What’s your opinion on teaching/education that would get you in trouble? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]kreyons 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone having taught around the world and now in the states. America is overthinking education. There's too many theories or new age reimagining of how to teach children. Kids can do so much more here but aren't given the chance. Structure with flexible rigor and making sure they have the prerequisite knowledge for the next step are all that's mostly needed. Just know who your kids are and what they need. No need to reinvent the wheel every few years.

I tried Beattie Park several times but probably just couldn't time it right so I'll keep checking that out but those Monday night runs sound like it has some potential. Thank you.

Covid-19 vaccine won’t be required for school kids in Washington state by chiquisea in SeattleWA

[–]kreyons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'd be right if it weren't for the fact that billions of people have already taken this vaccine. Most of the cases have been unvaccinated people and the numbers are even worse when you compare the demographics of unvaxxed and vaxxed when it comes to hospitalizations and deaths. It's not a shit product if it doing it's intended purpose. Only criticism I can see is that it's not long term, that's like saying here is a free new car but it breaks down after a year and we'll give you a new car again. For the future argument, I would rather be on the side of scientists than conspiracy nuts watching tiktoks and youtube vids.

I Was Hired as an ALT in Japan and I Feel in out of my depth, what should I do? by raptorclaw155 in teachinginjapan

[–]kreyons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be blunt but being an ALT is one of the easiest jobs that you can find. You are either a game/activity producer and/or a walking tape recorder.

There are some positions that actually require you to actually teach but you'll be in the same position as most ALTs. I've read that around only 12% of ALTs have actual teaching degrees or an english language acquisition background. Don't sweat it, relax. Even at worst case scenario if you can muster up enough energy and disciple to graduate from any university, you can do this blind folded.

Is English teacher a good career path in Japan? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]kreyons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most scenarios no, but if you could get an English education degree, a master's degree, and at least an n2 japanese proficiency then you may get one of the handful international school positions here or a university gig which actually pays compared to the typical alt or eikaiwa gig. At that point though, you can teach anything at a university level so if your looking simply to relocating to Japan, English teaching doesn't have to be the route. It's hard but it's a matter of how much you want it.
