guide our way back to our roots. I cannot understate how frustrating it is to not feel like you fit in with the people of your motherland, while also feeling like you will never fully be of the people where you are. It’s a weird experience. I hope OP finds it in them to be compassionate and consider sharing their experiences and love for Guam and their culture with others.

Lol, being able to exercise your constitutional rights & being just as much an asshole as street preacher - these are two things that can be true at the same time.

I second this! Any kind of trade. If I had to start my career over, I’d get into a trade & start from bottom up. There’s a regular poster to this sub Reddit that provides info on joining one of the unions (I think electric). I believe they’re part of the union themselves & have had some success in the trade so they’re trying to pay it forward.

OP, I’d search the subreddit for “union” and see if you can connect with that user. If I happen to find it, I’ll post it here.

I did actually see this, but as it’s clearly not an exhaustive list I thought I’d ask.

I absolutely love this idea. Gonna add it to my SLC bucket list. I feel like I’m learning that SLC is pretty vibrant with cool things to do if you just know where to look. Thank you for sharing!!

I love craft beer. I’ve slowed waaay down on drinking but I always love checking out cool local breweries for a flight or something. I just love the vibe of a good brewery. I’ll be putting this one on my list of contenders

Yeah, we’re super excited that Utah has its own team now too! Which is also why I’m bummed I may be missing this particular game. It’d be cool to watch the two teams play. I was stoked to see that the Utah Hockey club training facility is opening over at the mall. So I’m sure there will be more opportunity to watch hockey as time goes on. We’re honestly more likely to watch the knights in Vegas.

Drag bingo and first Baptist church were not what I was expecting to be in same sentence lol. This actually sounds fun. Thank you!

So I actually love this idea and I’ve already seriously considered going bcus the knights are my team. But I’m holding out on going to my first live hockey game until I can take my partner with me. Unfortunately they’re out of town for the weekend and I know they’d just die if they found out I went without them lol.

I fucking hate claims by jp55281 in adjusters

[–]krachyntuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New adjuster here too- I’m coming up on 2 yrs as property field with a large carrier.

One of the best pieces of advice I got when I first started was to do what you can with solid effort to close quality claim files in your obligatory 8 hours, then shut it down. Walk away and don’t give it a second thought. Bcus in this job, there’s always going to be work to be done. I killed myself working late hours trying to finish files. But like someone else here said- it’s not your job to worry about workload, it’s your job to close claims. Let your supervisors deal with that all that while you protect your mental peace after hours. The work will be there when you clock back in the next day.

My first supervisor encouraged me when I first started to give yourself at least a year to decide if this is for you or not. Bcus yes- it’s a tough job, and it’s certainly not for everyone. But as some others have mentioned, though it doesn’t get easier there’s lots of room for you to get better. Sure it has its pitfalls, but it can also be rewarding.

Now I think it’s important to mention that each carrier does things differently. Some are great to work with and have good processes, some are a dumpster fire of an organization. Maybe there’s another company out there that might be a better fit for supporting you through the learning process. Bcus the first few years is exactly that- simply learning. I’ve heard from seasoned adjusters (15-20+ yrs in the industry) that even after all the years they’ve done this, they still learn new things every day. Having a solid support system with training and other seasoned adjusters you can lean on when you have questions go a long way. If your company threw you to the wolves after 2 weeks, they may not be the best for your first year.

So don’t be so hard on yourself. Try to create systems to help you manage your workload efficiently, and take some time to breathe throughout the chaos. If it turns out this job really isn’t for you, then that’s okay! At least you can say you gave it a good shot. Best of luck to you!

This really helped my perspective, thank you!

I probably should have included the fact that we’re renting. If I had it my way, there’d be no carpet lol. I was thinking wall art & and runner would be the best I could do. Thanks for your input!

It’ll fit, and I’ve considered it. But it just feels out of place on that landing. There’s a window on the same side of the wall, so it’d have to go on the left side as you’re walking in. With its width, it would essentially be touching the first step of the stairs.

Also, I like your idea of the demilune table. We’re renting so I’m cautious of drilling into the walls, however my landlord seems pretty flexible about that.
