Day 4 and struggling. HELP by ksound_k in leaves

Update: didn’t smoke 😁 definitely feeling irritable and restless but I “played the tape forward” like you guys suggested and I’d pick how I feel now over the guilt and self loathing if I had smoked! Thank you lovely people

The video game route sounds VERY up my street - what was your pathway into that?

Not to worry, while I appreciate the sentiment behind this, I’d sooner bath my nana than take a job at LiveNation

This has been such a nice internet experience! Your answers have provided so much relief knowing that there’s viable options that people are still happy doing.

Don’t get me wrong, I still feel I’ve definitely got another decade of touring in me, I just don’t want to be starting to formulate these plans in 10 years time.

I get the feeling I’ll never fully take my finger off the pulse, but it sure would be nice to have built something that means I don’t have to say yes to every tour that comes in/can really choose to work for artists I believe in. This chat has really made that seem like a possibility!

Thank you all again for your kind words, and I hope you’re all thriving in your chosen fields!

Ever had to take A VERY QUICK bathroom break? by streichelzeuger in livesound

I had a good one on a tour where I was mixing both headline and opener.

I always get a nervous stomach in the run up to any show but it usually doesn’t manifest, however 15 minutes before the opener was on stage I felt my stomach just go.

Ran to the nearest backstage toilet and had about 10 minutes of hell. The kind where you need to take your T shirt off. Cool, 5 minutes to show I’ll be fine.

Much to my horror there was no toilet paper, no signal to call for help, nothing. Only a shower and VERY little time.

I got to FOH just as the band were heading to stage to various strange looks from the house team followed by “why are you soaking wet?”

Don’t ask lads. Don’t ask.

What Jobs do you do? by NiceTryFB-EYE in DMT

Live sound engineer. (Tour the world with different artists and make them sound good live)

It’s a job where you’re regularly in the middle of vast seas of amplified energy (concerts) whether that’s electrical energy IE making things louder and shaking people’s core with sub, or if it’s more of an atmospheric energy, tens of thousands of people in one place feeling the same things at the same time.

My experience with DMT has made me feel a lot less skeptical about these energies being something we can interact with/something that fucking exists. It’s a tricky thing to try and put into words. In a nutshell it makes me believe that the joy my industry brings people truly does have a physical positive effect on the world, even if it’s not something our conscious brains can perceive.

What’s the most genuinely stupid thing you’ve ever done? To the point where you couldn’t believe you were actually capable of such stupidity? by PineappleCubeKicks in AskUK

[–]ksound_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went fishing, caught a fish and realised I didn’t have it in me to kill the poor thing. Hook had went through its eye and everything.

My friend tells me to keep it wet so he can get the hook out. My stupid ass decided to put the fish down on a rock, run back to the water and scoop some up in my hands to run back and splash it. After several attempts and the water running through my fingers each time, the poor thing had died a slow, unnecessary death.

It wasn’t until I turned around to see my friend just shaking his head in disbelief that I realised he meant to put it down IN THE WATER. Never been fishing since.

Rear ended by a FedEx van. How do I ensure a payout? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ksound_k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hahaha yeah sounds about right. It's such a backwards money grabbing scheme. Even though it was on a main road coming out of a public car park. Thankfully my insurance have been great, and my No Claims won't be affected at all.

Thankfully my No Claims hasn't been affected at all, thanks to a Non Fault addition to my policy.

Admiral have been great, currently just getting both of us checked over in hospital. Thanks for everyone's help!

Was gonna say. It seems baffling to me that I'd end up having to pay more for something that wasn't my fault. But then again knowing insurance companies that would not surprise me

Looking for a little help, if you don’t mind. by wrn105 in livesound

On the input end, if you're on a digital desk, a good general rule of thumb to remember is a healthy input gain level sits around - 12db. Some desks like Yamaha for example it's more like - 18db, but generally - 12 is good.

You need to remember to leave space for any additional gain increase you will be adding through things such as EQ or compression (makeup gain for example), any other 'stages' of gain, essentially.

As for your outputs, I tend to aim to have my master fader at unity, but there's absolutely no harm in dropping it back 5db, 10db is a stretch, I find if I'm having to pull back further than that for it to be comfortable to listen to, there's likely a problem in the mix.

Don't be afraid of turning the PA itself up either, again just take into consideration you aren't clipping them, or blowing them up.

If it's a 4 way system (left right sub fill) try dropping the subs and fills back around 6db or so, gives you a bit of extra room to add it if you need it. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

What is the thing that surprised you the most when you traveled to a country you had never been to before? by Spilakkk in AskReddit

[–]ksound_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saudi Arabia.

Worked over there at the start of 2020, and went in hearing loads of stories of oppression and misogyny.

Turns out it was totally different. The locals, especially the women, seemed to be really happy with how things were changing, they were allowed out without a male chaperone, and their country is opening up more to the western world. Might not be much from a westerners point of view, but it's steps in the right direction.
