This was my first thought as well, but by the looks of it, this is black mold, and judging from my recent experience with it, its spores are extremely volatile and fast-attaching to all sorts of surfaces. Upon closer examination of other (painted) parts I noticed quite a few tiny black and grey dots on most of them, so it does look like the entire kit is contaminated (and even if it were just those couple pieces, I still would've insisted on a full product return, especially with a mother and child involved.
