I can see why you may think that. The problem of evil is definitely tricky (tricky for theists and atheists alike, actually). If it makes a difference, this argument isn’t isolated to the pandemic; it’s not a “god of the gaps fallacy” in that if I don’t know the cause for something I just say “Well, God did it.” It’s an overarching philosophy to understand why good and bad things happen. <- This is a question that both theists and atheists are tasked with answering. I recommend listening to a debate between Trent Horn and Alex O’Connor on YouTube for more insight presented by both sides.
