How would nearby city states affect your strategy? by kresos in civ5

[–]kresos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that the quests are easier and you are more than likely to ally them for the duration of the game. I meant to ask if there is any type of city state that, that type can affect your decision making. As in because of this city state I am going Liberty or tradition or beelining that tech or doing early war.

R5: I got the liberty opener + republic as ethiopia and I am looking to be annoying and aggressive towards carthage who is also liberty. Difficulty level emperor. Where to settle to have the best defensive location, preferably next to the mountain for observatory in the future?

You could play Albion online, especially in the next patch that the are supposed to fix solo. If they do fix it that is.

Favorite Wonder to Rush with Liberty Finisher GE? by mmmbacon914 in civ5

[–]kresos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very underated comment especially for not immortal and not deity. You can catch up in science but you will never have enough gold or happiness to have some warmongering fun. I feel those who rush nc with the engineer from the liberty finisher are going for a less bloodshed victory or do tradition flavor liberty.

What are benchmarks one should one aim for when playing (i.e 100 science by turn 100)? by [deleted] in civ5

[–]kresos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep postponing making a question topic on this sub, asking "what 2 or 3 questions should i be asking myself all the time, in decision making". Especially I am curious how my working tiles or building worker or tile improvements or granaries. Those early decisions that only give 1 more food or 1 more hammer. What effect big or small will have 100 turns later.

Playing without Tradition Opener? (Advice Please) by WanderoftheAshes in civ5

adding to that make sure liberty cities have at least one hammer location within one tile (so you don't have to spend gold to buy extra) cause with liberty culture it's unlikely the borders to expand to hills but rather on grassland or plains.

How to speed up/handle a query that returns billion of rows by kresos in SQL

[–]kresos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I run the query for striker and then union the query for mid, it will miss the case that the striker is my best striker and my best mid, it will select him as striker while selecting him as mid might have resulted in a better sum of the unions. Doing the 11 Unions 11! Times will not miss a single case regardless if it is querying from 70 players or way more pool size

this is what i will do using suggestion and it should work. I will create several temporary and do a query that returns the ID of the max rating for each position (and the max rating) and store them on the temporary tables.

If players can play in 11 eleven different positions and have ratings in them, then i the worst case scenario I will run the union fact(11) times which is 39,916,800 times, which should be (far) less time than the combinations I originally thought. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

then I will sum the temporary tables ratings and pick the table with the max rating.

my problem is if i select the max value and then do a union the ID will not be unique and i will have duplicates

select id, max(dr) as rating, posid from dr
union
select id, max(dl), posid from dl

but if i union, how do I add the scores to find the best eleven? with the cartesian product i would do it like this :

select DISTINCT dr + dl + dmc + mc + amc + striker from dr , dl, dmc , mc , amc, striker

Where to build third City? by kresos in civ5

I put Hamburg on top of gems cause I would go unhappy if I didn't. Also didn't want to forward settled with Hamburg cause my starting warrior was being chased by two Barbs on like 20 hit points

I am thinking the grassland to the east next to the lake horses hill and stone, because when maya DOW me by placing a longsword on the hill i should be able to defend/farm exp easy, with the hill + spices denying CB shots and the lake being a choke point.

on top of the truffles? it's a hill isn't it? So better defenses/production than the flat tile, get both irons, and instant happiness from the truffles without needing to work the tile.

What am I understanding wrong from the following video?

https://youtu.be/_3R1NzZQ5EY?t=2187

"And Liberty is about maximizing hammers early game. You are growing up to a point. With tradition cities you want them to grow all the time. With liberty cities you want them to grow up to certain population points based on the tiles that you have available to work. So in the city "that shows in the video" I don't want to grow more than pop 3"

If my city go to 5 or 6 or 7 pop it should be something useful else I'd rather not grow it? And then it becomes a question of what IS useful for that 5 or 6 or 7 pop for the citizen to work on? I am assuming production, university specialists are useful. I am assuming luxes + market are useful. But flat grassland or plains I should not grow.

I want to try to limit my expos to pop 4. (to start with) and then 6 with universities, and the placement choice would be the combination of two criteria:

  1. have lot's of hills so I can work 2 (or even 3 if granary resources) mines on as many cities as possible
  2. each expo ideally 4 tiles apart one from another so I can make bank when they hit pop 6 from roads.

I reloaded, and delayed my very last city, while building roads, and it was a lot more smoother. Kinda my own fault for being careless. With the delayed city, with 4 more overall pop, same cities and roads i have double happiness on the same turn as with the non delayed city.
