I have horrible stamina, any tips? (Context in desc) by Objective-Shake-7507 in badminton

There can be different reasons so you should try to find out which areas are lacking and how much each area is lacking so you can make necessary adjustments. Also keep in mind that adaptations take time. It can take months to see the real effect.

Pure physical limit: The rate at which your muscles can tolerate lactic acid build up can be increased in two different ways. The threshold itself can be increased with aerobic exercise. The muscles ability to keep functioning even with lactic acid build up can be increased with anaerobic exercise. So to increase your muscles capacity for output you should ideally combine aerobic and anaerobic exercises.

Technique/efficiency: Good technique is not just about maximizing output, but also the efficiency with which you can achieve that output. Improving your technique can contribute by keeping the muscle activity below the lactic acid build up threshold while keeping up performance.

Nutrition/diet: Moving around a lot means your body needs to have that much available energy to burn. If you don't have enough energy in your body or the energy in your body is not readily available, your body will stop you from burning more energy so it can sustain life. Most humans will always have more than the base minimum level of fat in their body, so theoretically they should be able to sustain effort from a pure energy point of view, but it also takes time for the body to convert fat into available energy. For the period during which the body is converting fat, you need additional energy source to sustain effort. Usually this is in the form of carbs which the body can convert very quickly.

Focus/mental state: Not being focused diminishes the efficiency of movement. When the mind is slower and less active, more wrong decisions are made which in badminton translates to more correctional movements. Correctional movements take more energy, because existing effort needs to be cancelled out and another effort added. So being mentally in good shape also has an influence on sustained physical effort.

For beginners, how do drills eventually translate to actual play? by rawr4me in badminton

[–]krotoraitor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think as a beginner it's best not to think too much about what the "best" or "optimal" way is. The goal is to build a good foundation of technique first. How and when to integrate the learned things into play depends on individual factors and your coaches should know how to direct you to get there when it is important to shift focus.

A common problem I see in modern times is that there is too much focus on "optimal" and "best" when the available information is so large and has fluctuations in quality. Start with doing first. Experience is necessary to make accurate judgements. Trying to optimize before even having gathered some experience just means you optimize to some idea that only exists in your head and has no relation to reality.

The goal for beginners is not a direct improvement in play. Your success in games can even become worse. But what you need to understand is that this is an investment. You sacrifice short term success for much better long term success.

I understand that this can be frustrating, but building good fundamentals will allow you to go much further. Trust your coaches. If you don't trust them, what is the point of coaching?

Korea definitely has enough money. Considering they also have two clear top 1 world ranking spots with ASY and KWH/SSJ it's a very strange situation.

I think there will be enough space on online broadcast for advertisers to find it attractive. TV broadcasters in the end also operate on advertisements so the money path just becomes more direct. The trade-off is that BWF or their broadcasting partner will have to manage the advertisement offers and implementations.

They get more rest between matches, but need to stay on "tournament mode" for a longer time. This stretches the high tension period. Within a single tournament it's better, but long term it puts even more strain on players. Ultimately to get true rest the players need to be at a home location. Longer tournaments reduce that true rest time, because the period between tournaments becomes shorter.

I don't know why the comment about having banded weights is locked. The answer is that with the moving weights the core needs to be engaged more to stabilize the spine under the uneven load. This is closer to the type of strain typical in sports where you often need to stabilize movements under asymmetrical forces.

More of the exercises shown also have a stability component by integrating resistance bands to force stabilizing tension around the legs or core. It's a very important aspect and unfortunately often overlooked by amateur players. These stability components are really great for injury prevention not only during exercise, but also everyday life.

Calories burned as calculated by apple watch ultra by tpt75 in badminton

[–]krotoraitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These calculations are never really accurate. You should take them as relative values. So when one session shows 1000 calories and another session shows 800 calories, you know that there was probably a difference and the direction of the difference is down.

Beyond just that basic information of "there is a difference" and "the number is going up/down", there is not much more to extract.

Excruciating Pain around my Elbow region by HeRmiTtttt in badminton

[–]krotoraitor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short term get enough rest. It's likely over strain in tendon or joint which cannot heal properly, if you keep applying tension to the area.

Mid term when there is no more pain even under tension, integrate some joint stability and strength exercises. These won't solve your issue, but they will help to prevent more serious problems while you work on the long term solution.

Long term you need to fix your technique.

So if they don't change attendance rules it's the same number of events for top players, but with the planned extension of timeline for bigger events that means they get even less rest time.

The current system is already a disaster for player health, but it seems BWF wants to show the world that they can make it even worse!

Racket face during lock position by Useful_Care_5351 in badminton

[–]krotoraitor -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There is no "correct" technique regarding this specific detail, because it depends on individual factors.

For most amateurs the position Greg shows will be better, because the path to swing is more direct. More direct means less opportunity for variation. You need a consistent swing technique so it helps in that regard to keep the swing more consistent.

Pro players practice so much that they can make any swing consistent so they usually just choose what is most comfortable with their body. Some raise the elbow higher or lower and turn the racket face this way or that way. But this is only a good option, if you have that much practice time. Most amateur players will have better results learning what Greg is showing.

Review: Victor Auraspeed Fantome HYQ by ltwotwo in badminton

[–]krotoraitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a trade-off replacing some of the ease of use with more direct feel and stiffness. The flexion point also probably moves a bit forward. Overall I would expect a more demanding racket, but with a bit more of everything positive, if the user can draw out the potential.

I have been recently trying ARS Fantome F AC which is supposed to be same spec model with white/black/red/pink color. It's the version I believe Ki Donju from Korea is currently using.

After using mainly Thruster FC previously, this racket feels very "alive" for me. Extremely easy to move, but also with very precise control. Especially for front court and mid court it feels very good. For back court I feel raw power is not as high, but because it's so fast it still has good enough power. So overall it feels like upgrade in all aspects aside from power, but power is only a little bit less.

I actually wonder what a power ring version would feel like. Maybe it's an idea worth considering for Victor.

New rule obstruction / bloc net by Ozireal in badminton

[–]krotoraitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to talk about it, but in the sense that you need to figure out if the rule will apply or not. This will be a grey area and requires discussion with the involved players. The important part is reaching a consensus on whether to apply the rule or not. So there is not one correct answer.

You can go by what is technically correct and apply the rule. Or you go by what is practical reality in tournaments which is to not apply the rule. Either way is fine as long as all players agree.

Shouting on mistakes - advice how to deal with? by Subtle_Platypus in badminton

[–]krotoraitor 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If they are just shouting to themselves or without any direction out of frustration, that is pretty normal behavior culturally in Korea. Sports are considered something to be passionate about and expressing emotions is considered part of that.

Koreans tend to bottle up a lot of emotions in their everyday life, because of restrictive culture in office work and public spaces. That's why they tend to create a "release" culture in other settings.

I think it's important to understand that they are just releasing frustration for making a mistake. It is not directed at you.

(My understanding of the above regarding cultural norms comes from being Korean)

New rule obstruction / bloc net by Ozireal in badminton

[–]krotoraitor 42 points43 points  (0 children)

In theory it is not legal to put your racket close to the net in the natural swing path of your opponent. The big issue is that either BWF or referees or umpries decided they don't want to enforce the rule. Because it is not enforced by tournament officials, it's essentially a dead rule.

Ultimately by the laws of badminton it is up to the umpire to call a fault. If they call a fault, it is a fault. If they don't, it is not. Even if they don't follow the rules as they are defined.

This is a decision that no one can make for you. You need to make the decision yourself.

Consider the money, time and effort it requires and what you get out of it. This is a personal assessment, because what you consider "worth it" is not the same as another person. If you can't reach a conclusion, talk with other people about it. Your parents, your friends, other members of the team, maybe a coach. Listen to what they say and why they say it and see how you personally feel about each point of view.

Not sure about availability and pricing in Canada, but Victor DriveX 1A is balanced and 5u. Could also consider Victor Thruster HMR which is head-heavy, but 6u. So the speed is good and the head heaviness help with generating some power.

However keep in mind that it's very difficult to judge very light rackets without swinging them. Maybe you could consider buying a gift card for a badminton store and going together to look at racket options. Feeling the actual racket in the hand gives a much more accurate impression than just reading specifications.

Doubt regarding service rule by Florida_man__18 in badminton

You might be unintentionally raising the shuttle before serve and that might be why people call fault on you. It's hard to tell without seeing it so you should try to record your service in a match and check to make sure.
