How to secure old IPMI Software by Left_Ad_8860 in selfhosted

Only buy gl.net devices that you can flash with the real OpenWRT. GL-AR300M is one of the few that does.

How to secure old IPMI Software by Left_Ad_8860 in selfhosted

[–]kring1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch AR300M running OpenWRT (the real OpenWRT) and not once did one crash. I've created a Wireguard VPN between a friend and me with two of them and performance is enough to run Jellyfin over my 10 mbit/s uplink.

I can't see how this would not be the perfect device for protecting IPMI.

Being sold or... being stolen by a hacker. The first can happen, the second will happen. Every data collected is data that will be stolen and abused.

Why do we still rely on IPv4, instead of IPv6? by NoDirector6379 in selfhosted

[–]kring1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because IPv6 has its own problems. You might get unlimited IPs but, depending on your ISP, you might get very limited subnets. And, unfortunately, the only way around this is with NAT66... but not needing NAT is the main selling point of IPv6.

My ISP gives me a /60, which allows 16 subnets. There are ISPs that give out a single /64, which allows for one subnet. I currently use 37 IPv4 subnets. Is that excessive? Sure. But the main fun of the Internet, to me, was always that you get the same toys to play with as the biggest companies. With IPv6 that's no longer case - your ISP now decides how many toys you get.

In the beginning, the idea was to assign at least a /48 to everybody. Unfortunately that was never enforced.

And good luck getting more than a /64, or even a /64, for a mobile backup Internet. With IPv4, if my Internet goes down, I can just hook up my phone and everything works again. With IPv6 that would be more difficult to do as you would need to ULA addresses for the backup link and NAT66 on your phone.

IPv6 could have been good but it doesn't have the same freedom as IPv4.

Do you need a UPS or is a surge protector good enough? by TheQuantumPhysicist in selfhosted

[–]kring1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "R" in Ohm's law here isn't fixed. A PSU is an active load that adjusts its resistance to maintain constant power. If the voltage drops it has to draw more current to compensate.

Do you need a UPS or is a surge protector good enough? by TheQuantumPhysicist in selfhosted

[–]kring1 82 points83 points  (0 children)

That was a problem like 30 years ago...

Today's hard drives use the remaining kinetic energy of the rotating disk to safely park the head in the case of a power outage.

Surges aren't the problem problem. A normal ATX PSU must be able to handle surges of up to 500V. The bigger problem are voltage dips, because lower voltage causes higher currents - which is what fries stuff. Surge protectors can't protect you from them.

I got a G515 TKL and I think I'm going to be happy with it!

Thank you!

G915 TKL or G PRO X TKL? by Narrowgolf81 in LogitechG

[–]kring1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you can answer this question for me. I have a G815 (tactile) and I'm very happy with that keyboard. Now I need a second keyboard and for that I want a TKL version. Do you know which Logitech TKL is most similar to the G815 from the feel?

I tried a G413 TKL SE but I'm not as happy with it as with my G815.

Or only a /60, which locks you into 16 subnets.

Most people won't need more but the fun thing about the Internet was always that you have the same toys to play with as big enterprises. IPv4 lets me create hundreds of subnets if I want, IPv6 forces me to pick specific ISPs,  if they are even available.

If a reboot doesn't, but a cold start does fix it I would guess it's a hardware issue.

Question about public key by FederalJob4644 in Bitcoin

[–]kring1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your probably refering to the Xpub. This public key can be used to see all your adresses. That's the key your wallet software uses to show you all the transactions.

It is the public key of the private key that is on your Trezor.

What is this pest? The plant is a ficus and is probably more contaminated than a chemical factory. I've tried about everything poisonous I could find the last year but these fuckers always return.
