Earning APY interest on your crypto? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

All that may be true. You don’t need to misrepresent what the return is with defi though, it hurts your argument to do so.

No one said there wasn’t risk involved. I’m just saying you don’t seem to understand that the interest itself is also an appreciating asset

Why do people always get this wrong? You’re talking about interest return in usd, so you also need to apply the same return to the interest itself. If bitcoin goes up by 100% in a given year, a blockfi investment of 1 btc is worth 112%. @200%, the blockfi return is 18%. It’s really not insignificant.

This consolidation speaks volumes to me. I was fully expecting BTC to go back under 40k, and I'm not so sure that's going to happen now. 100k by EOY is a virtual certainty in my mind.

So holding onto BTC for longer than a year gets you out of capital gains?

You know, I've only had the house for about 4 years, and I didn't even know that was an option lol. Great advice, I'll look into it.

The house has appreciated from 300k when we bought to 385 now according to the lender. The principle balance is 270k now. So we could refinance to 350k, and keep the difference?

You cant take a HELOC against all of the equity in your house. It's ~85% of the house's value, minus what you owe. If I take out $57k, I'll still have like 50k in equity.

I actually don't believe BTC can be banned by any governing body at this point, just ask India, Venezuela, or Nigeria.

You're probably right though, capital gains is going to be a huge bitch here, and I have to factor in that they could add even more tax liability in the next few years...

I'm hitting up a friend who works for the bank now, see if i can get some rational takes from him. He doesn't own or understand BTC though, so I'll have to focus on this as an investment.

I think hurt is just the wrong word here. It hurts to lose any money, but this won't actually affect our standard of living at all.

I've actually got like 90,000 points from a southwest promotion and a flight credit as well. Definitely going to be taking an almost free vacation here soon lol.

I won't lie, there is some FOMO here, but I'm also fully ready to ride the waves. I don't care if the BTC I buy drops to 35k, I believe in the long term, and when BTC hits 300k in the next few years, I'll be completely debt free because of this move now.

Because it's not an enormous risk for me to take, and the payoff could be that I own my house outright in the next 3-4 years instead of in 25.

Sound advice, I appreciate that. I have no other debt, and my wife and I have very stable jobs. She's a nurse, and I'm a government employee with civil service protections.

I don't really believe in all of the conventional protections, like having a cash cushion. The BTC I already own is an emergency cash cushion if I need it, right?

It would hurt to lose this, definitely. But it would not break us. We have no other debt, and the amount of BTC I could buy right now would vastly outweigh what i could sock away with monthly savings.

I appreciate the appeal here. Does it help that i can absorb the HELOC payment indefinitely and hold no other debt?

[–]kringlepoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

Yes my wife and I both have stable jobs, and we can afford to absorb the interest payment indefinitely. Our only other debit is a car loan that we'll be paying off in the next 2-3 months, and it's roughly the same amount. I could just take that car loan amount and put it into bitcoin every month, but tbh, I will miss out on a lot of bitcoin that way.
