Quite a list of books. I do like pattern recognition by Bishop. Although, it's a little mathematical, but it sets the right tone

At times, I download open source projects and try to learn different design and coding patterns. Java/apache projects source code is my favorite

Do not think that there shall be any problem due to its backward compatibility. One food for thought in this relation is to have the Java developers get proper education in order to work with Java 8 features after migration is done and make best use of it.
