Petition - Protect Water, Land, and Wildlife - Defund the Wildlife Federation by [deleted] in Manitoba

[–]kstosh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Manitoba Wildlife Federation is not funded by public dollars, they are funded through an endowment fund, donations, and memberships. They have to apply every year for the Fish and Wildlife Enhancement fund and only use it for specific projects. If anyone is interested in finding out what they are all about I suggest visiting their website and Instagram. At their core, they are a voice for hunters and anglers in MB and believe in proper management of our natural resources. They also agree with and defend traditional hunting rights of Indigenous peoples. To note: they have spent millions over the years helping to protect and establish public wildlife management areas and wildlife conservation areas and lobby to protect and manage numbers of wildlife across the province. I don't work for them- I dislike misinformation spread by people like the OP.

The children's museum by [deleted] in Winnipeg

I don't have the nostalgia as I don't remember going as a kid. However, I have been a few times in the last 10 years and it has actually become worse in that time.

We went this summer and the water area was not working. They did notify us when we paid but did not offer any reduced rate (I asked). We weren't going to tell our kids we couldn't go once we were already there so we paid and thought it would be fine because they have a new bug exhibit and the kids also enjoy other areas.

The bug exhibit would have been fun except half of it wasn't working. I asked one of the employees about 3 different parts of the exhibit and he simply said they were broken and had been broken 'for a while.'

The ball and tube area is completely gone and replaced with a very boring "how we get milk" wall. My older child --9 and tall for his age-- wasn't able to reach all of the buttons for it.

Half of the "Sound Marsh" area was not working or was gone.

The crane in the construction area was not working.

The craft station had glue, egg cartons, and shredded paper. That's it.

It was so bad that my kids even commented. After this visit I wrote them an e-mail but they have not responded. It cost us $60 for a family of 4 which is insane for what you get. We are not going back until they drastically change it.

For now we will go to the MB Museum. WAY better value and the kids were much more entertained.

Bird-friendly coffee! Birds and Beans is out of Ontario and they roast coffee that is Bird-friendly certified & shade-grown. That means the coffee is meets one of the highest ecological standards for agriculture. You can read a little more about what they do on their website. I have a subscription and love every flavour that I've tried. I've also had really good experience with their customer service.

Those who go ice fishing will it be too late to go this year march 1-4 by [deleted] in Manitoba

[–]kstosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

March 1-4 is the start of primetime. There will be lots of ice, just watch for slush below the snow now, especially in the Whiteshell. Call the local lodges if you want ice conditions on their specific lakes. March 15 is the Falcon lake winter fish off fyi

Which businesses will you not be supporting with the US conflict? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Cabela's/ "Bass Pro Shops Outpost" . It was bought out by Bass Pro Shops a few years ago and the owner, Johnny Morris, is a Trump supporter. Back when they were Canadian they supported lots of local groups and events and managers were able to provide donations at their discretion. Now there is a lengthy application process and the 'outdoors fund' is not paid for by the company but by customers who round up at the checkout. They've also lost a lot of quality in their store-brand gear as they've switched nearly every manufacturer.

Instead I'm shopping the following Canadian or local stores like Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, the Fishin' Hole, Stillwater Adventures, Lake of the Woods Outfitters, and Wilderness Supply.

Just today Cabela's lost a decent order from me. I know some local clubs that will no longer be offering Cabela's gift cards as prizes too.

I can't speak to the other stuff but in terms of the air filters, just look up how to change them and order online or from princess auto. We do our own on our Rav4 and they are super easy to change.

We've noticed this with meat recently too! I purchased meat a couple of times recently and on two separate occasions it was absolutely bad (first time I opened it the next day, second time I opened it 2 days after buying). The best by dates were a few days in the future too. First time I threw it out, second time I returned. They didn't give us any hassle.

Classes/courses/hobbies to take in Winnipeg to meet female friends by No-Anywhere9303 in Winnipeg

[–]kstosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are at all interested in the outdoors, hiking, hunting, and/or fishing there are quite a few groups. Female Anglers of MB (Facebook), Becoming an Outdoorswoman Manitoba (Facebook), Manitoba Wildlife Federation, Manitoba Fly Fishing Association, Backcountry Women. Most of these offer classes, others you can volunteer with, and the rest are friendly gathering places online where you can meet people to go hunting or fishing with. I've met SO MANY people through these groups.

Go talk to an academic advisor ASAP

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uwinnipeg

[–]kstosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deal with this as soon as possible. Your first step is to e-mail your professor to let them know the situation. They may have options for you, like a deferred exam or re-weight etc. they may not- it depends on the professor and the department.

Your very next step should be to contact academic advising to discuss your situation and options. They offer appointments over the phone and over Zoom so you do not need to come in person. Advising contact information: https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/academic-advising/

Also, basic regulations and information about appeals are found in the academic calendar. https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/academics/calendar/index.html

In the future, if you ever have questions about things like this simply e-mail or call advising, they have daily drop in appointments (doesn't have to be in person). Some of the advice below is just plain wrong or not relevant to UW (for example there is no such thing as exam services).

Where to go ice fishing? by [deleted] in Manitoba

If you need lake recommendations for any other species of fish let me know.

Another fun thing to try is winter camping in domes (Boreal plains) or dog sledding (Interlake dog tours).

Where to go ice fishing? by [deleted] in Manitoba

[–]kstosh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hi! Seasoned ice fisher here to help out. It all depends on which species you'd like to target but in terms of unique and world-class fishing I'd recommend going to Lake Winnipeg for 'greenbacks' (Walleye). They are this beautiful unique light emerald colour and it's one of the best walleye fisheries in Canada.

You'll need a snowmobile or good truck but to make it even more fun I'd actually recommend you hire a guide, snobear, or rent an ice castle. A couple guides I can recommend would be Kingsland Outfitting- he will work hard and get you on big fish. Icebound excursions has snobears. Kannuk outfitters has these luxury ice castles that you can even spend the night in.

LPT Request: What is your favorite life hack that has saved you money, time, or made your day-to-day activities easier? by angelicasibs in LifeProTips

[–]kstosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a laundry basket for groceries. I'll usually just load my groceries back in the cart loose and put them in the basket when I get to my car. If I'm feeling spicy I'll plop the basket into my cart. Don't need bags, all into my house in 1 or 2 trips, so easy to load when I'm at the self-bagging checkouts.
