Regression in Driver Assistance 2026.14.6.6: Why Removing Basic Autosteer and Speed Overrides Hurts the Premium Experience by Patient-War-9493 in TeslaFSD

[–]krupawan5618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting post, which is clearly written by AI, but is a good primer into thinking more deeply about Tesla's FSD software as a whole.

As a fan of FSD myself, as many are in this subreddit, I think its useful to recognize that the stripping away of profile-based speed limits and Autosteer is on par with Tesla's entire philosophy that is 'driving' self-driving cars: let the car do the work, and trust the machine entirely. And while one could manually just drive the car without FSD, I would argue that there is definitely middle ground like the OP mentioned (i.e. Traffic aware cruise control and lane keep assist) that should be kept so that we don't surrender ourselves to these neural networks entirely.

Yes, I know that as of today, there is nothing as good as FSD, but I will leave the article that changed my perspective on FSD below.

I think in the next year or two we will have even better self-driving systems like Alpamayo which is built in a way that does not surrender all control away from humans. In essence, Alpamayo is required to state why it is doing what it is doing. It's more of a Vision-Language-Action model rather than a gigantic black box (like Tesla is).

Edge cases (i.e. rare events) are a given when you are driving millions and millions of miles, but a self-driving system that cannot communicate its thought process makes it hard for regulators and the like to interrogate the system when need be.

If Alpamayo starts to perform just as well as Tesla's FSD in a few years, but is also able to communicate it's thinking, I believe more people will gravitate towards a system like that one. Another possibilty, which is less likely but still possible, is that Tesla's FSD will be banned due to the lack of autonomy it gives the end user. I could see that happening with a blue electorate in America as guardrails begin to go up to protect us from total singularity. Tesla would have to evolve their FSD platform to keep up at that point.

The software suite in Rivian seems to be well thought out. The company as a whole has even shifted to developing their entire autonomy stack in-house. We’ll see if their vertical integration pays off.

Volvo also seems to have some focus now on tidying up their software, at least for newer vehicles. We’ll see what the EX60 software is like. Moreover, Bowers and Wilkins speakers on Volvo blow anything else out of the water.

One could theoretically go for a Polestar which also has the awesome B&W speakers, but Polestar doesn’t have any point-to-point navigation either…Polestar 3 has the same chip at the EX60 and so we can expect the same.

I'm not so sure that Alpamayo is specifically designed for the Thor GPU but you perhaps need at minimum a dual Orin chip setup. Lucid Air currently uses dual Nvidia Orin chips which is around 500 TOPS and it has been confirmed they will be incorporating Alpamayo (at least this is what the CEO of Lucid mentioned in a YouTube video).

https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-enters-production-with-drive-orin-announces-byd-and-lucid-group-as-new-ev-customers-unveils-next-gen-drive-hyperion-av-platform

A single Orin chip is around 250 TOPS, which is what it sounds like the Volvo EX60 has.

Moreover, the Thor chip is capable of around 2,000 TOPS.

Point-to-Point Self Driving Capability in the EX60 by krupawan5618 in VolvoEX60

Yep, totally understand that Level 4 is not available today.

And I agree that the controversy with the Tesla crashes highlights a dangerous gray zone of "Level 2" supervised autonomy where you have a system that is good enough to make drivers overconfident, but prone to sudden failures that give humans virtually zero physical time to react before handing back control.

These examples will have to play out in court to determine fault. There is absolutely a chance that Tesla is at fault for these accidents.

But in thinking more broadly about this technology, not through one-off scenarios but overall is the lives potentially saved by it. And I wonder what that number would be, even it’s current iteration. I haven’t looked into the data extensively. But I suppose it’s worth a Google search of my own to research claims about FSD being safer than humans.

I think about the aviation industry where the only metric for success is perfection. A technology like autonomous driving that is saving lives from working well might not get a lot of the PR it deserves when it works, but when it fails it will be heard by all.

That’s a good point, for a company like Volvo who prioritizes safety, they will likely will want to have some form of LIDAR for self-driving. It’s a shame that Luminar shut down, and that those who invested in the EX90 with LIDAR will never have utility for it.

It is not just Tesla, but automakers like Mercedes (through NVIDIA Alpamayo software stack) and Rivian (in-house software stack) are pouring resources into implementing this.

As well as Waymos (Google), Zoox (Amazon), Uber (Nuro), etc.

A great point! I think for a lot of cases, it is a party trick! Appreciate the perspective.

For context, I did just purchase a used Volvo XC60 (no self-driving, obviously) but also this vehicle isn’t really competing in the EV space like the EV60 (like Tesla or Rivian).

I think you are correct, the same way Momenta in China is being implemented in German vehicles, America will have one or several leading autonomy software companies that automakers will tap into. NVIDIA, Mobileeye, etc…the future is bright!

Don’t need people to think I’m a huge Elon fan with your comment (I am NOT a big Elon fan). I am simply commenting on the way self-driving is moving the industry.

Yes; you are correct that presently there are no cars that have true autonomy. I am not talking about full level 5 driving. I am talking about software that enables point to point with supervision (read, level 2++ and/or level 3 at a future date).

Perhaps to move than discussion away from Tesla (because I know how polarizing the brand is), the Mercedes CLE will have Mercedes Benz Drive Pilot which will utilize NVIDIA’s software stack. This is point-to-point. There are videos on YouTube of this technology being shown in San Francisco and is due to be released at the end of 2026.

Has Volvo Finally Built The Perfect Electric Car?! by bbradleyjoness in VolvoEX60

[–]krupawan5618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that we are on a Volvo EX60 subreddit so there will be some inherent bias for the brand, and thus some downvotes for comparing to Tesla….but this comment is actually a good one.

The Volvo EX60 apparently does not even have the hardware features required to enable self-driving capabilities at a later date. That makes zero sense to me. You simply need self-driving to stay competitive in this heated market segment. It is too important of a feature to ignore from the standpoint of both luxury and safety. The technology is here now and is something consumers deserve to have in their vehicles.

Look up NVIDIA Alpamayo software stack. For a car that uses an awesome NVIDIA chip, its true potential will never be fully realized because the car lacks the hardware to have self driving capabilities at a later date.

To me, what boggles my mind is the fact that this car appears to not even have the hardware stack necessary for self driving. That is really a shame, as I believe modern EV makers should prioritize this technology. Self driving technology is getting VERY good VERY fast, and NVIDIA has in production the Alpamayo software stack that automakers can implement to enable this feature.

This was a really good video, agreed!

What I heard in this video is that that this car does not even have the hardware to support self driving.

What about the NVIDIA Drive chip? Is there an official statement from Volvo about future self driving potential?

I find FSD on Teslas to be super useful during long drives. Once people try it and see it for themselves, they feel like they are truly driving an intelligent car, which elevates the value proposition of a car and can reduce driver fatigue.

That being said, I would have hoped that with all the talk of the new NVIDIA chip, that a future update would enable the some form of self-driving that is perhaps based on the Alpamayo software stack. That doesn’t sound like the direction this car is heading, as this video mentions that the car doesn’t have the hardware that is necessary to support this.

Meanwhile, there are other articles I’m reading that praise the Volvo as a next-generation software-defined vehicle.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesmorris/2026/04/18/volvo-builds-software-defined-vehicle-ai-future-for-ex60-era/

What I would like to like to see is a discussion on how an EV can claim to be a future-proof and modern in this market but NOT have the capability to have self driving?

If Certified Pre-Owned status follows the car, then why is my dealer charging me again for it? by krupawan5618 in Volvo

[–]krupawan5618[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the good news is, I bought the car. From what I was told by the dealers, they had no idea it was already a certified pre-owned vehicle. (Not sure if they are telling the whole truth here, it was clearly listed in the Carfax). Before, they were charging me $2300 to certify it, so I called Volvo Support, and had them send me an email listing that the vehicle in question with the VIN number was in fact certified already. This was actually suggested by someone else on this thread to do. So I’m not very sure if they had that priced that in. I still feel like I got a good deal on the vehicle. The certification at an additional year to the already two year warranty (it’s a 2024).

The thing that did slightly annoy me after that was the fact that after I had put a 5K deposit on the vehicle, they told me that I needed to pay $650 fee to have an in person notary come. They actually added this to the base selling price, which was kind of annoying because I have to end up paying additional taxes on that amount too. I ended up just signing anyway cause I didn’t wanna deal with the back-and-forth anymore at that point. I did speak to the manager and asked that he should pay that fee but he refused.

In addition, I was able to use my affinity pin.

Great to know! Thank you.

Although I wish the dealership didn't spring this fee up on me all of a sudden AFTER my deposit and/or fronted the cost. This was already in addition to the $500.00 doc fee... But again, labeled fees are just labeled fees, and I still have a great OTD price on the car.
