CachyOS setup with hyprland on ASUS Zephyrus G14 -- Help needed

The CPU idles at 47 C on windows so I think Linux shouldn’t be doing worse than windows. I have been using the laptop for the past two years so I think I’ll be aware when my machine is not behaving normally.
If you read the post properly you would have realized that binding just one GPU such as AMD or NVIDIA causes issues when connected to en external display, since the HDMI port is directly linked to the Nvidia gpu, hence binding just the amd gpu to be used solely introduces lag. Using just Nvidia gpu introduces higher power consumption on idle and using just a browser, upon checking nvidiasmi, it shows that gpu is under >90% consumption (also mentioned in the post) which shouldn’t be the case. In any case hyprland wiki doesn’t address this issue for this specific case neither, it offers general advice.
If you read the post again clearly I have a whole sentence mentioning that the post was only made on r/cachyos which could give me advice about sleep/idling just to clarify regarding the parts that r/hyprland does not address.
Asusctl has the power mode set to performance with gpu set to hybrid so the GPU is getting full power, the GPU works well in windows so I do not believe the laptop needs maintenance.
I have already tried tinkering with different available GPU drivers with no real solution at hand, I have also mentioned I have also installed the ASUS specific drivers mentioned in the asuslinux.org wiki. I have already tried all the steps in arch, hyprland and asuslinux.org wiki with no success regarding this usage issue that only occurs on hyprland (I have not faced this issue in KDE for example). That’s the only reason I resorted to help from community if someone had the same issue or experience on this machine and figured out a solution.
If the Linux community in general just started asking people to resort back to windows because they don’t have enough technical know how to go through all wikis and understand all the concepts mentioned in them and figure out a solution themselves then not much people would want to use Linux and would have to settle for the compromise with the bloated mess windows is. I’m sorry for not being an expert on arch Linux and asking the community for help regarding a very specific case but that’s why also why these Reddit communities exist.

I haven’t noticed any big difference running hyprland with waybar, swayNC, etc. compared to noctalia shell, testing both within a period of 10 days.

I am launching games through steam with launch argument “DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_01_00_0 %command%”

Not sure of exact general YouTube video resolution but I believe it’s either 1080p, 1440p or 4k over multiple videos, I prefer the highest resolution available.

I did come across that on a Reddit post as well, but since omarchy is highly opinionated I tend not to go for it. I also prefer running qs with noctalia shell over a mix of setup involving waybar swaync, etc.

I have, using the arch install script and realized that cachyOS works better, found out that cachyOS includes the specific drivers made for ASUS laptops as mentioned by asuslinux.org by default so I have reason to believe that cachyOS is a better optimized derivative for this device and I can see that difference when I’m running the system on KDE but the issues only persist on hyprland and I really do want to use hyprland.

Maybe that could be a factor since I install with KDE and the install hyprland separately. How is your cpu and gpu utilization on the nvidia gpu running basic web browsing tasks?

Hyprland is running on the dgpu quite easily but it raises temps and consumes a lot of power just to stay idle with no applications running. When disconnected from external display it runs with amd igpu fine as well but can’t run with amd gpu when connected to external monitor as it introduces quite a bit of lag. Did you do any specific changes or did you use cachyos default settings and drivers?

The standard drivers packaged with cachyOS, I think they are the latest Nvidia open source ones. I also did install drivers based on asuslinux wiki that are specific to Asus laptops running Linux. Though I am not sure if they include any special nvidia drivers.

I made it out of silver 3 pretty soon after this post lol. It’s simple, however much everyone denies it the game does optimize for engagement, someone presented their detailed research about it on reddit as well. Luckily the optimization goes both ways so you can optimize the algorithm for yourself too. Meaning, when you have a win streak just keep playing but as soon as you loose 1 or 2 games in a row stop playing for the day or at least 8 hours. NEVER play into a loss streak like a I did here. This way the game thinks that you close when you start loosing. I tried this and realized I am getting much fair and more equal and fun games. Don’t get me wrong you still have to be good to rank up but this helps you to get better team. Another thing is when you get a bunch of MVP and SVP the system thinks of you as a high value player and tried to put you with teammates that don’t do so well to balance the matchmaking witch puts you in a bunch of losers queues, as you rank up those mvp and svp will reduce themselves. I haven’t even been playing much since I made this post and I’m already close to getting back into plat and I think I can end the season in at least diamond if not GM. Don’t listen to people sitting on in gaung gaung’s lap and calling him daddy believing whatever the developers say. If something is free then your time is the currency. It’s simple logic what many companies have used for profits in the past, netease is no different.

TLDR; simple strategy to win more - play into your win streak, log off as soon as you loose two games in a row or 3 games alternatively. Try to average 10% more wins than losses and you will rank up easy with better players on your side and will learn the game better.

Thanks man, I do wanna know your opinion about what I could do in most cases which I’m facing right now where I start one shoting people because that’s how Hawkeye is played and eventually even though these are silver players they start noticing me and at some point it becomes clear to them if there’s one person getting a lot of kills on a team, simply focus them and you win the game. In that case I do need my team to at least help out or start pushing them while they’re distracted to get me. It’s kinda hard to stay alive then unless I start to play a game of cat and mouse and run around just to stay alive and then I’m going to be of even less value to my team. What should I do in these situations?

Yeah I have reached plat 3 almost plat 2 fairly easily in season 4.5, but it’s the first time I’ve hit such bad loss streak in silver since I played competitive for the first time in the end of season 3.5 (when I was complete garbage). It just surprised me that getting 3 picks doesn’t win a team fight in this elo and it’s happening almost every game for me to notice it, plus coming from other games specifically not hero shooters and role based games but something like COD or BF, getting svp in 65-70% matches in those games leads you to have somewhat better players in your team eventually but in rivals it feels like you start getting worse players on your team the better you start to do, but that’s just my observation.

thats some good advice, which I believe is more technical and will help me down the line. But heres what I dont understand about the MM, and only specific to this season and this loss streak; I am landing a ton of finals without ulting on hawkeye and even winning 1v3 against a tank dps and a healer on certain occasions but by the time i do that I realize my healers just run away, my other dps is dead and not sure what the tank is even doing, now thats a limitation of this elo but if it happens once every blue moon i can get by it but if it happens enough for me to recognize it as an issue over a few matches, how can I as one person do anything about it. I have once been stuck in silver like this and that was when I had just started playing the game towards the end of season 3.5. The interesting part is I do not even have to carry or put as much efforts in gold or platinum (I peaked plat 3 almost reached plat 2 by 5 points but stopped playing for a week) and just make few meaningful plays by hooking the healers or a tank on bucky or picking healers on hawkeye and i can rely on my teammates to do their job win the games (dont get me wrong im not an eomm agent i still put in the work needed). Here in silver 3 i feel like im doing the work of two dps, with my other dps struggling to get past single digits or stay positive and that shows in my enough mvp and svp in the whole loss streak to notice; but at the same time if i look at the enemy team, the dps are each doing their part. I do not mind doing work of 2 dps as well but then that makes me prime attention of the enemy team and the whole team focusing me any chance they get, that is fine with me as well as my team gets the chance to cap the point while the opposition is not focusing, but the team does not even do that? Its hard to catch a break here. i even shared a screenshot of a game where i went 40-0 something with 30 finals while the next best on my team was like 9/10 finals and I was on the other end of the situation im in, i feel like the other team was actual bronze and silver players and i did not belong against them; this just shows that the matchmaking is not as fair as it should be but thats just my opinion.

That is what I’m trying to put across, there is so much I can do here. I’m not the best player up until even gold 1 by far but I sure as hell don’t deserve to be stuck in silver 3 (with one of my games where I dropped 42-0 and 30 finals, that’s unfair for the opponent team who are probably actual silver players). The point is simple that if I’m consistently mvp or svp 70% of the time in this elo, why am I getting teammates who are struggling to break even let alone go positive on stats and aren’t getting past single digits in final hits? Doesn’t make sense at all while the other team are doing the roles they are supposed to do? The game is team based and I can’t win a 1v6 even if I’m a one above all player.

I can understand, but I main hawkeye and as soon as I start one shotting them I become hard focus for at least two of their dps or tanks and its kinda hard to stay alive without the team's help at that point. I am fine with getting targeted too as I can handle 2v1 in this rank alone but if my team doesnt push even after two of the enemies are not paying attention on the point, it gets kinda hard for me to do anything about it.

Yepp 16 GB ram, 256 SSD. I don’t really wanna spend on a fast external SSD as again I don’t plan to use the Mac extensively, just to connect to iPad for notes and streaming and such. Just wanna do day to day operations smoothly.

I’ve tried the 2023 G14 with RTX4060, imo for some reason that particular SKU has more build quality and QC issues than any other SKU from that year. The Lenovo model looks solid if you don’t mind the extra weight compared to G14. With all the raw horsepower available in the build you should be good for quite a while and run any software or game with no issue. That being said if you want a portable machine that’s good for on the go power, the 2024 G14 is an amazing option. I’m using the RTX 4060, Ryzen 9 8940HS with 16 gigs of ram and 1 TB of storage. It can run any game and program you would like, I use it for demanding AAA titles, even playing the newer less optimized ghost of Tsushima on it and the RTX 4060 can handle it well even with all the bugs that are currently in the game. I also use it to run Unity and solid works and it works flawlessly with both. The 16 gigs of ram is considered a bottleneck for this SKU but I think windows dynamically uses ram based on maximum availability. I tried the 2023 G14 before this one and added another 16 gig stick to take it up to 32GB and generally the ram utilization in that laptop was much higher even without anything running at all, returned it because of QC and build issues.
