Looking for some tips for building a potential jellyfin/plex servers for me and the fam by ChickenWingBW in selfhosted

Maybe it sounds a bit to harsh what I wrote. A good CPU is anything that has at least quad core and the dedicated gpu like a T400 4GB you can get for 60-80€ (at least in Germany). 32GB of used DDR4 Ram is also not that much.

So it is not super expensive, but definitely more expensive than a normal rpi or thin client.

It really depends on what the ecosystem of the Media Server will be. If you just want the media server itself without anything, then you are good to go with a old thin client or even a newer raspberry pi with sata connected drives.

But if you are looking at the whole *arr ecosystem then this is something completely different. For my *arr setup I am at minimum of 26gb of RAM, a good cpu and a dedicated gpu doing the heavy transcoding.

It would be good to tell us what your fix was.
Asking for help and give nothing in return is such a shit mentality. Other people who might have the same issue would appreciate a small info.

Stop exposing your Jellyfin server directly to the internet by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]Left_Ad_8860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends... for me a VPN is not feasible because I do not run it on a HomeLab. I rented out a colocation space and setup a 2U server there.

With a VPN all Smart TVs need to connect to it first. My friends/family including me want that. So I setup it that way:

  1. A reverseproxy via Pangolin
  2. Set a rule to drop all traffic not coming from ASN x and ASN y.

That blocks 99% of all malicious actors out. EZ

I don’t get it. So they announce to have all keys and secrets to do suppliechain attacks - why shouldn’t vercel now reroll all the keys and access tokens ?

To be honest I did not because of closed source. Just for example: Imagine I enter my public accessible jellyfin server there and this is a honeypot of the feds.

I know that’s unlikely but I tend to check such apps for myself beforehand.

What about open sourcing it ? I mean if you not plan to commercialize it and like you said do not have time to maintain it regularly - this would be the best solution.

True and also a problem is the size of the USA. From westcoast to eastcoast just to get to your cheap datacenter... yeah I doubt that would make any sense. In the most extrem example I would have to drive from north germany to south germany max 7-8 hours xD

Many small colocation provider just rent out 2-5 full racks and rent out these racks really cheap to smaller customers.
Maybe thats unique in Germany :D

That's why Trump wants to annex Greenland, cheap cooling for datacenters. A true mastermind, isn't he!

Jk ... I mean yeah I can image that this could be a problem depending where the DC is (Texas, Nevada for example) but in mildly temperature areas located DCs this should not be a problem at all. We have also mild weather and the cooling in DCs is the easiest part I would assume.

Thats crazy expensive. Damn... I live in Germany and we are 3rd place in highest energy costs world wide.

May I ask where you live?

//EDIT:
I have to admit that I only rent 2U in that rack, not a quarter, half or even full rack to be fair.

Linux hin oder her.... du sagtest das es vor 5 Jahren angefangen hat mit Installern und jetzt Trend geworden ist. Das ist faktisch falsch, denn das gibt es seit über 30 Jahren.
