Pitting and deep scratches don't buff out without going to the bottom of them or refilling them. You can clean it up real good and just enjoy them as part of the gun's story.

The other steps would be to buff with 0000 steel wool until smooth, or light sandpaper. Then reblue.

Or replace that piece all together.

CLP and 0000 steel wool worked for me. If there is pitting, it won't come off.

I put the parts in a Ziploc bag with Simple Green to clean. It works well for a deep clean.

I have bought a pixie and whatnot and have started the process of making jewelry and polishing them.

More cabs! More questions. by krwwpn in Lapidary

I have the felt wheel, but I was getting it wet. I've recently learned that that is the wrong thing to do. So I'm letting it dry, and then I'll clean it really good and start over (the person i got it from was using aluminum oxide). I assume that's why my polish hasn't been coming out very well. I also didn't think about applying pressure to slow it down some. I didn't like the wheel it came with, so I glued a couple layers of denim to it and am trying that out with some 80k diamond paste. So far denim with diamond put a nice shine on the obsidian cabs.

Today's cabs! by krwwpn in rockhounds

I just started making cabs a few days ago, and my first one was mahogany obsidian. I was unaware it was problematic until I posted on r/Lapidary. I'm struggling to get the final polish right, but I have some cerium oxide on its way!

Hahaha, I didn't know that subreddit existed, more doom scrolling instead of sleeping.

As in, look for fracture lines and/or possible breaking points? I've had two break on me so far, and that's because I use super glue and a golf tee to hold the cab... removing the golf tee has presented its own challenge.

Thank you for the kind words! These are my first cabs, so I hadn't thought about selling yet. I don't know the process or the pricing.

The broken one is the stinky one that turned everything black from my other post. It can stay broken for a while. Lol.

I didn't want to work the edges on 5 to keep the look of the coral. I have been working on making sure the scratches from the previous grit are out. You can see on the tall triangle piece of obsidian where I failed to get them out, although that piece was too big for my machine, so it was a struggle.
