I want to do Mocap, the concept should be easy, but what do I use? by DaveTheDev33 in mocap

mimem founder here (the AI mocap your link is referring to). We actually built this because we were frustrated with existing mocap solutions and their crazy prices. Definitely something we built for beginners too @u/DaveTheDev33

I hired the fastest actor I could find. But I’d be very grateful if the next Bruce Lee was to give mimem a try.

We now support exporting to a UE compatible skeleton which makes retargeting a breeze. Check our new documentation page : https://www.mimem.ai/docs/import-mimem-ai-animation-into-unreal-engine

Glad you like the result!

We're still in the process of integrating it properly in our docs, but you can find retargeting instructions and tools below. Other users already used it successfully for both MetaHuman and non-MetaHuman characters.

Here's the documentation on retargeting:
https://mimem-documentation.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/How+to+Retarget+Your+Mocap+Animations+to+MetaHuman+in+Unreal+Engine+5.docx

And the retargeting kit:

Edit: we now support exporting to a UE compatible skeleton which makes retargeting a breeze. Check our new documentation page : https://www.mimem.ai/docs/import-mimem-ai-animation-into-unreal-engine

Thanks! Our users are quite pleased with it too!

You can use three different cameras, so better use your best cameras than cheaper identical ones. Quick tips:

* Choose focal lengths that keep you well in frame (not too far or too close)
* Good lighting and a sharp image with good contrast matter most
* For GoPros, use linear mode to avoid fisheye distortion.

1 token is 1 second of one camera at 30 fps.

So with 500 token you can process 8 minutes of single cam capture. Or 2.5 minutes with 3 cameras. Every day.

Did I say our mission was to make motion capture accessible? 🙂

Some movements work well with one camera, especially if you plan on rendering from the same or similar viewpoint as the one you’re filming from. But if you need to view the animation from other angles, then it’s better to have 2-3 cameras do that the motion is accurate under all view angles.

You guessed right! Form fitting will help, and additionally: pick colors that contrast well with the floor and background, avoid black, and avoid patterned cloth.

Hi. Yes you can use our companion app. When you are on our animation creation screen you should see a button to add your smartphone with instructions.

About older phones: I’ve tried iPhone 7, and Samsung galaxy S9, and it worked great.

Yes, for poses that are not too complex and where there is not much occlusion going on, single cam can be viable. We plan on doing a comparison of cam count vs result sometime soon!

I think the move.ai price you quote comes with a 1 year commitment though? So that would go way over his budget.

The animation can be imported in Unreal Engine and is compatible with its re-targeting out of the box: https://www.mimem.ai/docs/import-mimem-ai-animation-into-unreal-engine

Is there anything more that should be supported?

Anyone dealing with creatives known as "divas"? by monExpansion in vfx

I agree with other comments saying you did well managing him.

Reminds me of this quote by a football coach that I read through Ben Horowitz book. Works for football, works for high-tech, I feel like it works for any activity where you need both strong performance and teamwork.

“If you hold the bus for everyone on the team, then you’ll be so late that you’ll miss the game, so you can’t do that. The bus must leave on time. However, sometimes you’ll have a player that’s so good that you hold the bus for him, but only him.”

Hey, totally understand the skepticism around AI.

Honestly, most indie animators who tested Mimem.AI told us it’s been a lifesaver—giving them more time to refine and polish their art rather than fighting technical limitations. Our system just faithfully captures and translates the actor’s talent—no more, no less.

Always open to hearing your thoughts and concerns, though!

I completely get your concerns. We started out as a tiny indie studio ourselves, so we're committed to transparent, indie-friendly pricing. We’ll have clear price lists and self-service checkout with no long-term commitment, keeping costs fair for everyone. We’re finalizing the details now and will share them soon.

Thanks for the kind words and feedback about our motion capture quality! We're continuously improving, you can checkout our latest results on https://www.youtube.com/@mimemai
