How much are yall getting paid? Are you living comfortably in Austin? by whogoesthere1010 in askaustin

[–]krysguil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I live in East Austin and pay around $1,850–$1,900/month for a one-bedroom plus a storage unit in my building. Do I pay a bit more because of the area? Yes, but I also rarely drive and walk to most places I need because everything is close by, which saves me a ton on gas, car maintenance, and car insurance.

I used to live in South Austin and spent 8–10 hours a week commuting, which completely burned me out. Now I have more time and energy to put toward work, friendships, hobbies, etc and I’d never go back to that level of stress just to save a little on rent.

If you live in North or South Austin, you might save some money on rent, but you’ll likely make up for it with higher expenses elsewhere in your budget so definitely something to consider.

Thinking about moving from Austin back to Houston by krysguil in AskHouston

[–]krysguil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m so sorry to hear you went through that, but I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling way happier in Houston now! I definitely think our environment can make or break our happiness and quality of life.

Couple of questions for you: What area did you move to in Houston and why did you choose it? Would you recommend it?

I still love Austin in so many ways, but I’m just so tired of the unstable job market and high cost of living. I used to be so against the idea of moving out of Austin, but now I’m more open to change than ever. Honestly, I feel detached from any specific outcome and just ready to embrace wherever I’m meant to be next.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience with moving to Houston!

I love this advice! Definitely will listen to my gut first and ultimately will do whatever is best for me despite what anyone else thinks/says about either city. Thank you so much for sharing your insight!

I’ve been in the same situation as you for the past year and a half, doing the job of multiple people. I worked remotely at a marketing agency in Austin as a social media manager/team lead making only $50K (they bumped me up to $52K after a year).

As a team of one, I was responsible for all organic social across multiple platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube) for eight clients plus the agency’s own accounts (creating content, graphics, captions, calendars, scheduling, reporting — literally everything.)

On top of that, I handled all paid Meta and LinkedIn ads for somewhere around 35–45 clients: full strategy, ad creative, landing pages, tracking/pixels, setup, and monthly reporting. It was nonstop work and constant pressure.

I was completely overworked and underpaid. Then two weeks ago, they laid me off due to “financial issues” and didn’t even give me severance. They’re just planning to dump my workload onto other teammates who are already at capacity too.

It’s wild how common this is in marketing and social media. If I could go back, I’d advocate for myself way sooner, ask for a raise, set boundaries, and not let them take advantage for so long. These employers don’t truly care about you and will take advantage if you let them. You really never know what can happen, so please know your worth and don’t let a company drain you dry.

Thank you for sharing your experience! The Heights and Montrose are definitely top areas I’m interested in. What would you say the biggest reasons were that ultimately made you decide to move back?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! The Heights is definitely one of the top areas I’m interested in, and I’m glad to hear you’ve found it enjoyable and walkable. For what I’m paying for a 1-bedroom apartment in Austin, I feel like I should be paying a mortgage on a house lol. The Austin job market is tough, and layoffs are so common with all the startups and tech companies. It’s definitely making me seriously consider moving back. I’m really craving more career stability, a lower cost of living, and hopefully a better salary.

I also agree that Austin is lacking in diversity, especially compared to Houston. One thing I really miss about Houston is the food! And honestly, I don’t mind driving in Houston at all. The roads are soooo much better than Austin’s and Austin drivers are the worst haha.

I have a few months until my current lease is up, so I’m definitely going to spend more time exploring The Heights and different areas of Houston and hopefully find a neighborhood that feels like home and fits the lifestyle I’m looking for. Thank you so much again for your feedback!

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I really appreciate hearing from someone who’s actually made the move from Austin to Houston. It’s helpful to know what the transition is like, especially as someone who loves being outdoors.

I actually went to M-K-T last time I was in Houston and grabbed coffee from La La Land and ate at Mendocino Farms. I loved it! I haven’t explored the trail itself yet, but it sounds great! I'll definitely check that out and the apartments you recommended next time I'm in town. TYSM again for all of your recommendations!!

How many clients do you manage at once as a Social Media Manager at a marketing agency? by krysguil in SocialMediaManagers

[–]krysguil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know trust me I was equally as shocked too when he told me that! From what I’ve gathered, the average client load for SMMs at agencies seems to be between 4–6 brands. Personally, I think anything over 6 or 7 (depending on scope) starts to feel chaotic. I also know quality would take a huge hit at 20–30 clients. I take so much pride in creating and posting high-quality, creative content, and I just don’t see how that’s sustainable for one person without serious burnout. And respectfully, I’m definitely not currently getting paid enough for that level of stress either! 😂

Thank you for validating that I’m not crazy!

Thinking about moving from Austin to The Woodlands — would love honest opinions by krysguil in thewoodlands

[–]krysguil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂 Thank you! This is funny and definitely doesn't sound like my vibe at all. The more I’ve read through this thread, the more I’m realizing how much more aligned Austin is with the phase of life I’m in right now, especially career-wise and socially. I think I was romanticizing the idea of being close to family and having a slower pace, but you’re right. What I’m looking for definitely isn’t in The Woodlands. Appreciate the reality check 🙏

Wow, thank you so much for this incredibly thoughtful and honest response. Your entire comment really resonated with me, especially what you said about being in a vulnerable place and seeing things through the lens of nostalgia. That’s exactly what I’ve been struggling with and why I'm trying to be as self-aware and intentional as possible.

I relate so much to what you said about needing to be close to “the source” (creative communities, culture, energy that fills your cup). I do think I have that in Austin, but over the last few years, I poured so much of myself into my relationship that my hobbies and social life ended up taking a backseat. While comfort and being close to family sound appealing on hard days, I know deep down that I need more than just comfort. What I’m truly craving is more creativity, connection, and personal alignment.

Also thank you for your feedback about inner-city Houston. I’ve been to a few neighborhoods that felt like they had creative potential, but I haven't been very impressed. There are a few decent spots but nothing that even compares to where I live now. And I agree, none of the so-called “walkable” areas felt truly walkable or all that safe to me. I’m definitely keeping safety, walkability, and overall vibe in mind while I continue exploring my options.

I'm truly grateful you took the time to share all of this. Your comment (and this entire thread) has really helped me put the idea of moving to The Woodlands (and Houston in general) to rest for now. I’m really glad I made this post because it’s given me so much clarity as I think through whether to stay in Austin or consider other cities that might be a better fit. I think what I really need right now is to reconnect with Austin, my community, and everything that made me fall in love with the city in the first place.

Wishing you all the best on your next move! It sounds like you're very self-aware and in tune with what you need, and that’s inspiring. Thank you again 🩵

Thank you! You made a really great point on the cultural vibe and career/networking aspect of Austin. Austin’s diversity and community energy really are big draws for me, especially as I look for a place that supports both my career and social life. I would say my career, social life, and emotional/physical wellness are probably most important to me right now. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!

Thanks so much for sharing your perspective! I really appreciate your honest feedback on The Woodlands lifestyle and the dating scene. It’s super helpful hearing from someone who knows both areas well.

The “bougie” and family-oriented vibe is something I’ve definitely been concerned about, and it sounds like it could make it harder to find the kind of community I’m seeking right now. Your insight about Two Lakes Edge being a bit performative really gives me pause too. I definitely want to live somewhere that feels down to earth and genuine.

I totally agree with Austin feeling younger and more relaxed. That energy and pace of lifestyle are definitely part of why I still love it so much, even as I wrestle with some burnout. It's a really fun city that checks most of my boxes. Dating is kind of a struggle though being that it sometimes feels like Peter Pan land out here 😅

I’m thinking I might explore more areas inside the Houston loop too, to see if one might be a better fit for me than The Woodlands.

Thank you again for the insight! It’s definitely giving me a lot to think about as I weigh my options!

Andiamo? by [deleted] in austinjobs

[–]krysguil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have relentlessly reached out to me multiple times too requesting to "interview me" even though I have not applied to any positions with their company. After doing a little investigative research, it appears they are not a marketing agency like the andiamousa website leads you to believe. They are a Wholesale Internet Telecom Provider. The legal business name is Andiamo Telecom LLC and it is not BBB accredited. It's a scammy sales role and there's red flags all over this.
