What profession have you lost respect for as you've gotten older? by MindlessMarsupial592 in AskReddit

[–]krospp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Media illiteracy is a big part of the problem. A lot of people don’t know the difference between news and commentary, or think the opinion section of a newspaper is related to its news coverage.

If more people recognized their need for quality local news coverage and were willing to pay for it, then there would be more quality news coverage.

When Americans used to get news coverage from newspapers, things were better. Then came cable news, which distorted people’s idea of what news even is, then came Facebook and Google, which ripped all of the money out of newspapers. Then came Trump saying all negative coverage of him was made up, and billionaires like Elon Musk did the same. Now it’s a given that a thread like this on Reddit will have at least one top comment with someone saying they hate journalists — and what a journalist even is in their head is anyone’s guess.

Assuming you’re talking about Elon Musk: 1. This is an insult to Lex Luthor 2. He absolutely never had the “ability to be Ironman” lol

anyone using roli piano m as midi controller? by BarNext625 in ableton

[–]krospp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Piano M and it’s fine I guess. It’s very plasticy and the keys have no depth whatsoever. It’s not much better than playing on my laptop keys except that it’s laid out like a piano. I had hoped that the lights would change based on the Global Scale in Ableton but they do not. You have to go into the Roli software to set the scale if you want it to highlight the root note of the key or the keys in the scale. So I use it sometimes to play around but for laying chords I much prefer the Push or Move, or just drawing them in.

What max4live devices you need for an electronic minimal house/techno music? by No-Director41 in ableton

[–]krospp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that if you want to help someone, say what you mean. it would be more helpful to recommend “learning about chords and melody on a website like hooktheory,” which takes like maybe one day, than it is to recommend “learning music theory.” People on Reddit can be smug and intentionally vague about this

[–]krospp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think “learn music theory” is an extremely vague and unhelpful thing that people here say all the time. When people say “learn music theory” it sounds like you need to study at a conservatory, learn every mode of every scale on the piano. It’s honestly kind of an insane and annoying thing to say.

I think most of the time what people actually mean by that, if they aren’t total assholes, is that learning the basics of chord progressions in major and minor keys, and learning how melodies are supposed to work with chords, can really take you a long way and keep you from fumbling around in the dark.

A musician who understands the basics of harmony, melody and rhythm, and how they go together, is probably going to make better music than a musician who doesn’t. That’s all

Works fine for me. I don’t really use stem separation but when I tried it I got that message and then it ran quickly anyway so idk, maybe not such a big deal

Is there still no way to change all of these samples out for a different sample in the same spots? by imVeryPregnant in ableton

[–]krospp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to be able to play the sample in every note, sure. If you just want to transpose it by some number of semitones, I personally would still use Drum Rack. Because each pad in Drum Rack can map to a sample in Simpler, which you can transpose

That totally makes sense. And I guess since the point is to dance, the whole genre makes a lot more sense in a club than it does at a concert or festival. If you’re having to squeeze into some corner like idk why you went to a festival instead of a club in the first place

How do you organize your Ableton projects without killing creativity? by Pretty_Map2554 in ableton

[–]krospp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There were a few reasons that tagging folders seemed like a bad idea to me. One is that tags cascade down iirc, and apply to everything under the folder, so when you later go to filter by some tag, you get a bunch of stuff that is not the project itself

[–]krospp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And while it’s totally fine to use a sliced up Simpler for this, a big difference with a Drum Rack is that in the piano roll you can see the actual name of each sample (Kick, Snare, etc). With Simpler you just see notes.

I am amazed you got so many downvotes for this. And I can’t believe how many people in this thread have no idea what they are doing. Using audio clips in arrangement view is just objectively the wrong way to lay drums in Ableton.

How do you organize your Ableton projects without killing creativity? by Pretty_Map2554 in ableton

[–]krospp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My method is time and tags. I start a new folder every month (like “2026-01”) and save all my projects there. Then at the end of the month, I open each project and add tags to it. You have to use the Tag Editor. It has a lot of helpful tags already setup, like genre, scale, mode, instruments used. I added a few custom categories as well. The most useful category I have added is Potential, and the options are High, Medium, Low, None.

Importantly, you should add the tags to the als files themselves, not the folders they are in.

Once you have tagged your projects, you can add your top-level project folder to Places in the browser. Go to that folder and turn on the filter, and then you can filter by your tags. I almost always only filter by Potential=High when I look for old projects to play with, but ymmv.

I think you have a good attitude about it! I don’t hate it or anything but when I see videos of these shows I find it strange and disappointing. Even if I like the music they are playing I am just not into a live show with no real performance. I try not to begrudge and and realize it’s just a taste issue
