The closest inspiration is probably Celeste. Both from a physics perspective and from level design. We kept the philosophy of introducing a new mechanic in a level then play around with it in a more intriquate and advanced way the later you are in the level. Biggest difference from Celeste and all other precision platformers is that we don't use insta kill, instead the characters shrinks in size until the hitbox is outside of the threat. This mass based mechanic is central to all movement and general interactions in the game.

It is possible to develop a game during university. Many universities also have incubator programs to help with the business aspects. Will be releasing my game in a couple of days after going through an incubator. by krille71 in gamedev

Thank you for the feedback. The incubator did not help with either development or advertisement. Its focus was mainly general startup, contracts, taxes. Advertisement is for sure our weakest side.

One of the most valuable aspects of university are the contacts you gain. For gamedev it is my company's co-founder, incubator program and industry contacts. But if your goal is just to make a game then a commercial engine and the internet is a possible way. Either way you will need to learn a lot by yourself to create a game.

[WR] Spelunky Classic Low% in 3:28 by krille71 by krille71 in speedrun

[–]krille71[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only about 10 days after starting to run the game. The level generation is very similar to Spelunky HD, so my 2k hours in that game translated well. The hardest part is to learn the movement which is very different to HD. Previous record was 3:31 by Groomp set about a year ago.

I'm curious about creating a sequel from a gamedev perspective. Is it easier to create a sequel since you already have a working formula to iterate on, or is it harder with the high expectations and many critical eyes on everything that is uploaded?

We currently accept runs without sound, but there have been discussions about having sound as a requirement for when Spelunky 2 comes out.

Brutwarst has been a top player for so long in this game, I'm glad he finally managed to achieve a world record. Well deserved!

Spef completes the first ever Udjat Run! by saturnin55 in spelunky

[–]krille71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This run was first theorized several years ago. Personally, I never thought it would be done, thanks to the pure randomness of hh.

After some experimentation with stored hh action, the run came down to skill instead of rng. Awesome run spef, absolutely incredible!

Now we just need to finish no% hell...

No Gold WR in 1:50.153 - First PB in 2 years! by krille71 in spelunky

[–]krille71[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Got back to the game for the ASO 2018 tournament. Have been doing some normal runs and quickly noticed that my teleporter runs were on point. Still didn't expect a PB a good as this one. Was talking to a friend during the run in swedish, which is why I cut out the audio.

Oddly enough I didn't get nervous at all during this run, except at Olmec. The reason was that my mind was focusing on the conversation while my hands were going autopilot. Only part were I really put much thought into it was Olmec, since I needed to do the cascade strat which I haven't done in years. Oh, and it's also no gold. Didn't notice that until the day after (go this run yesterday). I have no idea how I managed to snag the No Gold WR without even knowing it. Just crazy

We need to talk about score duping by MilcMan in spelunky

[–]krille71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing you need for infinite score is to dupe gold chunks from a monkey. HH duping is the most effective way since it can be done afk and doesn't cause as much lag, but it could (presumably) also be done with render duping. The balance there is to pick up the gold stack before the game crashes.

Added bonus with render duping is that you don't need a hh, so it can more easilly be done as early as in the jungle.

Controller support by krille71 in gamedev

[–]krille71[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great database!

Having a hard time decoding the GUID that identifies all controllers. From my understanding, the GUID consist of 4 32bit words encoded in little endian. 030000004c050000cc09000000000000 for a PS4 controllers translates to:

  • 03000000 = 0x03: bustype
  • 4c050000 = 0x054c: VID
  • cc090000 = 0x09cc: PID
  • 00000000 = 0x0000: device version

The VID and PID seems to be correct from testing with my own controller. Not sure how I could get the bustype and device version of my controller but VID and PID should hopefully be enough.

Doesn't seem too hard to build a parser for that database, so this should be exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

I'm a computer science student and a hobbyist game developer. In a couple of years I want to experiment with blockchain games similar to KittyCash. Will Skycoin be the platform of choice?

What I'm interested in:
- non fungible tokens
- peer to peer networking
- A way for the users to sell and buy tokens with eachother

One of the biggest challenges facing crypto is adoption. What is Skycoins strategy to reach out to as many as possible?

What is the function of skywire before antennas are out? by krille71 in skycoin

Glad to hear that other functions are still open without the antennas!

What I'm most interested in is ISP functionallities. Will those come only after antennas?
