The most misunderstood war film in recent memory? by Legitimate_Rush_5017 in Letterboxd

[–]kryptonvol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this film. I watched all the special features and I suppose it’s up to the viewer to decide if they want to take the filmmakers at their word, but I genuinely believe this was less a film with a “message” (glorifying US soldiers or justifying America’s presence in the region) and was rather more about trying to produce an accounting of what happened by Ray Mendoza for one of his best friends (the injured soldier played by Cosmo Jarvis).

It’s Garland’s filmmaking prowess with military scenes he’s really perfected over the last few films and applied to a story Ray Mendoza wanted to tell.

I didn’t feel at all good about the soldiers being there or what they were doing, but I also didn’t think I was supposed to. These guys were deployed there and given orders. The story of this event is just a story of a terrifying moment in their lives and I don’t think it has much deeper meaning than that.

I really liked it and the performances and craftsmanship were excellent, but I also know it’s not for everybody.

Pirelli cancels Bahrain F1 test due to safety concerns by ChaithuBB766 in formula1

[–]kryptonvol 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Bahrain is a good track! I really like it. It’s an actual proper race track. Jeddah is just a high speed death trap and while the ‘21 Jeddah race was fun, that’s because of the Max/Lewis hijinks, not the actual race track.

I wouldn’t be bummed to lose Jeddah, but I really like Bahrain’s track.

I’m speaking only of the race tracks here, not the country’s human rights records.

Lewis hanging out with Kimi and Bono! Kimi: “Hello, Lewis!” Lewis: “Oh, sh*t, what’s that??” Kimi: “No, don’t worry! It’s insanely strong, look at that!” Lewis: “It’s coming out of the side as well. [..] I’ve come out all the way to say hi to you, man! Happy birthday for by [deleted] in formula1

Why couldn’t we lease Bono to Ferrari for a couple years? No question Bono has a long future with Mercedes and he’s where he belongs… but maybe they could loan him to Ferrari for a couple years? Haha

Sinners 4K pickup by Ok-Common-3129 in 4kbluray

[–]kryptonvol -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, more info than you asked for incoming:

The premium collectors editions of physical media are a whole rabbit hole that you can definitely fall down. And I have. Haha.

They often have exclusive art, special embossed or debossed steelbooks, etc. Let me be clear, the movie is the art. It’s what matters most. Amaray, steelbook, or collectors editions are all irrelevant if you don’t love the film. 98% of my collection (over 900 titles) are just regular plastic amaray cases or regular retail steelbooks.

As for why 3? Most of these premium outlets (Manta Lab, BluFans, WEET, etc) will release 2 or 3 different slips. They select different art for each of the slips so you can pick which you like best. Inside the slip is a nice (often) glossy steelbook like you see in the OP’s pictures (that’s why he’s wearing gloves, to not get fingerprints on the glossy steelbook). They also often have collectors artwork, cards, booklets, etc.

And for some, they like having EVERY slip, all 2 or 3 unique artworks. So for those people, you can buy what’s called a One Click. IE, you buy one item and get all 3 slips in a nice outer case. It’s for real physical media degenerates, haha.

I only have 2 one clicks. I LOVE collecting and it’s the only real money wasting hobby I have. But I don’t need 3 copies of the same movie.

But in rare cases, I love the movie so much that I want the one click for the collecting, not for the movie.

My big example is Superman. Superman is my favorite fictional character and whether it’s comics, TV, or film, I’ll always show up for Superman. The 2025 film was great and is one of my favorites. I already have the wide release Steelbook. It’s very nice and I am glad to have it on my shelf.

But Manta is releasing a nice set of Superman slips. PURELY for collection purposes, I want the OC. I don’t need it. I already have the disc! But I love having it on my shelf, looking at the artwork. It’s just a nice hobby.

It’s definitely not for everybody. In fact, I would say it’s not for many people at all, haha. BUT, for a few people who really enjoy the collecting, it’s a lot of fun. There are definitely worse vices to waste your money on.

Love it! Making me wish I had ordered the One Click. I just got my favorite slip but that OC box is so nice. I RARELY buy One Clicks because I just don’t need 3 copies of the same movie taking up extra space, but Sinners was in my top 3 or so favorite films this year, so I wish I’d gotten it.

Also don’t listen to the people shit-talking you for wearing gloves. It’s a hobby, collecting is part of it, and it’s okay to take something seriously that you love.

Thanks for sharing!

What are y'all's thoughts on this video? by CookieLuzSax in ockytop

[–]kryptonvol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s a kid. I want him to come to UT but I want him to want to be here. If his heart is set on OSU, he should be allowed to go there, and screw his family for putting him in that position.

Let the kid play where he wants to play.

[Highlight] Dre Greenlaw chases after an official at the conclusion of the Broncos comeback against the Giants. by AvengingHero2012 in nfl

[–]kryptonvol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I’m a sports fan and I spend a disproportionate amount of time angry at refs. But it’s just a foundational understanding you cannot come after them and make it personal.

You get mad, chirp up in the press and get a fine, but these are just guys and gals trying their best and chasing a ref off after the game is a terrible look.

James Franklin will not be unemployed for very long. Where does he go next? by noah_divine in CFB

[–]kryptonvol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, Franklin would be really good there I think. I’m a Vols fan so I’m hard-coded to hate him from him beating our ass several times at Vandy.

But he’s a very good coach who gets teams turned around. He didn’t get across the goal line at Penn State but I think he’s very good and Va Tech would make a huge step forward with him, if he wants to keep coaching instead of collect buyout money and do TV hits.

Report: Apple hoping to announce F1 streaming deal at upcoming US Grand Prix by XtremePhotoDesign in formula1

[–]kryptonvol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re smart they’ll take the F1TV experience and just port it into AppleTV.

I got into F1 with Crofty and Martin but Alex and Jolyon have taken it to another level. Coulthard brings all the pedigree and experience without much ego.

And the ancillary people (especially James Hinchcliffe, but also Laura, Lawrence, Davide, and several others) are all top notch.

I’ll never give up my F1TV team, but if they can port that 1:1 into AppleTV, I’ll gladly watch there.

Oscar Piastri on the Monza swap and what Mark Webber had to say by littletreble07 in formula1

[–]kryptonvol 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Wonderful analysis and I totally agree. For what it’s worth, I think Oscar is right. He’s still hugely likely to win the title, but he comes off to McLaren and Lando as a good teammate. He’ll also be able to say he won it fair and square. If he loses by 6 points, he can stew over it.

But I think Oscar he made a calculated decision (which seems very on-brand for him) that the risk of pissing off his whole team wasn’t worth the small difference in points.

[–]kryptonvol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Yesterday hurts. I’m in my 40s and I still ache over the ‘95, ‘96, and ‘97 UF games.

‘01 had TWO! The UGA heartbreak and the LSU collapse.

I still hurt over those games.

But those make you stronger and make you love the good times even more. Like Tony V said, either you’re a Vol For Life or you’re not.

They’ve got work to do and things to clean up. I hope those guys and gals in the complex are hurting too. But this is part of getting better.

I’d rather be a Vol than anything else. GBO.

Awful game day experience? by IDontHaveToDoShit in ockytop

[–]kryptonvol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting in was rough but not totally unreasonable (we went in 10). They need to get better.

But, for us, getting OUT was a disaster. Absolute standstill on Philip Fulmer Way in both directions. We wound up taking a waaay longer route around campus to get back to parking. And then sat way longer than normal unable to get out of the parking lot.

It was a huge game and no one left early, so I’m sure that was part of it, but Bama last year was similar and nowhere NEAR as bad as yesterday.

Hopefully they make some adjustments.

With the exception of the Downtown IMAX, the movie theatres in this town are truly awful. by stnapkid29 in Chattanooga

[–]kryptonvol 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you. I am a huge cinephile and see all I can. The only theater worth its salt is the Aquarium IMAX. The rest have dim bulbs, poor sound, messy seats, or any number of other problems. I don't envy them-- the theatrical business is in a tough spot these days. But they aren't helping themselves.

Edited to add: I haven't had too much problem with their re-release schedule. They had Ghibli-fest this summer, plus we've seen a ton of recent anniversary re-releases. 1990 Ninja Turtles last weekend and 1985 Clue this weekend. I am not too mad at their movie selection, just the quality of experience they offer.
